I made this project with these purposes - razones:
- To introduce a fully organic Champagne-brand. Introducir una marca de Champagne organica.
- To start a company that cares for global ecology and plants trees for 25% of the profit. Establecer una empreza que se importa por la ecologia global y planta arboles por 25% de sus ganancias.
- To start a Champagne winery which has a permanent LGBT+ and Pride-profiled Champagne brand - the 500 million global LGBT+ population deserve it - and give 25% of our profit to NGOs working within this field. Establecer una empreza de Champagne que tenga una marca permanente de perfil LGBT+ y Pride - los 500 millones de personas LGBT+ lo merecen - y donar el 25% de nuestras ganancias a ONGs en paises donde la comunidad es oprimida.

Organic and Eco-sustainable
With this project I want to adapt a small part of the vineyards in the French Champagne-region into more Eco-friendlier production-methods and raise awareness about the issue, as less than 1.8% of the grapes from Champagne are organic. A figure which is far to low I think.
Con este projecto quiero adaptar una pequña parte de los viñedos de la zona de Champagne, en Francia, a una produccion mas ecologica. Menos del 1,8% de las uvas producidas hoy en esta zona son ecologicas. Una cifra muy baja creo.
LGBT+ profiled Champagne
There is no permanently LGBT+ profiled authentic French Champagne and I want to change this with your help. We will have a permanent LGBT+ and Pride-profiled brand, it will represent half of our production and be of highest quality (and of course also fine for heterosexuals ;). A proud rainbow lion shall be its mark and 25% of our company's profit will go to different LGBT+ NGOs, especially in countries where this community is oppressed. I firmly believe that it will have a constructive result to unite the status and tradition which French Champagne evokes with the status and innovativeness of the LGBT-movement, especially as a significant part of that movement today is composed by Pride festivals around the Globe and what is more suitable for such a celebration than Champagne?
Hoy no hay ninguna marca permanente de Champagne que tenga un perfil LGBT+ y quiero cambiar ese hecho con tu ayuda. Nosotros tendremos una marca permanente LGBT+ y Pride que representara a la mitad de nuestra produccion, y sera de maxima calidad (y tambien excelente para heterosexuales ;). Un orgulloso leon sera su marca y el 25% de las ganancias seran donadas a ONGs en paises donde esta comunidad es oprimida. Creo que tendra resultados muy positivos unir el estatus y las tradiciones del Champagne con el estatus y la inovatividad del movimiento LGBT+. Especialmente ya que una gran parte de ese movimiento se constituye en las fiestas Pride; y que es mejor para una celebracion asi que un Champagne?
The project also wants to raise awareness about global deforestation and how companies can contribute to amend this problem, we are going to invest 25% of our profit to plant trees together with the organisation "Trees for the future". I have worked with them earlier, when I started a company which provided the world's first green search-engine for the internet: Treehoo! That company, which also provided e-mail, music streaming etc., invested 50% of the profit to plant trees. It was awarded several distinctions, by Globe Forum (an organisation which also supported Tesla in its early days), the European Commission and also chosen as one of the world's best green search engines (even mentioned in research papers). The company, founded in 2008, was unsuccessful, possibly it was to early: the awareness of global re-forestation was not mainstream in those days. In 2009 I presented an estimate regarding how many trees we needed to plant to sequester the surplus of CO2 in the atmosphere, stating we needed to raise the amount of trees by 30%. It was based on NASA estimates regarding the existent amount of trees in the world, the calculations of how many trees have been cut since the start of the industrial revolution and how much CO2 has risen since then. This year, 2019, a group of researchers in Switzerland reached the same conclusion. We all know how long it takes for politicians to react and therefore I believe that private enterprises, such as mine, should start to invest in reforestation right now.

