The Crescent Chronicles is a Gesamtkunstwerk of enormous breadth, ambition and style, and this is just the beginning. This humble Kickstarter will produce a small run printed version of Book One Chapter One - Sailing to Borantium. A 56 page magazine size graphic novel (graphic short story?) that will push the project out of it's infancy and into toddlerhood!
- The goal here is to have at least 300 copies printed!
I fondly recall the magazine style Savage Sword of Conan and Heavy Metal from the 80's. As a early teen in 1982, I wasn't allowed to buy them and the comic shops kept them behind the counter. Well. now I'm more than old enough, but I'd rather make my own comics! This little book will capture that essence, and isn't art just about capturing an essence?
The story is unabashedly romantic and kisses the cheek of cringe, like cinnamon vodka on a lover's breath, with Ennio Morricone playing in the background. Crescent-a-Corell, our designated protagonist, finds himself upon a planet not his own, and makes his way to Borantium. This, dear readers, is the land of my dreams, where Ancient Greece meets Feudal Japan - and this book gives you a formal introduction...
Take note- this a a comic for mature audiences and those who want to see the narratives of epic fantasy pushed to avant-garde potentials. If you are considering The Medici level of patronage, I suggest you examine my work at closer depth - jasonnickel.net and thecrescentchronicles.com.
This is my first Kickstarter campaign, I'm keeping it simple. The lion's share of funds will go to printing, with the remainder covering fulfillment costs and Kickstarter's percentage. I've chosen simple rewards that are mainly covered by myself. As an artist I have a very DIY protocol, not unlike a lotus habit, but much more productive.
I have created some very thoughtful and simple rewards.
Just added this reward! I'll be printing a very limited edition of the Prologue to The Crescent Chronicles Book One. This will be around 36 pages, so it's a great deal. It will be 7 x 10 classic comic size and contain The Song of Seven Isles and C. V Z. You know you can't wait for this!
Yep! Trading cards. The first in a series to come. Each book that is printed will bring more cards of more characters, so be the first on your block to catch the first two- Crescent and Zarrotta! Of course the back of each card will tell you all about these guys-don't you wanna find out?!
These are 4x6 color photo prints of details and in-progress paintings. Random and chaotic - they are one of a kind and will give you a small glimpse into the creation of The Crescent Chronicles as well as hints about the story to come. Pin them up, use them as bookmarks, postcards or just keep them for bragging rights that you were there at the beginning! Each one is signed by me with a brief, and barely legible, note.
Here we have the limited edition signed and numbered artist proofs - which also serves as my rough draft. I had to see what the book will look like once it's an actual object - so they are printed on a low quality paper and may contain some notes of mine. These will truly be collector items! The funded print will be canon...will this?
You heard it right! One humble little pencil drawing. These are the original drawings that work their digital path toward the completed work. Each drawing is of the Witch of Pito and each drawing will be signed and suitable for framing. (You won't know who the Witch of Pito is unless you read the book and even then it remains a mystery until much later..I'm a fan of the really really slow reveal..)
At the Medici level, you are entitled to do a studio visit here in Long Island City, Queens, New York, NY. The Crescent Chronicles is a story being told across multiple platforms, you can see all the current paintings and other work that won't be in this chapter. One hour long, and be prepared to hear numerous spoilers. Bring a guest and/or your entourage, you'll also get to hand pick a drawing to take with you!
This will be on a day and time in January or February of 2018. It would great to get multiple Medici's all in one place!
I thank you you for you time and interest and I hope to see you Sailing to Borantium!
(props to anyone who can tell me where "sailing to borantium" comes from)
Risks and challenges
There are very few risks involved in this project.
I have already completed a rough draft/artist proof, so the only work left to do is creative fine-tuning. (this will take many hours, but I'm an artist, that's what I do).
I am hiring a local printer here in Queens, so I'm getting a good deal and I will have zero shipping costs.
I'm keeping this project small, so I'm not trying to raise more money than is reasonable. This is my first Kickstarter so the possibility of organizational delays in fulfillment could exist, but January 2018 is pretty reasonable.
There ya have it.
