Imagine if Willy Wonka’s Land of Pure Imagination were filled with healthy food instead of candy. Imagine no more! Welcome to Yummiloo, home to the Yum Yums, elfin creatures whose younger generation – led by best friends Rooty and Red – share amazing adventures and never pass up a chance to explore and learn.
Yummiloo, brought to you by children's media innovators yummico, is a food adventure TV show designed to expose preschoolers to healthy eating through irresistible characters, stories and games. A wonder-filled land composed entirely of food, Yummiloo excites and delights kids, while setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating. Yummiloo is a parent’s ally – making food fun, giving children the tools and encouragement they need to make healthy choices - all while keeping them smiling and singing along. Yummiloo gives “playing with your food” a whole new meaning.
Why Yummiloo is Important
Yummiloo is an animated TV show created by children’s media veteran Traci Paige Johnson, co-creator of the blockbuster franchise Blue’s Clues as well as the force behind such shows as Super Why, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Creative Galaxy. After working for 10 years to create the Blue's Clues brand, Traci took time off to raise her three children and quickly realized one of her greatest parenting challenges was to teach them how to eat and live healthfully. Childhood obesity was on the rise, and so was the flow of ads and marketing tactics targeted at kids by companies selling unhealthy food products. Recognizing the lack of healthy lifestyle messaging in kids media, Traci knew what her next project would be.
That's when she met Caroline Baron, Oscar nominated feature film producer (Capote, Monsoon Wedding), visionary changemaker (FilmAid) and mother of two. The two joined forces to form yummico, a new kind of company, dedicated to creating multiplatform entertainment for kids while educating them on how to make healthy choices. They first turned to the app space. Premiering on the iOS platform in 2013, yummico’s Yummiloo Rainbow Power app used entertaining stories and characters as a vehicle to teach preschoolers healthy eating. An Apple ‘Featured App’ for nine straight weeks, it went on to win numerous awards and garnered over 120,000 downloads, and this endorsement from Commonsense Media:
“Kids will enjoy the bright colors and catchy tunes, and parents will appreciate the positive message encouraging kids to eat wholesome foods in a variety of colors.”
Which brings us to our Yummiloo Kickstarter campaign! Based on the success of Yummiloo Rainbow Power, Traci and Caroline realized the time is now for a TV show, so we’re making a pilot to get the ball rolling. Just as Blue’s Clue’s revolutionized children’s educational media by engaging kids in virtual conversation, Yummiloo will teach kids that healthy food can be delicious and fun, flipping the script on the pervasive advertising strategies that have made the junk food industry the unofficial poster child for the obesity crisis.
It’s through engaging stories and irresistible characters that kids will learn, among other things:
- How to identify food
- Where food comes from
- Why whole foods are better tasting, and better for you, than processed foods
Yummiloo isn’t a show featuring talking broccoli telling kids how good they are for your body. Instead, the characters know and love the food that surrounds them, creating the backdrop for Yummiloo’s adventures and stories.
Media is great at creating want, and the data suggests that the more healthy-leaning characters that are available to children, the more children will want to mimic them. Offering wholesome examples is a necessary first step for children, but as media creators we wish also to create the next set of engaging characters who will model healthier lifestyles.
We've already introduced Yummiloo to the world, and it's been met with great success. As an entertainment property, the app showed how engaging Yummiloo could be, garnering great reviews, receiving multiple awards, and being featured by Apple for nine consecutive weeks.

Additionally, in September 2014 we partnered with the New York-based non-profit Bubble to test Yummiloo's effect as a tool for change. Bubble's expressed aim is to deliver unique health and wellness programs that augment schools' core academic curriculum. Using a poster-sized image of Yummiloo and images of the Yum Yums, we taught a curriculum of our core messages to groups of preschoolers. The response was unanimous – the kids loved the Yum Yums, singing the Yum Yum song every chance they got and eating everything that was put in front of them.
Now we’ve come to Kickstarter to create a show for all to see.
