About

WE ARE NOT NAMELESS FACES ~ Letters and Images From a Gay World

We are not nameless faces
We have lives, issues, fears and passions
We make mistakes
We challenge ourselves to be better people
We are heroes, demons and everything in between
We are you

Nameless Faces began as a project in placing faces to the pains and joys LGBT culture encounters. Over the two years of photographing each of the themes and putting together each final piece, it came to represent a lot more for me. I found within it both the joys and pains of our subculture and the similarities is shared to other subcultures. In fact, it was within the project that I stopped thinking of the LGBT community as outcasts from the rest of the world and started to see that we were just one culture amongst many that make up this amazing world of ours.

I've sat on the original collection for several years, watching for the right time to bring it into the public arena. With LGBT issues constantly in the news these days, I've decided that the time is NOW.

The main collection is represented by 17 archetypes within gay culture. Each archetype is represented by images, stories and concepts of what each represents.

It is my desire to launch a national exhibition of the main pieces, along with a national dialogue about our culture. At the same time the exhibition is touring, a coffee table book is also planned that is composed of 17 short stories written in an 'epistolary form', which is to say, in a series of letters that tell the tale of each theme. The letters will be written by authors from around the globe.

It is my plan in the spring of 2013 to begin a second series of photos devoted specifically to Lesbian women. This first series was devoted to men, because it was what I knew best. Eventually I hope to see a volume devoted to each of the L's, G's, B's and T's that make up our amazing culture.

The archetypes explored within the exhibit include:

1.     THE TWINKS: Young and good-looking does not always equal brainless

2.     THE HEALERS: The roles of gay doctors in straight society

3.     THE COUNSELORS: A bartender’s battle with being counselor to his patrons while using alcohol as his own form of counseling

4.     THE ARTISTS: The role of gay artists

5.     THE OPPOSITES: A look at partners with opposing issues such as older/younger, HIV-/HIV+, and submissive/dominant

6.     THE SCHOLARS: One man’s quest for knowledge and understanding

7.     THE STRONG: A muscle builder’s journey of inner peace

8.     THE PREACHERS: The roles of religion and guilt in gay life

9.     THE PRACTITIONERS: Gay spirituality

10.  THE DEAD: A gay man’s journey through the phases of the acceptance of death (denial, bargaining and acceptance)

11.  THE ADDICTS: The roles of addiction in gay life

12.  THE COMMITED ONES: Life in a committed monogamous relationship between gay men

13.  THE FOUNDERS: Gender orientation and decisions of sexual identity in the Garden of Eden

14.  THE ACTORS: Which faces do we wear in life and in protection of what we are

15.  THE LONELY:  A Psychology of Abandonment: Facing loneliness

16.  THE FAMILY: The Three Bears and life in a household of a partnership of three

17.  THE ENLIGHTENED: Seeking a higher level of spiritual partnership in relationships

CONCEPTUAL EXHIBIT IDEAS

Ideally the exhibit would have several facets. One aspect would be composed of the actual photos of each archetype along with excerpts from the book and quotes from each model. Besides the actual photographs, video would create a multimedia environment running a  continuous loop of other photos taken for each archetype and behind the scenes photos taken throughout the progress of the project. Lastly, both the photographer and some of the models would be on hand to make commentary and discuss aspects of the exhibit and keep a dialogue open.
