We have a design ready to be manufactured and produced for the IPhone 5. With the headphone jack at the bottom of the phone, this case design is so much easier to maneuver into your pockets. Our challenge is that we need to get to 1000 backers, for production of the IPhone 5 cases along with the IPhone 4/4s cases. You will be able to save the same 10" or 20" of cord length with the IPhone 5 design. Here it is, check it out.
The idea for the Cordli iPhone case was born of a need to create a discreet storage space for the commonly seen audio cords that come with many of the commercially available hi def audio cans. Aki (creator), an audiophile with not a lot of extra pocket room for his iPhone and excess cord length with his Dr. Dre headphones, developed a 2D mechanical layout of a proposed design. From there, a 3D CAD design was developed which was then used to produce a rigid 3D printed version of the pre-manufactured design. This prototype was used to illustrate the general look and feel of the product but was not sufficient to demonstrate the flexibility in material needed to fully evaluate a production quality silicone. This first initial 3D printed case led to a change in the design of the cord storage recesses (adding in additional length for chord storage) and also taking the bend radius for chords and depth of channels into consideration. The next step was to create a rapid mold used to cast parts in a urethane material. Several pre-production units were produced off of the mold and then evaluated. The parts were evaluated in the categories of form, fit and function. It was determined that 1. the design of the cable routing had been optimized for varying lengths of cord storage 2. strain on cables had been minimized by using a specific bend radius in the cable runs 3. cables were retained well and cable diameters were flush with the exterior cosmetic surfaces of the case thereby eliminating any snag points and potential usability issues. The limited sample run successfully produced parts that were defect free and ultimately validated the capability of the manufacturer / supplier chosen to mass produce the end product.
How does it work?
Upon successful completion of the Kickstarter campaign, the goals would be to communicate the quantities required for an initial fulfillment. Based on the quantities required, our tooling strategies would have to be readjusted and refined from initial quotes that were projected. We do not anticipate a drastic change in the production quotes but in the event that a significant amount of products are ordered from the Kickstarter campaign, we the Cordli team (Aki + manufacturer) would need to revisit the type of mold and number of cavities needed to achieve production quantities. Our manufacturing partner is currently capable of running 15k - 18k units per month based on the initial tooling strategy that was set in the Cordli production quote.
Once production quantities are established we will specify the cavitation strategy which our tooling partner will use to develop the final production mold(s)
T1(first article inspection) trial samples will be produced off of the production mold for approval. If parts meet our general inspection criteria for cleanliness, color, quality and general aesthetics and no modifications to the mold are required then a PO will be issued for production quantities and the manufacturer will build inventory from there. Our manufacturing partner will be able to produce versions of the Cordli case either iPhone 4 or 5 and will be determined by demand.
Production units will be bulk shipped directly to the creator of Cordli, in Chicago, where the is plan to package and ship each unit to the backers / end customers. We are fully capable of packaging and shipping each unit to Kickstarter backers by staffing locally and by using temporary labor. In the event that there is an influx of demand from the Kickstarter campaign, the Cordli team has pre-arranged for a fulfillment company to receive and distribute individual units to customers. Again, this will only happen given increased demand for the product and over achievement of the KS campaign goal.
September - Mid October (15th) (Kickstarter Campaign Duration)
October 15th - October 30th Finalize production quantities, Tooling production and T1 sample run for quality inspection).
November 1st - November 25th (Production of Cordli units given successful completion of T1 products without defects)
November 26th- on. Packaging and Shipping of Cordli cases to Kickstarter backers.
Why I need your help
I'm a one man shop and have taken this product as far as I can on my own. I'm fully confident in the functionality of the Cordli but in order to bring it up to volume manufacturing, I need your backing and support. A successful campaign will allow me to fund the production of the multi cavity steel mold tool and keep unit costs low by ordering large quantities.

Manufacturing any product on a large scale in a timely manner can present various risks and challenges. We have created a strategic relationship with reliable facilitating agents in the US with over 20+ years of experience sourcing and manufacturing products for companies like Restorative Therapies Inc. and other OEM commercial product developers. They have an established history of reliability and quality when it comes to the engineering development, prototyping and manufacturing of consumer products.
I have set an aggressive date of November 2013 to produce and ship these cases. This will be my first major run fulfilling a large order in a very short amount of time and I plan to keep you up to date with the overall process.
