Fyne Fiddles Volume 1
Fyne Fiddles has grown out of a music writing, arranging & teaching partnership between me & my great pal Donald Knox, who I met while working with Borders community music group, Riddell Fiddles. Donald is brilliant. He is the yin of impeccable planning and presentation to the yang of my utterly scatterbrained impulsive harebrained creative ideas. It works a treat.
So since 2014 we have been leading a series of weekend workshops at Ardkinglas House at the head of Loch Fyne. Now, inspired by this beautiful setting and informed by the experiences with our students, we have decided to take it to the next level and create a suite of fiddle lessons in Book, Audio CD and Video /Online format.
The lessons used in this project are tried & tested - we know that students love playing Donald's arrangements of the tunes and that fiddle players across Scotland are inspired by my lessons, ideas and - I trust - wise words! So we reckoned it was about time to try and spread the word, to make this teaching accessible to folk who don't have time or money to come all the way to beautiful Argyll (although of course they should if they possibly can).
Fyne Fiddles Volume 1 is the result. But this is a MASSIVE project - verging on the ridiculous dare I say. [My Dad would agree, with a giant groan and probable rolling of eyes, that I have always been nothing if not ambitious. Foolhardy indeed. Rash perhaps?] Anyway, true to form I have done it again. Another great idea that simply HAS to happen "what exactly do you mean by have I planned the budget, Dad?".
Joking aside, we do of course have a budget & solid plan and a very big ambition to deliver this project. It's been growing for a few years in my mind and I believe we have something really special that needs to be shared in the wider fiddle playing community. We want to make something that Scottish Fiddle learners can use no matter whether they live - be it on a remote Scottish Island or the other side of the world - be they a millionaire, a penniless musician or a violin teaching colleague looking for ideas and understanding of folk music.
And so it has begun. We have selected our favourite lessons, been into the studio and recorded them as audio & video. Now we're furiously writing editing & scoring. We've put some of our own money in and we're doing a tour and some workshops at the end of November and early December which will help cover some of the costs, but we still need to raise the funds to press the CDs, print the books, edit the video lessons & build the new website that will deliver this worldwide. https://www.lunaria.co.uk
So go on, have a look at our list of rewards. We hope there is something there for everyone!
Thank you for reading this and for any donation you can give to help us make this project the success we believe it can be.
Risks and challenges
We have a delivery deadline for the book & CD of 13th November, just in time for the official launch at the Edinburgh Fiddle Festival on Sunday 19th November. Because there is so much to do just to get this bit of the project complete and to promote the wee concert tour we are realistic that the full development of the website & online lessons is a way off yet. So for now we are focussing on the hard copy and building a temporary website to promote the tour & sell the book, cd & downloads.
This online element of this project is complicated and setting up a full website that will allow us to do all the things we need it to is no mean feat. I am lucky to have found an ace developer, Lunaria in Edinburgh, and Lindsay is guiding me through this process with years of experience behind him and his team.
Also, I have been working with ABC Creative Music for 7 years now, delivering online music resources to classroom teachers, so what I don't know about online lesson delivery my wonderful colleagues Tom & Phil Bancroft do and they are poised to support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
