Minnesota was recently named the fastest growing tech community in the country.
We have an incredible community, we are growing, we need tech talent, and we don’t do a very good job of telling our story. We have so much here, but these stories, opportunities, and communities are not always visible.
DocuMNtary is a project to build awareness of technology in Minnesota by telling our story through a documentary series.
The project objective is to help Minnesota become a top 5 tech community by retaining and attracting top technology talent.
DocuMNtary will be distributed primarily as a web experience along with other channel partners such as public television. The web experience allows us to ensure that this story is available to all people and organizations in Minnesota and beyond.
The series consists of the 30-minute high-level story, and individual 5-10 minute stories from specific people, companies, industries, or other components of our ecosystem. The documentary format allows us to tell the world not only about our great community, innovation, and company stories, but also gives us opportunity to talk about our great music scene, values, outdoor life, culinary wonders, and a booming craft beer industry to name just a few things that make Minnesota what it is.
Consider watching the full piece and then clicking into one segment about community support, one about our history in technology, and one about our incredible craft beer industry.
Minnesota has a very rich history with technology dating back to WWII and earlier. From Honeywell to Control Data to the UofM, we have invented and produced much in the ways of technology. We are a center of innovation in the country and somehow that history has been lost in libraries and museums. The documentary series will give us a platform to better tell the story of technology roots in MN and inspire us.
Stories are abundant in our technology community. From JAMF Software to iOT alley to Vidku and beyond we are creating products and technology solutions that are driving the world forward. We are doing great things and the documentary series is a way to collect these stories in an impactful medium and bring those stories to the next generation of innovators in Minnesota.
We work hard, we are a great community, and we are humble.
Be part of the story. Help us bring this to the world.
About the Project
Project timeline to complete is 10-12 months depending on amount of funding raised and number of segments we are able to create.
Funding includes funds raised from Kickstarter, donations from individuals and organizations, and sponsorships.
Funds will be used to produce the film including the following:
Our film crew needs funding to turn the cameras on. We have interviews with Minnesota’s technology leaders in lined up. Once we receive funding, we will be all over Minnesota filming them.
Once filming is completed, our next step is to dig through the many hours of footage and edit the footage down. Documentary films start with topics, but the story is built in the editing suite. With funding we can begin developing the story from interviews with brilliant tech entrepreneurs and leaders.
Once the film is complete, we need budget to develop and launch the website so that the film is accessible to everyone. From schools to organizations to individuals, this is a community asset available to all.
$20K While $10K will allow us to complete a certain number of interviews, $20K will allow us access to more Interviews with today’s technology leaders, historians, and the folks in the trenches that make it happen every day.
$30K The larger vision of DocuMNtary is to have a sustainable model to continue to tell the story. With additional funding we can continue to tell the story with three 5-10 minute segments about a variety of topics from education pathways to our arts and culture to our awesome beer scene.
$50K Additional funding will allow our team to invest more high quality gear to create more high-end cinematic shots of facilities and events that showcase our incredible tech community. Funding at this level would also allows us to create 6 full 5-10 minute segments and tell even more of the story of Minnesota.
Thank you for your interest in the project.
Risks and challenges
Risks include scheduling conflicts for filming, which we feel we have given a comfortable timeline to complete the project and manage this risk.
Another risk could be legal issues (minimal), we have legal advisors on board and ready to dig in if needed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
