I'm Jon Eastman, Writer of the Fantasy Adventure Trilogy…
... and along with fellow team members: the Artist, David Ward, and Kelly Eastman, the Letterer & Graphic Designer, we wish to release the first installment of our epic story in a beautiful Hardback Edition that anyone would be proud to display on their bookshelf.
How beautiful? Take a look at our mockup:
For me the story began as a dream years ago – a man dying on a snowy peak as a massive city burned in the distance…
But since then, that dream has become a reality. In fact, book one is 95% ready for print right now – we just need the funds to print a top quality run of books.
Never heard of Murder & Midnight?
That's ok, you can check out the video above or...
It's about a man named Raith...
...who travels to a remote island at the fringes of the known world, his only companions his two black birds. All Raith wants is a chance at a fresh start, and he gets his wish when he meets a young girl and her uncle who offer him a peaceful existence on their farm. It seems like a fairytale life, but no matter how hard Raith tries to deny fate, the sickness that weakens his body, the secrets that haunt his dreams, and the ancient magic that tears at his soul all converge to force him toward a dark destiny tainted by regret, madness, pain, and worse...
Aside from Raith, Book One centers on a motley group of characters -- Loach, a surly, cowardly treasure hunter -- Winter and Wade, two companions on a mission from the mainland -- young Dawn and her guardian, Fox -- and the man who hunts them all, the twisted and cruel Bors and his bloodthirsty Pack.
Back in the old days (ok, so it was 2012... but hey, Kickstarter has grown by a factor of ten bazillion since then), anyhow, back then I ran a campaign to raise funds for another graphic novel series, 13 Legends. It was a very positive experience, and the whole team was blown away by the warm reception the final book received.
And now I'd like to do that for Murder & Midnight.
We want to print the highest quality hardbound book possible, and if we're fortunate enough to exceed our goal, that money will go two places:
First and foremost, the more cash we raise, the more we can upgrade the specs of the book. Secondly, extra funds will go towards the art expenses for Book Two.
Want extra copies of the book? No problem. Just adjust your pledge amount according to this chart:
So who exactly is behind Murder & Midnight, you ask? (Ok, so you probably didn't ask, but we'll tell you anyway):
Jon Eastman is the writer who dreamt up the story (and then forgot it in another dream... * bonus points if you got that joke), but then, more importantly, actually forced himself to sit down and write it. With a MFA in Screenwriting, Jon has written numerous film and graphic novel scripts, and also freelances as a story consultant and narrative writer.
David Ward is the extraordinary artist who breathes life into the characters and world of Murder & Midnight -- constantly amazing his teammates at how excellently he conveys the emotions of the characters and captures key moments of action.
Kelly Eastman is a marketing director by day and letterer & graphic designer by... well, also by day... who makes the Murder & Midnight website an object of beauty and, as letterer, endeavors to seamlessly link the dialogue and sounds from Jon's scripts to David's artwork -- an essential component of the storytelling.
Risks and challenges
Of course there are always risks, but I feel that the experience from my previous Kickstarter -- where I had a high quality hardback book successfully printed and shipped -- has given me a good idea of what to expect in this campaign. I learned a lot of lessons, including (but not limited to):
* get the book nearly completed before running a campaign, otherwise backers simply have to wait too long for their rewards
* the book printing process is a complicated ordeal, but totally doable if you're detail oriented and persistent
* the sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side
* and finally, all the work is totally worth it!
I'll do my best to keep the train on the tracks and will communicate any issues that crop up promptly and directly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
