About the Film:
In 2003, Sandra Gould Ford approached the warden of the Allegheny County Jail with the idea of implementing an arts-based, creative writing curriculum to provide inmates with not only the tools to reflect on their lives and experiences, but also the resources to pursue writing as a career. Although arts-based programs in prisons throughout the country already existed, her pilot program was unique and pioneering because it was the first of its kind taught in a jail. Unlike a prison, in which the inmate population is fixed and sentences served can be long, the inmate population in jail is more fluid and sentences vary in length but tend to be of a shorter duration. Not to mention, for many individuals entering the criminal justice system, jail is their first point of entry and often times operates as a revolving door and a conduit into prisons. Recognizing such limitations with the criminal justice system and the potential writing has for self-transformation, Ford sought to reach individuals in jails to help prevent recidivism and promote her life long mission of healing and higher achievement. Write for Life illustrates the journey of Sandra Gould Ford’s teaching process and the healing process of her students as they attempt to right past wrongs, revise, and rewrite the narrative of their lives inside and outside of the Allegheny county jail.
