Our project is to package and sell three infusion kits to enhance and change the flavour profiles of different alcohols. By following the recipe instructions included in each kit, you will be able to easily create infused spirits in your own home. Berlin Boozehound infusion kits are created to provide a fun introduction to flavour development in alcohol; they are ideal for anyone who appreciates spirits, whether it's for someone just learning about alcohol or a craft connoisseur. With the holidays just around the corner, our kits provide a variety of potential gifts for you and your loved ones.
The kits will include botanicals, a 700ml bottle with a custom label to display your infusion, a funnel, filter paper to strain the infusion, easy-to-follow instructions, and a unique cocktail card. Every recipe has been thoroughly tested for taste and quality. Note: These kits do not contain any alcohol; this allows you to choose your favourite spirit to personalise your infusion.
We need financial backing so that we can purchase everything, assemble all the kits, and ship them out. We’ve sourced all of the materials and botanicals from reputable suppliers (local to Berlin when possible). So far, we’ve dug into our savings accounts to fund the beginnings of this endeavour and create prototypes; now, we just need a little support from the community to get on our feet!
Alpha Gin
Alpha is our classic dry gin recipe, the leader of our pack. Alpha is crisp and fresh - perfect with tonic water or in a martini. It’s made with a mix of juniper berries, coriander, lemongrass, and the tiniest bit of black pepper for a little kick of flavour. We recommend using a standard mid-range vodka as the spirit base to really let the flavours shine.
Botanical ingredients: Juniper berries, coriander seeds, dried lemongrass, black peppercorns.
Noble Gin
Noble is our hopped gin and a tribute to German tradition. Noble hops are wild hops from particular regions of Germany and the Czech Republic. They are typically high in aromatic qualities and low in bitterness; they are traditionally the four varieties of Tettnang, Hallertau/Hallertauer, Spalt, and Saaz. For this infusion, we use Tettnang hops grown from their traditional area in southern Baden-Wurttemberg, since this variety pairs well with the juniper berries, coriander, and lemongrass of the recipe. Noble is more earthy and herbal in flavour than Alpha, but these notes are balanced with a light floral character from the hops. With southern Germany reflected in the hops, we recommend representing northern Germany by using korn as the base spirit since it’s a traditional spirit of the area, but a standard mid-range vodka works equally well for this recipe.
Botanical ingredients: Juniper berries, coriander seeds, dried lemongrass, Tettnang hops.
Voyager Rum
Voyager is our spiced rum recipe, named in honour of the travels its components have made to get to you. With Caribbean rum as its base and spices traditionally from the Indian subcontinent, the Voyager infusion is a truly international spirit. We use a blend of cinnamon, cloves, anise, and vanilla; it’s great to savour with friends and loved ones wherever your journey may take you. Voyager has a rich, sweet warmth that's delicious in cold or warm cocktails (try it in a hot toddy this winter - perfect!). We recommend using a mid-range dark, unspiced rum as the base spirit.
Botanical ingredients: Cloves, cinnamon, anise, vanilla.
When most people think of gin, they think of distilled gin. To make distilled gin, botanicals (including juniper berries) will be added to a neutral spirit and this mixture will be run through a still. The resulting alcohol will be clear in colour and should taste mostly like juniper.
Compound gin is a simpler type of gin, in that botanicals (including juniper berries) are added to a neutral spirit, left to infuse for a certain amount of time, and then strained. The resulting alcohol will take on the colour of the botanicals (usually amber in colour) and should taste predominantly of juniper.
It is often illegal and always dangerous to own and operate a still at home, so the process of making distilled spirits is something best left to trained professionals. However, making your own infusions is a relatively foolproof (and legal!) way to safely put a personal touch on your alcohol.
In our kits, we recommend using mid-range spirits as the base (a good rule of thumb is to pick a brand you'd normally choose to drink; cheap spirits are often of low quality and haven't been distilled enough times to remove harsh flavours, while more expensive spirits are of such good quality that it's not worth it to alter their flavours).
The infusion process is a straightforward concept: soak herbs, flowers, or whatever flavouring substance you prefer in the alcohol of your choice, then let it infuse for a certain amount of time as the flavours combine. Once you’re satisfied with the resulting flavour of the infusion, you strain out the herbs and voila! Your infusion is finished. (Tip: If you’ve ever made tea by mixing tea leaves with hot water, you’ve already made a type of infusion!).
This project has been years in the making, from a general interest in infusions to finally putting these kits together. We’ve spent our time perfecting each element of the recipes and putting careful consideration into each aspect of the kits.
