Update 7.17.11

This latest blog post, Did I Provide a Heirloom Solution to a Vanishing Variety of Tomato? demonstrates what I'm doing and what your support will help me accomplish. ______________________________________________________________

It's been stated that up to 93% of the vegetable varieties that were grown in 1900 are now extinct. That's a stunning statistic, and one that disturbs me. I'm an advocate for saving heirloom vegetables. This book, Future Tomatoes, is the first major step I'm taking to document the varieties that are left. Focusing on the unique qualities of the tomato bud, I want to show off the beauty and grace of what announces to the world that tomatoes are coming. Also, the title is play on words with the concept of saving these present varieties to insure they are the tomatoes of the future,

My approach as an advocate is to encourage the general public to treat heirloom varieties of vegetables as family heirlooms. It's a long and storied tradition, and one that is personal to me. There is a plant in our family that spans two continents, and three generations. My parents, grandparents and friends of the family have all taught me the value of being a steward for the land that feeds us, and to respect and honor the awesome power of nature. Now it's my turn to give back in a way that will help stop the further extinction of vegetable varieties.

I tell my story on my blog, Vanishing Feast – An Heirloom Solution. There I demonstrate what has been passed along to me, along with my research, so I can inspire others to continue the tradition of looking at gardening and heirloom vegetable varieties as family heirlooms. The plants we chose to grow delight our senses and feed our soul. And, they tell a good story about who we are as human beings. By encouraging people to choose heirloom varieties, and to pass them along to future generations, this preserves a unique part of the family history, while saving threatened plants from extinction. It's a great legacy for our time.

There's a disconnect in society that exists thanks to the big box retail model. People are removed from their local food sources and the history of local varieties of plants that sustained local cultures for many generations. I want to use my skills as an artist, a story teller, and a marketer to reconnect people with the remaining varieties of heirloom vegetables, and inspire them by the example of what I am doing. This book will demonstrate that.

I have a garden with 22 varieties of tomatoes, 21 of which are heirloom tomatoes. I'm going to photograph the buds. There will be page spreads in the book with macro photography shots, (which are close-up shots) of the buds on my tomato plants, with a short story about the variety on the opposite page.

Here's a gallery with some potential shots and the page spreads of the what the inside of the book will look like.

The money will be for the pinting and production of the book to have copies available for schools, independent book stores, libraries, gardening organizations, and nonprofits.
