About

SpatialOne – 3D Delta printer kit

I wanted a robust Delta printer that could print big parts in a wide range of materials, so i developed SpatialOne. I believe this printer offers a solid foundation for high quality printing and will enable printing of many different types of materials. This is not a basic or toy 3D printer, it's a solid design using high quality components. It's not designed to be over-engineered, just engineered well and give repeatable high quality prints and a reliable service for people who need 3D printed products.

The nature of this 3D printer means it can, and will be, expanded for different tools, uses and capabilities. I'm investigating various tool head designs that will be released as Open-Source files and models for you to use on the SpatialOne. These include ceramic and clay printing, Laser etching, flexible filament printing, chocolate printing and other modules.

The hot end platform is printed, therefore users of the delta printer could design and try their the own systems out.

This is an Open-Source printer and is released on youmagine: https://www.youmagine.com/designs/spatial-one-3d-delta-printer

History Behind SpatialOne

SpatialOne started in January 2013 as a combination of wood, linear bearings, j head, printed parts and controlled by a Sanguinololu. This was a fast learning curve and my starting point to 3D printing. Video below of it in action printing a sellotape holder:

June 2013 I started the build of my second printer, using the first printer to print the parts, the vertical slides changed to igus slides, igus rod ends to create custom arms and standard machine build extrusions for the frame and electronics changed to ramps. Picture below of the build:

September 2013 - 3rd Printer once again improvements on the last design pre-loaded vertical slides, same arms, all metal frame construction, silicone rubber heated bed and ramps to control the printer. See it in action below:

Specification

Print Technology: Fused filament fabrication (FFF) Print

Media: PLA, ABS, Nylon, any filament material with extrusion temperature up to 300 degrees C except flexible filament (new extruder and hot end platform to print such materials coming soon)

Build Volume: 270mm diameter x 290mm height (diameter and height varies depending on single or dual hot ends or different platform designs)

Layer Resolution: 0.1mm to user preference (depends on bed levelness and nozzle diameter)

Filament Diameter: 1.75mm

Extrusion Speed:Travel speeds of 500mm/s and print speeds up to 300mm/s.

Materials: Anodised aluminium, 304 stainless steel, PLA printed parts

Construction: Robust metal construction, CNC laser cut sheetmetal parts and CNC machined parts with some printed parts. E3d Online v6 hot end, all metal extruder with stepper and gearbox.

Moving Parts: Preloaded ball raced vertical slides to eliminate any adjustment required and play. Igus rod ends and Misumi industrial bearings.

Electronics: Smoothie board 5xc, capable of dual extruders, with GLCD graphic controller, future upgrades touch control panel.

Firmware: Smoothieware

AC input: 100-240VAC 50-60Hz

Power Requirements: 24VDC @ 500w and (12VDC @ 15w, Meanwell maybe subject to change depending on cooling design) power supplies.

Connectivity: USB and Ethernet

Auto levelling: Aluminum heated bed with FSR levelling. Auto levelling of the bed using calibration functions built into the smoothie board calibration and auto z height set before each print, experienced users can tailor the system to their preference.

Just unfasten three bolts, disconnect supply cable and filament feed, then change to a new end effector.

Team

The team consists of myself and my family to help in the packaging and delivery of the SpatialOne to all the kickstarter supporters.

I have extensive engineering experience over 27 years in a varied sectors from designing and delivering large and small projects to customers all over the world. The next step, is to use this knowledge, experience and my ideas to fruition and a set up a forward thinking business. I want to set up and develop a 3d printer manufacturing business, employing technically minded staff to develop SpatialOne and support all my customers.

Why back us and what the funding is for

You will be backing a high quality, robust and well-engineered delta printer with the ability to create repeatable and quality prints, designed by a very experienced design engineer. The machine is future proof with its interchangeable end effectors, as mentioned above, and expansions will be published Open-Source as they are finalised. A chocolate system is currently being tested.

I need you to make SpatialOne a success. This is a new start-up and need the capital to jump-start the project. I have spent a lot of time and money developing and prototyping SpatialOne and now need the additional investment to finalise the design of the dual extruders, finish the print cooling, finish the manuals and buy in bulk and create a viable production machine. I want to carry on developing and expanding the printers potential with new printing mediums, end effectors and new ideas. People supporting this project can also develop their own systems as the end effector is a printed part allowing this development.

Risks and challenges

The SpatialOne 1.2 prototype has been constructed and tested.
5 test versions of the SpatialOne 1.3 prototype have been extensively tested. Feedback from these testers has been used for this, the production version of the printer. All the engineering & design is done, just the finalising of the documentation.

Risks: There will always be risk involved when relying on parts suppliers. One of our suppliers could deliver out of spec parts that would lead to the printer malfunctioning.
Shipping the 3D printer has been tested but there is always a risk that parts will break during shipping.