Here’s a little background information on each part of your kit:
Our botanicals: Our distilling consultant Anne has an MSc in Brewing and Distilling, with a thesis project focussed on alcohol recipe development (especially with regard to gin-making), so you can be sure every recipe has been thoroughly tested to ensure the perfect taste and quality of the final product. We have made every effort to responsibly source the botanicals of our kits; when possible, they are organic and/or qualify for EU-bio labelling. We chose brown paper envelopes to mimic the feeling of seed packets you might pick up at the shop to grow herbs or flowers. Each packet is labeled with its ingredients and when to add them to the spirit, for ease of use. The envelopes are made from recycled materials and are compostable.
Our bottle: We're providing you with a 700ml glass bottle in a modern, square shape with a rounded top. The bottles are sourced from a German producer and are of the highest quality we can find. Each bottle comes with a custom designed label and will look beautiful on your home bar.
Our filtering system: We've chosen a stainless-steel cone-shaped funnel for its ease of use and simplicity. Some funnels have a lip on the edge, but we find that this interferes with the ease of filtration; therefore, a smooth, clean shape gives a better flow. We use V60 filter paper for infusions; it's strong enough to extract sediment, but fine enough to allow for clean filtration.
Exclusive Kickstarter Only Infusion Kit:
Rosa Mate
Rosa Mate is our love letter to Berlin, inspired by the ubiquitous Club Mate caffeinated soft drink found in every späti (convenience store) across the city. It’s a generous balance of bitterness and sweetness (much like Berlin, in that regard) and absolutely delicious on its own or paired with fizzy lemonade. We recommend using a standard mid-range vodka as the spirit base.
Rosa Mate is Kickstarter-exclusive as a special gift to our backers for their support of this project.
Botanical ingredients: Mate tea, rose blossoms, cane sugar.
Exclusive Backer Rewards:
By backing us on Kickstarter, you have the potential to receive limited edition rewards such as a classic cocktail e-book (complete with our favourite drinks), Boozehound stickers, and cocktail cards specially created for these infusion recipes. At our premier reward tiers, you receive a printed cocktail collection featuring all the custom cocktails, a personalised hip flask, and an individual spirit infusion tailored to your taste profile (a €500 value in itself!). Additionally, every backer will be listed in our permanent 'Hall of Boozehounds' as an eternal thank-you to our supporters and the community.
Berlin Boozehound is a website created as a welcoming place to talk about alcohol in the wonderful city of Berlin, no matter the reader’s level of knowledge on the subject matters. Our slogan is “A glass half full account of Berlin bars and booze,” a statement we feel resonates with our positive approach towards all things alcohol. The blog has expanded to cover topics like bars, beers, spirits, classic cocktails, and features of pretty much anything alcohol-related. We also offer consultations on custom cocktails or bar stocking (if you’re interested, get in touch!). The launch of our alcohol infusion kits marks our first foray into a product line and we are so excited to introduce them to the public.
Our team
Anne is originally from Atlanta, GA in the USA but has lived and studied in Scotland, where she earned an MSc in Brewing and Distilling. She moved to Berlin and fell in love with the city; the recipes for these kits were inspired by her experiences here.
Ubernacht is our stellar Berlin-based distribution team. They handle everything from promotion to design, working in tandem with Berlin Boozehound’s consultation. Brent manages the artistic direction and visual design, while Harry handles the marketing and localisation requirements.
Marvin has expertly handled all of the photography and video needs for this project; in the past, he’s worked with Deutsche Telekom and Gdgts.de. You can see more of his work here: marvinmachts.de and mydealz.tv
Risques et défis
We do not anticipate any major roadblocks in getting rewards to our backers, but there is always a risk of complication in any endeavor. We strive for success and feel that we can solve any problem through communication, persistence, and hard work.
Shipping & Suppliers
Our primary concern regarding shipments is the upcoming holiday season. If this project is backed, we plan to immediately begin fulfilling orders in an attempt to beat the holiday rush. We have double checked the reliability of our providers and are confident in their abilities to supply our materials and ingredients. If any delays arise, we will update our backers as to the status and whereabouts of their rewards.
International Import Restrictions
Different countries have different importation restrictions based upon the shipping of certain items (in this case, the main concern would be the shipment of dried botanicals). We will take these restrictions into account based on how many orders we receive; this may result in increased shipping charges or delays. We will keep all relevant backers notified if this becomes an issue.
