About this project

34 YEARS SINCE MY LAST ALBUM!

It's been 35 years since l last made my last album.  Where have all those years gone?  Wow! It's still a vivid memory, squeezing a 40 piece band into the Bill Armstrong Studios in South  Melbourne, Victoria.

The Footscray Yarraville Brass Band accompanied me for my rendition of Wait Til The Sun Shines Nellie.  They were straight back from the International Brass Band Competition in Canada and won first prize!

The day came to record and I was feeling quite confident as I walked into Albert Studios in Sydney first thing in the morning, walking out that afternoon with a completed album! Who says that the digital age is easier or faster?

MY NEW ALBUM

A selection from my Broadway Medley {rough mix}

A selection from my Greek Medley {rough mix}

A selection from my Last Farewell sing with ukulele {rough mix}

For seven years now I've been plodding along, putting tracks together. Everything today seems so dragged out. I reached a stage where I felt that if I didn't do something, it was not going to happen. So, several weeks ago l stopped everything and have focused on finishing the album.

I've always known the importance of having good people around you.  My long-time friend and fellow musician, John Drakopoulos has owned and run recording studios for most of his life and has given me great support. Recording in his Merimbula studios is always a gratifying experience. I also look forward to performing live at his soon to be opened, Sapphire Coast Community Radio Station.

As luck has it, old friends, Geoff and David Willis moved to Merimbula two and a half years ago.  They have been encouraging and inspirational critics.  The twin's faces will shortly be splashed over newspapers and magazines around the world when their musical, The Great Houdini debuts.

I've always tried to present the banjo through all genres of music. This could not have been possible without the expertise of musical arranger and sequencer, Claus Zimmer.  Percussionist in the Basil Philharmonic Orchestra in Switzerland, he has always been ahead of his time as music entered the digital age.

Most of the work is completed, but your contribution will help make my dream a reality!

HOOKED ON BANJO - THE MUSIC

I'm especially excited about my Movie Medley that New York singer Karen Saunders hummed into a recorder as we walked around the decks of the Golden Princess in Hawaii .  Maestro Joe Paparone converted this simple melody to manuscript, which I then sent to Claus to work his digital magic.

A selection from my Movie Medley (rough mix)

The Broadway Medley, I am proud to say, was arranged especially for me, by the amazing American concert pianist, Mac Frampton. What an incredible piece of writing... and it took me three months to learn. (You need to have eaten your cornflakes before even thinking about playing this one!!)

A selection from my Zorba Greek Medley (rough mix)

I've used mandola, to enhance the romantic songs and to be true to the Greek feel of Zorba's Dance.  Yes, everybody's done this one, but you'll all be dancing in the aisles when you hear the thrilling last 20 bars!

The Palladium Rag

I've re-discovered the classic banjo style prominent in the 1800's and turn of the century, that I first heard of in my younger days.  It's quite complex and takes an enormous amount of practice to become proficient.  Here l tackle Joe Morley's Palladium Rag.  The sheet music was available free on thereallyniceman's web page (thanks once again to modern technology).

A Selection from Last Night At The Proms Medley (rough mix)

Last Night At The Promshas been an annual event at the Royal Albert Hall for many years and traditionally closes with the same few songs. So, what would it sound like on the banjo? Well, here's a little appetizer...

A selection from my vocal, The Last Farewell (rough mix)

On my last Album l sang a song, so l thought it would be fun to do it again, all these years later.  I spent some time in Tahiti and loved the sound of the ukulele, which so compliments the nautical feel of this Roger Whittaker classic.

Eight weeks at home and l'm just about finished my album.  Just little bit of polishing needed and a couple of extra songs and then the final mix.

Unfortunately, I've run out of funds.  Recording in a studio isn't cheap! I'm so close to finishing this album, and when it comes down to it, it's more about the achievement of a dream and the music than it is about the profit.

This will probably be my last banjo recording so l hope it gets over the line.

The Final Product

Back in the 80's and 90's who'd have ever thought that the cassette tape would disappear? And look...they're gone forever!  Now it's looking like CD's are next in line, Hence my product is going to be available on the latest of technologies, the USB stick, as a key ring Ukulele and Banjo.
