About this project
Introducing the "The Hoversled Pilot and Designer's Manual" which is a booklet designed to inspire taking the imagination and wonder of the Hoversled, through to it's actual construction! The book includes not just a study of the sport and sciences involved with Hoversledding, but it includes an illustrated step-by-step guide to constructing your own Hoversled with the addition of the affordable kit. To build a Hoversled from the kit, the basic tools needed are a sewing machine, drill press and band saw. (Pre-made parts will also be available :) The value of this as an educational tool is extraordinary as it teaches math, physics, electronics and useful crafting disciplines that can inspire self confidence and creativity. It is also an excellent family project.
What is the Hoversled? The Hoversled is the world' first ultralight, battery-powered hovercraft and it is designed for sledding. It was invented in St. Cloud, Mn and is deemed possibly the greatest personal "hover" gadget ever. It is light-weight, practical, sporty, safe, fun and can be used on any safe and obstacle-free sliding hill. It will also hover on any smooth and hard surface with 160 pounds of lift capacity for someone up to 6 feet tall. The smaller the Hoversled pilot, the better it performs.
Part of the awesomeness of the Hoversled is not only its smooth, gravity-propelled ride, but a person can assemble one at home with the same quality and durability of the original "Hoversled Classic" which is the amazing machine modeled after the original prototype.
It took Steven over 25 years of dreaming and design to bring this amazing kit to life. He always dreamed of having a personal hovercraft and was inspired by the space craft in "Star Wars". Not only can anyone make their own Hoversled today, they can also benefit from the knowledge and self esteem they will develop along the way. "You actually MADE this?!?" The book will hopefully inspire the confidence of taking a few basic materials and putting them all together with ease to build your own hoversled. Designers can even create a custom version as extra parts and materials are available and the basic design is intended to be quite versatile.
It is ideal as an educational kit in shop class, home economics, or even a family project for parents and their kids. Some adult supervision is recommended for kids under 18 years of age. It is the hope that "The Hoversled Pilot and Designer's Manual" can be utilized as a fun educational tool in schools, colleges, and homes around the world. The sport of Hoversledding itself is a source of great fun and self-motivating exercise. Riding a Hoversled has an entirely unique feel as you begin to move about with only the slightest resistance, and the low pressure hull absorbs bumps with ease.
Funding for this campaign will help in sustaining the development and affordability of Hoversled.
Risks and challenges
Hoversled was first introduced at the Benton County Fair in 2015. Kids and adults were able to "test-fly" the Hoversled right on the concrete floor of our booth and get a taste of the glide it is possible to experience on the sledding hill. The Hoversled was a hit with people of all ages but we are just spreading our wings as a small business.
We welcome any challenge that might come from our success! We are offering the Hoversled now in its least expensive form - a kit. The companion manual is written in a manner to inspire confidence, and given the materials, we believe you can do build one too! What a fun and fulfilling project for yourself, family, school, 4H aerospace, a gift etc! Our hope is to inspire a new generation of engineers, winter sports enthusiasts, inventors, and makers.
