FLUID is the world's first learning water meter. Your relationship with the water you use on a daily basis will never be the same once you install FLUID. You'll have complete visibility into how, when and where you use water.
We've designed FLUID so it is easy to install and no plumber is required. You simply snap FLUID around the main water pipe coming into your home, plug it in and connect it to your WiFi network.
Once installed and connected you will begin to see your water usage in real-time from any connected device.
FLUID also allows you to create what we are calling Signatures to identify usage by each appliance or fixture. Simply run the appliance or fixture you want to create a signature for and tell FLUID to learn the water consumption flow pattern associated with that particular appliance or fixture's run cycle. Once a signature has been recorded FLUID will identify every time that particular appliance or fixture is running and track its consumption. The end result is usage data that allows you to see how much water you're using for things like showers, laundry, flushes, dishwashing, lawn irrigation, etc.
FLUID pays for itself the first time it catches a leak! When FLUID identifies constant or erratic water use you'll get a notification that there may be a possible leak or water that has been left running.
It could be as simple as a garden hose that was left on, a running toilet, or in a worst case scenario a pipe bursts when you are away from your home on a trip or an errand. FLUID gives you the peace of mind that you won't return home to huge water bills or thousands of dollars in water damages.
Amazing things can happen once you become more connected to the water you use. You'll become more aware of how many loads of laundry you are doing weekly, the length of your showers and other habits and behaviors. Making changes doesn't just fall on your shoulders - after all FLUID is a "learning water meter." So, once FLUID begins collecting data on how you use water it will begin surfacing recommendations on steps you can take to conserve.
Beyond making recommendations FLUID also empowers you to set monthly water consumption goals and tracks your progress toward reaching your goal. All of these reductions in consumption mean lower water bills and more money in your pocket!
We plan to support cloud-to-cloud integrations with existing Smart Home platforms including SmartThings and Nest upon delivery of the Kickstarter devices.
We are also exploring integration with other platforms such as Insteon, WeMo and Wink.
We have designed FLUID to be as open as possible. We believe in data portability and want to make using FLUID seamless with your digital life.
We will provide a REST API for developers to access FLUID's data and offer cloud-to-cloud integrations for customers who are already using Internet-of-Things platforms such as SmartThings.
FLUID utilizes a robust and proven ultrasonic metering technology that has been measuring the velocity of liquids and calculating the flow of these liquids within large industrial applications for many years.
Here is how it works: There are two transducers within FLUID's enclosure which are non-intrusive and are clamped on the outside of the pipe. These transducers send ultrasonic pulses in and against the flow direction.
FLUID uses these ultrasonic pulses to measure velocity, flow, and transit time to calculate usage.

First we needed to transform a standard ultrasonic meter into a connected device. Here's our original prototype and our portable flow lab.
Next we needed to make sure we could connect our device to WiFi via a simple app.
Lastly, we needed to begin visualizing the data being sent to our cloud computing environment by the prototype. Here is a short video of what the original data visualizations looked like.
After months of prototyping, designing, sourcing parts and components and working with awesome partners like the folks at Particle - we finalized our PCB design.
We also finalized the design of the jig which ensures that our transducers are properly fitted to the pipe every time FLUID is snapped on.
Based on the dimensions of our PCB, our transducers and jig, we were able to finalize the design of our enclosure.
Lastly, software development is underway. FLUID will be compatible with both iOS and Android right out of the box.
So, that brings us to this Kickstarter campaign. We need your support for the final non-recurring engineering, tooling and manufacturing costs.

Our team is made up of experts in hardware, software, mobile, manufacturing and veteran entrepreneurs who are focused on changing the world one gallon at a time.
Risks and challenges
We fully understand that every hardware project has risks and challenges. We have mitigated risk by following a structured process to test the components of FLUID. We have put countless hours into sourcing and prototyping and will continue to focus on the enclosure (trying to combine multiple parts into one) and the software (making FLUID easier to use, smarter, and a better learner).
Early on we prepared to meet these risks and challenges by bringing together a veteran team of hardware and software engineers who have years of experience in prototyping, domestic and foreign manufacturing, firmware, app development and supply chain management. We have sourced all of FLUID's components and fully understand our non-recurring engineering costs, tooling costs, and manufacturing costs using partners our team has previously worked with. We've been through a number of prototype revisions and are confident we can deliver FLUID.
Even with all of our efforts, hardware manufacturing doesn’t always go as planned and there may be complications with some aspects of fulfillment.
