Inspired by the Occupy movement and the battle between action and inertia, Hero is an interdisciplinary performance, a communal catharsis and an experiential spectacle.

Art can be R&D for society. Hero looks at how we interact with the world as individuals, in couples, and in community. I think we are often good at two out of three. Hero attempts to integrate them all. This project is a call, an invitation to experience, action, and new perspective.

Through dance duets, solo dance-theatre with audience participation and a bilingual translator, and immersive sonic experience Hero asks the audience to decide where truth lies: heart, head or guts and to use that as a frame through which to make choices about what to stand up for and how to come together.

The show is fast approaching: April 8th – 12th at The Theatre Centre in Toronto.

We need to raise $12,000 in a month so that we can put on the best show possible and realize the vision we've been developing for the past year.

Here are the people who are involved:

Dancers: Linnea Swan, Christine Birch, Nicole Rose Bond, Brodie Stevenson, Brendan Wyatt;

Choir Leader and Vocal Composer: Christine Duncan;

The Element Choir;

Sound Designer: Debashis Sinha;

Lighting Designer: Pip Bradford

Producer: Molly Reisman

Outside Eye: Andrea Spaziani

Assistant: Suvi Kemppainen

I hope you’re able to help. I look forward to sharing this work with you.

Risks and challenges

I've been making shows in Toronto for 15 years. My work has been presented across Canada and in New York City. I teach and perform internationally. I've received over 30 grants for my work.

“Off the wall, impossible to categorize, fun” Montreal Gazette
“whacky, whimsical and wonderful” Toronto Star’s
“Uplifting, energetic and totally out of the ordinary” Theatromania
“O’Shea is supremely talented, and very endearing” The Marble

Here's the thing, we got some grants, enough to decide to make the project go, commit to everything, and then we didn't get some grants.

I have asked for support from family and friends and I am so grateful for their generosity. Now it's time to turn the ask out - to you. Every little bit helps, and all the big bits add up even faster. I am so thrilled to be reaching out this way to create a broad web of support. I can't wait to see what casting this net returns. And I hope that I discover some new people, and places that we can bring the work to.

This is my biggest project to date. I am so excited to bring it into the world. I hope you can be a part of it.
