About

REVIVAL 3: IT’S ABOUT TIME is a multi-generational community dance experience, that brings together nine seasoned choreographers, the multi-generational company Dances For A Variable Population (DVP) and a diverse spectrum of older adults from the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens.

We created REVIVAL to celebrate legendary older dancers and choreographers, extraordinary artists with a direct link to major choreographers like Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Charles Moore, Katherine Dunham and Alvin Ailey. These artists in some ways allow us to become time-travelers. Through their memories and dancing bodies, we can journey to the dance traditions of other times. Inspired by this idea, this year’s project is called IT’S ABOUT TIME! It highlights nine choreographers who transmit and interpret the essence of key dance traditions. This year’s artists, all over 60, are: Marnie Thomas Wood, Ellen Graff, Elizabeth Keen, Audrey Hubbard Madison, Tina Bush, Sandra Rivera, Myna Majors, Alice Teirstein, Ara Fitzgerald, and DVP Artistic Director Naomi Goldberg Haas.

Along with these remarkable guest artists, REVIVAL: IT’S ABOUT TIME will feature over 75 community dancers who train in our free workshops. This remarkably diverse cast, some reaching the age of 90, will add their lived experience to the performances. The exuberant performances will celebrate the joy and courage of these older performers, as they expand their sense of what is possible.

We will present IT’S ABOUT TIME in June at Grant’s tomb in Manhattan, Queensbridge Park in Long Island City and in the Fall of 2019 at Washington Square Park in the West Village and for the first time in the Bronx. We perform in neighborhoods across the city to bring dance to people where they live, and to enable community performers to be recognized and celebrated in their home communities.

We need your help in completing this project, which will share unique insight into the history of dance while bringing joy to so many people! We are raising funds to offset expenses for the featured artists and senior performers including artist fees, bus transportation, costumes, and hospitality along with publicity and other production expenses. It’s expensive to transport over 75 older adults across boroughs and showcase the performances with dignity and style!

Join us in making this project happen! Join us to celebrate legendary older dancers! Join us to bring multi-generational dance to New York City neighborhoods! Together, we can unite communities and generations in joyful celebration.

Risks and challenges

We are pleased to have the full collaboration of all nine guest artists, as well as strong partnership support from the Summer on the Hudson/Riverside Park, Grant's Memorial Tomb, Queensbridge Park and in Sept at Dept of Parks in the Bronx and Washington Square Park Conservancy.

What is needed are funds to cover the transportation costs, which are high this year as we are expanding our reach to three boroughs, and to help us with some of the production costs - including artists fees!

Kickstarter contributions will match public funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. WITHOUT THE MATCH FROM KICKSTARTER, WE CAN'T ACCESS THE GOVERNMENT FUNDING, PUTTING THE WHOLE PROJECT AT RISK.
