Hanfree combines the best of contemporary product and furniture design to create a new type of iPad experience.
Imagine the iPad floating above you... This is the main idea that drove the design of Hanfree. Hanfree is the most comfortable way to watch movies or read eBooks in bed.
Hanfree can be positioned in front of you on the ground, the screen is mounted to a ball and socket joint that allows it to swivel 360 degrees. This is the ideal height for gaming and using apps while sitting on a chair or couch.
The three main parts: clear case, stainless steel neck, white plastic base.
The case allows you to simply snap the iPad into place and fits the iPad securely. It has an integrated ball and socket joint which allows 360 degrees rotation, which makes it easy to switch from landscape or portrait modes.
The base is light weight and very stable, it's slim profile was designed to be unobtrusive when using it with pillows in bed. We designed all of the corners to be rounded to make it kid friendly, while also eliminating snagging on sheets.
We just finished 3D modeling the base for the plastic engineer. It has softer edges which will feel better in bed and will be injection molded, this will use 65% less plastic than the solid flat sheet material shown in the video. The base will also snap together so it can be packed smaller to reduce its carbon footprint when shipping. We hope you like it.
The neck is constructed from durable stainless steel. We made more than twenty prototypes to find the optimal curve and ideal height to place the iPad in the most ergonomic viewing position. The neck can pivot to the side, allowing you to swing it out of the way when you are getting in and out of bed.
Introducing the Kickstarter limited edition Alder Hanfree.
The limited edition Hanfree will be made in San Francisco out of sustainably forested alder, and will be numbered and signed by the designers.
The photo below is one of the main inspiration images. This photo made me realize that in the near future, people in hospitals will use the iPad while in recovery. This fact alone gave me enough ethical justification to pursue the Hanfree concept. Imagine if you were stuck in traction from neck or back surgery or to weak to move if recovering from chemotherapy. I would want to use the iPad to browse photos of family, learn a foreign language, play No Time to Explain, and watch movies to pass the time. We have started a relationship with a San Francisco Bay Area childrens hospital, and are donating 10 Hanfree as soon as the design is manufactured.
