13 Legends is a graphic novel series where the Arthurian Myths are reimagined in an alternate 1770s where the industrial revolution has come early, and the world is on the cusp of the reemergence of magic...
The First Volume
Volume One follows the exploits of two redcoats, Arthur and Lancelot, as they fight the armies of the Venetian Republic for control of the New World. The two soldiers embark on a life-or-death mission to prevent the outright defeat of the English, and move ever closer toward their destinies, and to uncovering powers greater than the massive empires that carve up the globe.
The planned scope of the full series incorporates many classic Arthurian tales into the body of an original, epic storyline that weaves these timeless, yet re-envisioned, characters and themes into an all new myth.
We're about halfway through production of the book and are raising money to help offset the cost of the remaining artwork. Good artists are't free... nor should they be!
Well, for starters... there's the book!
This pre-publication, hardback edition of Volume One will feature excellent quality paper to show off the artwork and will be made by a high-end printer. The story is over 100 pages in length and the entire book will be 130+ with all of the bonus materials we're stuffing into the appendix, like concept art, maps, and background info on major locations in the world of 13 Legends.
And the best part is...
...this edition is exclusively for our Kickstarter supporters! That's right, we're not going to sell this printing of the book ourselves outside of this campaign. We're not as interested in self-publishing as we are in creating more great content, so we'll be seeking major publication for the series in 2013.
We appreciate your patience!
We realize that asking you to wait for the remainder of the artwork to be produced before getting your book is a lot to ask -- especially in the age of instant gratification -- so we knew we'd need to give you guys something super-special for your faith in our project and patience. We hope this small-run of this high-end book will meet or exceed those expectations.
Set of Character Postcards
Backers who pledge $50 or more will also receive this awesome set of art postcards featuring nine of the characters from Volume One, with the finished artwork on the front, and rough sketches on the back. (And yes, we'll be shipping these separately from the books, so you can receive them sooner)

13, of course! We know it's ambitious, but we're completely committed -- as we hope the quality of the material will demonstrate. We're in this for the long haul!
As we said before, our aim is not to self-publish, but discontinuing the series is simply not an option -- artistically or otherwise. This isn't a fair-weather project that we're willing to put aside because it becomes inconvenient. (Hell, it's inconvenient right now! Any project of this scope is ALWAYS inconvenient!) It's not about that. We're committed to seeing the ENTIRE story of 13 Legends through to the end because we really, really (really) like it.
So, to answer the question -- if we don't get picked up by a publisher, or if we don't find the 'right' publisher, for whatever reason -- we will make the material available to our readers ourselves. Whether that would be by "self-publishing" or by starting a proper publishing company, we'd have to jump off that bridge when we came to it. But jump we would.
Yes and no. 13 Legends was conceived more like an HBO or SHOWTIME TV show. So each 'installment' of the story (each volume) is like an episode, and thus, has its own plots and sub-plots. But the uber-plot (the main thrust of the story) takes places over the entire arc of the series. In terms of this 'big picture', each of the volumes will build on the previous ones. But in terms of the episodes, they will each have clear beginnings, middles and ends in their own rights.
The number 13 has significance on many levels in the series... but you'll just have to wait to find out how. But what we will say is that thirteen of the coolest Arthurian myths are incorporated into the body of the series. Some are included as sub-plots, while others inform the main thrust of the core storyline.
No, certainly not! And we truly believe there isn't such a thing. The stories of King Arthur have been retold countless times, and many of the versions totally contradict one another.
Like what about excalibur? Is that the sword in the lake or the one in the stone? Depends on what you're reading... and from when... and from where...
And in some versions, Mordred is Arthur's son by way of his half-sister (tricked, of course) Morgan le Fay... but in many more versions it's his half-sister Morgause (called Anna at times, and even Gwyar if you go back far enough!) And in some stories, Mordred isn't even Arthur's son!
So when an author sets out to write the Arthurian Legends, they're inevitably rewriting them. (What would be the point of doing otherwise?) Certainly there are purists who will have strong opinions on what belongs where and why, but we're not concerned about debating Arthurian literary canon, we just want to tell a really fun and engaging story that's set in an imaginative new world.
That means everything and anything is fair game. We've got some cool things planned we think you're going to enjoy!
We made a decision early on to focus the first volume on introducing the world and characters of 13 Legends in a standalone adventure that also sets the stage for everything that is to come. We think it pulls off a nice balance of loose threads, but with a satisfying conclusion to the episode. (not unlike a TV pilot might)
Starting in Volume Two, elements of a few Arthurian myths we've selected to retell in the series will be introduced.
No. Currently, our plan is to seek professional publication once Volume One is complete. As we want to focus the majority of our time on creating quality material, we believe that teaming with a dedicated publisher will bring the series to the widest possible audience, rather than forcing us to divide our time between development and publishing.
No. This print-run is only being done as rewards for the backers of this Kickstarter campaign. You won't get this edition any other way.
After printing and shipping the rewards, and taking out any fees from Amazon and Kickstarter, the money left over will help us offset the cost of paying our artists to produce the artwork (very expensive). We can’t see a scenario where we will raise more money than the costs associated with producing the book (yes, it’s is that expensive)… but in the event that were to occur, we'll pump the extra money into the next volume.
Kickstarter makes creators include an estimated time of delivery for rewards, so we put our absolute best guess as December 2012, based on all the (many) factors involved in the production process. Could it be a little early or late? In short, yes, either is a possibility. Could it be much earlier or later? That is less likely.
In any case, we're going to keep our backers completely updated throughout the entire process so everyone is on the same page (as it were). What we're not going to do is skimp on the quality of the story, art or the printing, or otherwise cut corners. One thing we can tell you with 100% accuracy is that this book is going to rock!
Because our artists, Gian Fernando and David Ocampo are awesome!
