About this project
Welcome! Thanks for checking out my Kickstarter project.
My name is Earl Carter and I am a photographer. I have worked as a photojournalist for the last 45 years. I have worked at The Miami Herald, The Huntsville (AL) Times, and The Kingsports TN Times-News .I am sort of semi-retired now and working on a project that has long been a dream of mine. I always loved traveling through the Southern Appalachia region taking photographs .I enjoyed meeting the honest, resourceful folks who live in the Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia area. Taken over a wide range of time, the photos give a glimpse of changing traditions and culture in the region.
My dream is to publish this collection of photographs (over 200 pages) in book form. While it will be mostly black & white, there are many color photos also. As my title states, this is an album of glimpses at life in a region that is sometimes misunderstood. The format will be 10 inches by 8 inches in size with a printed, wrap-around cover. I realize there have been many photo books about Appalachia, but I have tried to do something a little different. My book will have an Epilogue featuring "then & now" photos with text revealing what has become of the subject in the photos. I found it very interesting to see what had become of them.since I first met them. I hope to place copies of the book in libraries of the areas covered in the book and see that each subject in the book gets a copy.
As you can imagine, a high-quality photo book over 200 pages is quite expensive to print. Most of the cost of this project is in the printing and delivery of the books, plus mailing copies to all the supporters. Packaging and postage are also big factors. If the response allows, I would like to have an "official" book release and invite all the supporters to a presentation telling about the subjects in the book.
The rewards are mostly in the form of books and prints. Postcard prints will be my choice and will be selections from the book. All will be signed with a thank you note. Some of the larger print rewards will be "your choice" of images from the book. All prints will be signed
For corporate or organizational contributions:
A personal presentation to your group with stories about the subjects insights to the Appalachian Region. Site of presentation must be within 200 miles of northeast Tennessee unless additional travel expenses are added. Interested parties should contact me.
Please remember that if the specified goal is not reached, none of the funds will be awarded for this project. If I should be fortunate enough to have extra funding it would allow for more pages in the book which is already over 200 pages long. A video version of the "epilogue" portion of the book is also a dream of mine. I want to interview many of the book's subjects to find out what their life over the last few decades has been like. Thanks for your consideration of my project. Only your support will make it possible. For more information please look at these other links to my work. www.earlcarter.com and www.appalachianalbum.com