Why crowdfund a vineyard in Champagne?
To buy a vineyard in France is an expensive affair. In champagne 1 hectare (2.47 acres) of vines costs around 1 million euros (about the same in U.S. dollars). The vineyard I intend to start with is 4-5000 square metres (ca 1,5 acre), it is not the largest vineyard in Champagne, neither the smallest. If the project reaches the funding goal it means that we will have vines enough to make our own Champagne. It will produce ca 5000 bottles per year. If the funding goal is reached, we should all try to get even more backers to buy as much vineyard as possible - the best case scenario is 5 hectares (12.4 acres) which would let us buy a vineyard with its own winery and yield ca 50 000 bottles per year. Additional hectares would of course be beneficial and result in greater production. With an LGBT+ population on the planet that spans between 500 million and 1 billion (and, at least, as many heterosexuals who would like our fine Champagne), there is an endless market for our product.
Un viñedo en Champagne es caro, una hectarea cuesta alrededor de un millon de dolares. Aqui empezamos pidiendo apoyo para comprar media hectarea lo que nos dejara producir alrededor de 5000 botellas al año. Si conseguimos mucho apoyo podremos comprar mas, 5 hectareas o mas seria ideal. 5 hectareas nos dejaria producir 50 000 botellas - con alrededor de 500 millones de ciudadan@s LGBT+ en el mundo el mercado es practicamente infinito.
A chance to be part of something unique
The land for vineyards in the Champagne region is limited by the authorities and cannot be increased, this makes the prices of vineyards very expensive. This project is unique as far as I know and it might be the only opportunity you have to be a part of the exciting enterprise of French vine growing and Champagne production. As you probably know real Champagne has to come from the Champagne region i France - everything else is just sparkling wine.

The possibility to sponsor a square metre is also unique and your square metre will be searchable and visible on a map on our website, as will your name as member and Knight of our wine order. This gives you the chance to be a part of the history of the vineyard and the Champagne area. You will also be part of the history of establishing the first LGBT+ profiled Champagne brand. All this also constitutes a great Christmas gift to someone you care for if you pledge in someone else's name (pledge as usual and we will send you a mail where you can choose to change the name on the pledge if you want to give it as a gift).

Become a Knight of our wine society - L'Ordre du Lion de Champagne
The Ordre du Lion de Champagne is our own wine society, a tradition upheld in Champagne and other wine regions of France. See for instance L'Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne and the different orders in Bourgogne and Bordeaux. Usually this kind of societies accept a very limited amount of members, some only have 100 members, others a few thousand, we give the chance to everyone who participates to join. If you pledge for some of the rewards you will become a member and Knight (Knights in France can be of both sexes since Jean D'Arcs time, here all sexes genders and identities are welcome) of the fraternity for life (*observe that the titles are unofficial, just as they are in all other wine societies). The entrance fee is very low in comparison to other wine societies (which usually take 2000 euros), and might be raised in the future - the number of members could also be limited in the future. The membership is also a great Christmas gift. Meetings will be held in Champagne as well as in the different cities where members install their own chapters. You will have the possibility to visit us at important events, and participate in excursions, trips and courses at additional cost (places might be limited), and also receive direct information about our production and business. Membership in the society will give good discounts in our web-store. À votre santé! Please don't be a crime boss, dictator, war-criminal or someone with a heavy criminal record, as you will be expelled the minute we find out - the society is inclusive and welcomes people of all colours, sexual orientations, religions, social backgrounds, forms and shapes, you must be OK with that as well.

Your own Champagne-brand
There will be one possibility to pledge 1 euro/dollar to have your own Champagne-brand. You will name the brand and design your label (we can help), and we will put it on 100 of our bottles for 5 years (after which we will evaluate if the brand continues). With 100 bottles per year it will be the most exclusive official Champagne brand. This will not give you any revenues (due to Kickstarter rules), but is still quite an honor. The opening to pledge for this reward is going to be published on a random day and time on our project page while it's live (until the 17th of December). You should check in as often as you can! If you pledge for a reward from the 100 euros/dollars tier and up, you will be notified about the date in advance by e-mail, the exact hour of the publication will remain a secret ;)