Yummiloo is filled with an endless number of huggable Yum Yums-
Though the majority of the stories will focus on the following two friends...
Rooty comes with his feet firmly planted on the ground. Ever curious, but always the pragmatist, Rooty has an eye for adventure and a measured approach to problem solving. Rooty is a kind friend who brings out the best in everyone.
Full of get up and go, Red is up for anything. Often the one who gets his friends into trouble, Red has little concern for rules and doesn’t pay enough attention to what others have taught him. This is a recipe for disaster, especially when Red forgets to eat, or eats the wrong things.
Yummiloo will always engage kids first as adventure storytelling – with exciting, delicious food as the ever-present backdrop. Planned as a series with multiple episodes, yummico writers have been busy developing a slew of wonderful stories.
From the grass outside a community garden, every episode begins with the Yum Yums playing peek-a-boo and inviting the viewer to enter and discover the magical world within: a world filled with carrot cars, a smoothie river, and strawberry mountains.
But Yummiloo always balances the extraordinary with the ordinary and, after an eye-popping open, we introduce the viewer to Rooty – very much a spirited preschooler. Beginning at home with her parents, getting ready for her day, after a bit of domestic business (brushing her teeth, doing her chores), Rooty soon discovers a problem or mystery that sends her and her gang on an exciting adventure.
For example, Rooty may find an ancient map in the attic, taking her and her friend Red on a treasure hunt. They have to scramble over the watermelon mountain and cross the smoothie river to find the treasure, which happens to be....the mysterious golden raspberries. Yum! Or there's always the annual carnival, but this year the rides aren't moving - because the rainbow machine needs power. The Yum Yums have to find different colored fruits and vegetables in order to get it started! Double Yum!
Important messaging will be embedded into each episode, exploring such topics as Eating a Rainbow, Being A Food Adventurer (Picky Eating), Making Your Body Your Best Friend, Listening to Your Tummy, Food Identification, Super Foods, Real Foods vs. Fake Foods, Mindful Eating, Making Healthy Choices, Meal Preparation, Mealtime Manners, and Food From Seed to Table.
Every episode ends around the ‘Tree Table’ – the community table at the center of town where the Yum Yums gather to enjoy the day’s feast, and share the day’s stories.
Combining photo-real elements with shaded graphics, the look of Yummiloo will make kids want to reach out and take a bite.
Here's a few seconds of what the show will look like, with the huge caveat that all of the animation in the following clip (and in the app and teaser) was crafted by one man on one computer (that being our amazing partner Bob Mowen), without the help of our animation team and the additional resources they come with. With the funds the Kickstarter will provide, we'll be able to deliver a richly animated broadcast-quality story to the world.

Why Kickstarter and How You Can Help
As with so many independent creators, we have come to Kickstarter and the crowdfunding community to raise the funds needed to create the Yummiloo pilot. What we find so great about Kickstarter is that it allows people like you to participate in the making of creative projects, essentially cutting out the middle man between creator and audience. In most cases, companies providing funding for kids TV want a voice in how the shows are made. We've decided seeking funding from fans through Kickstarter because it is not only the fastest way to bring you Yummiloo the series, but also the best way to speak directly to our audience and to preserve the artistic vision.
Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing - a project must reach its goal to receive any money. Our Kickstarter goal of $72,000 will provide us with the funds to produce one, five-minute Yummiloo cartoon. Can we exceed our goal? Absolutely.The more money we raise the more cartoons we are able to make.
Making a television-quality production requires a significant budget. Our budget consists of the following-
- Voice casting
- Recording (in a top-of-the-line audio production facility)
- Creating an animatic (shooting the storyboard with the final dialogue)
Then during production, we focus on animation:
- Creating layouts
- Initial Sound Design and Music Composition
And finally there is the post-production stage, where the final steps of production happen:
- Sound effects (Recording and editing)
- Music Scoring
- Final Mix
Overseen by creator Traci Paige Johnson, production will begin immediately, with anticipated release of the first episode by late fall of 2015.
