Who's that Guy..? ;)
As a songwriter and producer, I’ve been very blessed in my life to work with some truly incredible artists, including Leonard Cohen, Elton John, Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Jewel, and many others. I’m proud to say that I've written eight “Number One” songs, more than twenty “Top Twenty-Five” singles, and have sold over 170 million albums worldwide. I had so much fun as the musical director and keyboardist for the Jackson 5 Victory Tour, as well as Madonna’s Virgin Tour and Who’s That Girl World Tour. Looking back on my career, however, there's no doubt that Madonna stands out among the rest. Who would have known that when we wrote "Live to Tell" at my home studio in 1985 it would be the first of so many life-changing moments we shared together.
When not creating music, I love to fly fish, play chess, watch old movies, create projects with my three beautiful, artistic children, and hang out with my wonderful girlfriend and my beloved dog, Jane. I also have a deep love for teaching and have recently begun writing a memoir that I’m hoping to share with you all one day soon.
What's this new record about...?
Bring the Circus Home is a celebration of my decades-long collaboration with Madonna that will feature entirely original, reimagined versions of many of the most famous songs we wrote together, including: “Live to Tell,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Dear Jessie,” “Oh Father” (my personal favorite), “Hanky Panky,” and “Frozen." The album will also include a new song, the title track, “Bring the Circus Home,” plus a few more surprises thrown in for good measure. ;)
A labor of love for the incredible fans who’ve always meant so much to me, I feel it's time to revisit these songs, both as they were originally conceived and as how I hear them now. Contributors will have an “all access pass” to the creative process, via frequent check-ins, live studio streams, Q&A sessions, and more. I’m also thrilled that many of the other incredible musicians who contributed to my work with Madonna, including engineer Michael Verdick, bassist Guy Pratt, guitarist Bruce Gaitsch, and more, will also be lending their talents to Bring the Circus Home.
Once the album is finished, I can’t wait to take the show on the road, and plan to embark on a fan-friendly tour that blends stories and songs (dates and locations TBA).
YOU! The fans...
It goes without saying that Madonna has some of the most incredibly devoted, loyal, and generous fans of any artist in history. Last year, I joined Instagram and was blown away by the love and support that these fans showed me as well, and was truly moved by the stories people shared about what the music had meant to them over the years. I can honestly say I had no idea that the music Madonna and I wrote together had made such an impact on so many lives, and I was eager to find a way to say thank you.
At the same time, I was also incredibly excited when so many fans reached out to ask if I would consider making an album with new versions of these same songs. With this in mind, last September I played a show that featured new instrumental arrangements of songs like "Live to Tell," "Spanish Eyes," and "Skin" at the legendary Joe’s Pub in NYC. It was an amazing night for me, and I was once again overwhelmed both by the response to the show and the cries for more. The album and upcoming tour of Bring the Circus Home are the result of this outpouring of support, and are the best ways I can think of to show my gratitude to the fans.
More than anything to me, Bring the Circus Home is a record made for and with the fans, and I'm thrilled that Kickstarter allows me to build a community where we can communicate and engage throughout the process. Eager to dive in, I’ve already begun work on the record and will be involving the fans throughout the campaign with updates on my progress, to share my thanks, and to answer questions sent in by contributors, as well as to ask for your help with things like choosing the album artwork.
What’s more, I want to make this record my way - at the highest level of production and without record company interference, and Kickstarter can make that happen.
Thank you all for your support. I'm really excited about exploring these songs again and finding new inspiration. I can't wait to share this record with you all. Please pledge and help me spread the word!

Did you say REWARDS..?
Along with the usual rewards like advanced digital downloads, thank you credit in the liner notes and a PDF deluxe album booklet. I will also be offering special opportunities for songwriting sessions with me in studio, speaking to me via skype(ask me anything!) and a memorabilia bundle with items seen below personally autographed. More rewards will be added as the campaign goes on. ;)
Risks and challenges
Contributors can be assured the funds raised will go towards the actual production of the album, including musician and engineer fees and travel expenses, mixing and mastering, equipment and studio time, manufacturing a limited run of vinyl copies, tech support, and promotional materials and events, such as the private concert at East/West studios in L.A.
I also hope to be able to bring on a behind-the-scenes videographer/photographer to document the album’s creation, if funds allow. I’m working with an amazing, dedicated team to make sure the entire process goes as smoothly as possible, but also know that unexpected hurdles can sometimes arise in the record-making process.
If and when any obstacles do appear in our path, I promise to be transparent about these issues and to swiftly find a resolution.
Ultimately, though, I am a professional who has been working in this industry since 1968, and I know exactly how to make an album in a timely way. There is no reason to think this album won't be finished and in your hands this year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