A tribute to my parents
As said above I also want to honor my parents who always were there for me, my father, Altamar Bentancour, passed away this year and my mother, Corina Garin, is now 86 years old. My parents were born in a rural area of Uruguay and loved to spend their time surrounded by nature. They were in their early 40:s when there was a military coup in Uruguay which forced our family to leave the country for Argentina. After some years there was a coup in Argentina as well and we had to flee again, to Sweden this time. My parents are the most open-minded and respectful persons I've known, and they taught me to treat and respect EVERYONE just as I would like to be treated. Which is something I wish to cherish with this project.
I believe there are many reasons which make this project a good tribute to them: my parents always loved nature and were always concerned about deforestation and environmental issues. They also loved France, they and spent many vacations there as the french countryside reminded them of Uruguay. They loved Tango and if you know Tango you know it's very much about France. My father loved a good wine on special occasions, such as visiting our relatives in France. Their life-philosophy was always very inclusive, as said above.
Este proyecto es tambien un homenaje a mis padres, Altamar Bentancour y Corina Garin, que tuvieron que abandonar su Uruguay natal y luego tambien Argentina (asentandose en Suecia) debido a las dictaduras que asecharon esos paises en los años 1970 y 80. Siempre creyeron en la igualdad y me ensañaron que todas las personas somos IGUALES.
El proyecto es un buen homenaje ya que ellos amaban la naturaleza y les interesaban mucho las cuestiones del medioambiente. Tambien les gustaba Francia y pasaron muchas vacaciones ahi ya que la campiña francesa les recordaba mucho a su Uruguay natal. Les encantaba el Tango y el tango se trata mucho sobre Francia. Y a mi padre tambien algun buen vino a veces, en especial cuando visitaban a sus familiares en Francia. Tambien les imprortaba mucho la iguadad, como he dicho antes.
The company name - Béthencourt & Garín
As you probably understand my names are French and I believe that they will look good on a Champagne bottle etiquette, call me vain if you want. The Béthencourts (I spell it a bit differently because of Uruguayan bureaucracy) are probably France's oldest family, mentioned (as Baddanecurte, with reference to the family's fief Béthencourt-sur-Somme) already in a document by Frankish king Clovis IV in the year 693. I wrote this on the etiquette above as a fun detail. The black lion in the etiquette has been the family coat of arms since 1095. In 1402 Jean de Béthencourt rediscovered the Canary Islands, which had been forgotten since antiquity, and became the first European king of the islands. The family also held the titles of princes of Carency, barons of Saint-Martin-le-Gaillard and viscounts of Maulévrier and Gaillefontaine. In the 19th century my great grandfather, with siblings and parents emigrated to Uruguay, where the family lived until we left in the 1970:s. With that journey to Sweden the circle closed somehow as some of our ancestors where Scandinavians, such as Rollo and Bernard the Dane, which settled in Normandy in the 800:s. This long history of migrations is, I believe, a good example of how people and families move around the world and how difficult it is in reality to determine (as some people want) who belongs to a certain place or not.
My mother's family, Garín (known since the 1300:s), is from The Basque Country, which nowadays is divided between Spain and France, thus you find the same surnames on both sides of the border and like most Basque families we have ancestors from both countries.
Mis apellidos son Franceses, el de mi padre es probablemente el mas antiguo de Francia conocido ya en el año 693. El de mi madre Frances/Español ya que es del Pais Vasco que esta dividido entre los dos paises y es conocido desde el siglo 14.
About myself I can mention that I'm a classical archaeologist and ancient historian, which might somehow be reflected in this project ;) I have travelled to almost all corners of the world but find France to be the most interesting place. I have a passion for equality and environmental issues, as for politics and have been active in local politics in Stockholm, where I live, for about 15 years. I have worked in the fields of university teaching and research (in places such as Los Angeles, Melbourne, Oxford and Rome), and as chair of The International Education Advisory Committee of a Swedish University. Today I'm a member of the board of the Swedish Institute in Athens.
The idea for this project came when I understood (to my disappointment) that no current Champagne brand has a defined LGBT+ profile. Something I find strange, today, when more and more companies and products are rallying behind the community and its longtime - and ongoing - struggle; especially as the LGBT+ community profiles itself, for excellent reasons, as a joyful and happy kinship.
Finally: I also have a great passion for wine-making and nothing would make me more happy than funding this project and starting to work and develop in this incredibly exiting field.
Yo soy un arqueologo que me intereso mucho por cuestiones de igualdad. He viajado a casi todos los rincones del mundo, en parte gracias a mi trabajo en distintas universidades. He sido politico local en Estocolmo, donde vivo. Y tambien tengo una pasion por la artesania del vino.
Risks and challenges
The funding goal might be a bit to high for this type of projects on Kickstarter, still I hope that the uniqueness of the project will be helpful.
There are of course many issues to attend in a project that's so ambitious like this one is and some of them are quite complicated, but I don't give up easily.
It could be complicated to send out all the Diplomas in time for Christmas, I hope however that it will work as they will be sent out in PFD-format by e-mail.
I also wonder if there is enough interest for a project like this in the media and the general public - but no one will know if no one tries ;)
