Guppy Friend is the world's first microfilter washing bag.
It filters out the tiniest microfibers released from textiles during washing. The self-cleaning fabric bag is made of a specially designed micro-filter material. And it works! Independent research has confirmed the effectiveness of Guppy Friend (70x50 cm/27,6x19,7 inch). It captures almost all of the fibers released in the washing process. You can see tiny fibers trapped inside the bag after each wash. Simply collect the fibers and dispose them properly in your trash.
Using Guppy Friend results in two benefits:
1. Guppy Friend protects your apparel. The textiles lose less microfibers compared to washing without the bag. Hence, your favorite sweater stays new and you can wear it much longer.
2. The microfibers that do get released are caught by the mesh and don't make their way with the effluent into the marine ecosystem.
Guppy Friend won the European Outdoor Industry Award in gold for the most sustainable product of the year!
Why Guppy Friend?
Please watch our short video illustrating how microfibers make their way from your washing machine to your plate:
Synthetic materials are poisoning our oceans and food supply. When we think of the issue, images of plastic bottles and bags come to mind, but micro waste from synthetic textiles are a huge part of the problem, too.
The problem starts in your laundry. An alarming number of tiny fibers from synthetic fabrics are making their way from washing machines into rivers and oceans. Unfortunately, neither washing machines nor sewage treatment plants effectively filter out the microfibers. Once in the environment, these fibers concentrate pervasive bacteria and pollutants. The tiny fibers are consumed by aquatic organisms and result in gastrointestinal infections and blockages, reproductive problems, and starvation—problems that ultimately work their way up the food chain.
To date, micro waste has been detected in approximately 600 marine species. Plastic pollution doesn’t simply go away: Decomposition takes up to 450 years. And it is ubiquitous: 70% end up on the bottom of the ocean, 15% of plastics are polluting our beaches, 14% are in the water, and only 1% on the water surface. Microfibers shed from clothing during washing are a significant source of marine debris and need to be stopped.
According to a research team from the University of California at Santa Barbara, a city of 100,000 inhabitants releases a wash-related volume of microfibers equivalent to 15,000 plastic bags. A city the size of Berlin may be responsible for more than 500,000 plastic bags – every single day. Guppy Friend is an easy to use, uncomplicated, affordable and pragmatic solution to protect guppies and other sea dwellers.
Microfibers are everywhere. Yes, even in the air we breathe and in the beers we drink.
With each wash, tiny plastic fibers from synthetic textiles are washed out. The patented washing bag can be used for any textiles that contains synthetic fibers such as acrylic, polyester or polyamide. It's especially useful for fleece and synthetic soft-shell jackets and garments. However, even your favorite t-shirt and simple socks are contributing to the micro waste problem.
Our goal is to reduce plastics and micro waste pollution in the world’s rivers and oceans. Guppy Friend also has the purpose to draw attention to the microfiber pollution and to be a piece of the puzzle to stop micro waste. In addition, Guppy Friend helps extending the lifetime of your apparel - no matter if made from natural or synthetic materials.
Guppy Friend is super easy to use
1. Put your clothes into the Guppy Friend washing bag, so it is half filled.
2. Close the bag and wash as usual.
3. Take out the wet clothes and residues of microfibers from the inside of the bag. The fibers gather in the outer edges of the Guppy Friend bag. Dispose properly.
Don’t change your washing ritual – just its toxic effect.
The use of Guppy Friend will cause less breakage to plastic fibers. The amount of fibers ending up in the bag depends upon many influencing factors: one of the most important being the material. A single microfiber can't be recognized with the naked eye. However, the micro fibers accumulate at the border of the bag and can be removed once they become visible. Do not rinse the bag and dispose of properly. For more information, please refer to the FAQs.
Making the invisible visible: Micro fibers can be removed by hand after each wash or after several washing cycles. Over time it adds up.
The Guppy Friend washing bag is a first hands-on solution to fight micro plastics. Our solution in a nutshell:

What we need the funding for?
Material, material, material: The most expensive part by far is to produce our high-tech mesh. To even start producing a significant number of washing bags, we need to surpass a minimum order quantity. With your support, we hope to reach the threshold and start production as soon as possible. The nonprofit company for Guppy Friend has the goal to spread the word about microfiber pollution and to jointly find solutions to address the plastic problem. If we reach the funding goal, we'd invest a part of the money to set-up a 'zero plastic school'.
End October: Start Kickstarter Campaign – till December 4th.
November: Manufacture early bird Guppy Friends and produce mesh for more Guppy Friend washing bags.
December: Ship out early bird Guppy Friends and Guppy Friend 'Green Washer' Gift Card. Production of Guppy Friends and STOP! MICRO WASTE t-shirts, shopping bags, collection bins and mugs.

Risks and challenges
We have many years of experience in taking products to market. For more information please refer to www.langbrett.com. For Guppy Friend, we have done everything from developing the right mesh, finding the best production partners, to testing the prototypes. We feel prepared for small issues that always occur during start of production.
With your support, we are planning to have the early bird bags delivered by December 2016. We are planning to send out all other bags by January, latest February 2017. However, international orders could face delays due to unforeseen holdups with customs or shipping.
We will be constantly updating our FAQ page and responding to inquiries throughout the campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
