The Health of Bronx Kids is in Crisis!
The Bronx has been ranked dead last among New York counties in indices of health and wellness… for 7 YEARS IN A ROW. And, check the statistics: it is Bronx Kids that are suffering.
Roots and Rivers Kids, Sweet Water Dance & Yoga’s Children’s Program, launched in June 2016 to arm Bronx kids with healthy habits that encourage stewardship over their health, their community and their world.
Lessons and experiences in COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT, MINDFUL MOVEMENT, FINE ARTS & APPLIED SKILLS encourage health, mindfulness, confidence and love of self, nature and community.
Our program is designed to improve the health and wellness of Bronx Kids. We believe that children that feel entitled to health and empowered to act in their community will only flourish into healthy, whole human beings ready to improve upon our world. Part of Bronx Kids being healthy is them feeling pride in their community.
Hip Hop, a musical form - and way of life - was born in the Bronx. Hip Hop has been a powerful force for social justice around the world. Bronx Kids need to know this came out of their community…from their neighborhoods. They need to feel that Bronx Pride in their souls and know that Bronx Kids just like them have changed the world with nothing but their talent and authenticity.
We have launched this All in 1 Kickstarter Project to raise funds to introduce Hip-Hop education as part of our holistic summer program. We want to deliver this content without adding to the program cost, which, low as it is, is still a hard stretch for many families in our community.
The funds raised will specifically go towards:
- Purchasing DJ equipment (turntables, speakers)
- Funding the instructor to lead the classes
- Developing a curriculum focused on Hip-Hop turntablism
- Producing an end of summer recital featuring the children’s original work.
Your contribution will provide local youth the opportunity to connect with the Bronx’s history of innovation, and emerge ready to claim their health, ready to contribute to their community, inspired by the story of their borough.

Risks and challenges
There are not many risks associated with the completing this project. We had a successful inaugural summer season in 2016 and have a comprehensive program lined up for 2017. The simply need the funds to realize the additional "History of Hip-Hop" component.
We have identified second hand turntables and an additional speaker.
We have a phenomenal Hip-Hop dance instructor already on board.
The primary challenge that exists is securing the turntablism instructor, however we have a fantastic network here in the Bronx and have a few instructors already in mind. We're confident that we'll be able to finalize this last piece by the start of the program in June '17.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
