About

Overview

The Fairest of All is the much anticipated sequel to The Fairytale Keeper and is book two in The Fairytale Keeper series. The novel combines Grimm’s Fairy Tale characters, key players from the world of 13th century Holy Roman Empire, and dynamic characters with real historical settings and events to create a tale that leaves the reader wondering where fact ends and fiction begins.

Project Goals

1.  Provide student and adult readers with a setting often neglected in historical fiction, the 13th century Holy Roman Empire.

The 13th century Holy Roman Empire was a real-life game of thrones.  By the middle of the century, the Holy Roman Empire was in turmoil.  Kings and anti-kings, popes and anti-popes claimed to reign, but with a lot of rulers and little order, the realm fell to chaos.

2.  Expose my audience to the REAL Grimm's fairy tales.

Most people's knowledge of Grimm's Fairy Tales begins and ends with Disney's vision.  That leaves the dark beauty of German folklore lost in translation.  A Medieval setting allows for seamless weaving of  the real Grimm's tales into an engaging story of love, loyalty, and corruption.

3.  Create a set of complex characters, including a strong, yet conflicted heroine.

The protagonist in my tale, Adelaide, comes from a line of storytellers. Her desire to continue that legacy, not only by telling the tales her mother crafted, but by turning the events from her own life into their own set of tales, is interrupted.  Vengeance under the guise of justice consumes her, resulting in a complex set of consequences that force her to fight every instinct she has in order to save the people she loves.  But she doesn't forget her experiences.  The life she lives, the adventures she has, result in the collection we know today as Grimm's Fairy Tales.

Current Project Status

The first book in The Fairytale Keeper series was published last Summer.

Since its publication, The Fairytale Keeper has become a quarter-finalist in Amazon's 2013 Breakthrough Novel Contest, won Indie Book of the Day, and was second runner-up in Writing.com's Hook Us Contest.  As a result of these awards, I have gained positive reviews from Publisher's Weekly which says The Fairytale Keeper is “a…resonant tale set late in the 13th century… with unexpected plot twists. An engaging story of revenge and redemption… An opener to a future series.” A professional reviewer from Amazon's contest says it is a “really great story. The author’s style reminds me of many great historical fiction pieces that I've read. Strong emotion injected into almost every page.”

As of now, I am in the revision stage with the second novel in The Fairytale Keeper seriesThe Fairest of All is written, and I am just about finished with my first round of revisions.  This is when publishing gets expensive.  The Fairest of All is twice as long as The Fairytale Keeper, which means that professional editing, proofreading, and printing will cost twice as much. All I need now are the funds for publication so I can have it on shelves by January 2014.

More About Andrea Cefalo

One of my favorite parts of being an author is inspiring young people to take risks and follow their dreams.  I am a former teacher and love to visit area schools in South Carolina where I discuss publishing with students.  I also give interactive presentations on the Middle Ages. To all who check out my project, and especially to those who donate, thank you for helping to make my dream a reality.  Based on the success that I've had with my first novel, I feel it's likely that my writing will support itself once I have published a few more books. Your support allows me to help students see that if they do what they love, then success and happiness will follow.

Risks and challenges

I guess I could be struck by lightning or tied to train tracks, but I don't find any of those to be likely scenarios, so, unless a major, catastrophic event strikes, count on seeing The Fairest of All in book stores by 2014.
