About

GETKU: The Getting to Know You Game

Sometimes we remain a mystery even to those who know us best....GETKU (Getting to Know You) is an affirming game of revelations and connections. The GETKU mission is to promote conversation, understanding, and appreciation among family, friends and community - one game at a time.

Who Are We?

We are father-and-son amateur game designers. Our motto is 'Do Good and Be Nice.' GETKU began as a homemade family activity at a holiday get-together. Answering the questions, listening to the responses, and talking to one another led to some beautiful moments of insight and connection. We left the game feeling this would be a wonderful experience to provide to others - GETKU was born!

GETKU Supports Special Communities

We believe that respect is a universal human right and that dialog leads to understanding. For this reason we have developed a number of optional 'Community Decks.' These decks focus on various communities where understanding and respect from the larger society remain elusive. There are Community Decks for Autism, Tourette Syndrome, LGBTQ, Adults with Developmental Disabilities, Lupus, MS, Families with Teens, Addiction Recovery, and Hospice. Each of these groups have a special and personal connection to our family and friends. Ten percent of all sales from The GETKU Game will be donated to a local not-for-profit (NFP) who support one of these causes; when ordering the game purchasers select which NFP will receive the donation. Please consider joining the GETKU community.

10% To Local Non-Profits

Kickstarter funds will support the production run for the first edition of the GETKU Game. We have partnered with PrintNinja for game production. We are also expanding our network of community non-profits through our Reviewer Relationship agreement - these agreements are how the local NFP become eligible to receive donations from the sale of GETKU games. The local NFP also provides feedback on the specific questions for the Community Decks.

Risks and challenges

Any project is accompanied by risks and challenges. There are four primary challenges with this project launch.

Game Play: The ultimate success of the game will be determined by the quality of the game play. Is the game engaging and enjoyable? Are the rules clear and does the game flow? Do the questions lead to greater sense of appreciation, understanding and empathy between the players. To achieve a high quality of game play the questions have been vetted through individual interviews and focus groups. Additionally, videotaping multiple groups playing the prototype led to a number of refinements to rules, modifications to the questions and design of the game components.

Production Quality: Identifying a reliable production company who can be depended upon to ensure quality control throughout the production process is critical. Thorough vetting of PrintNinja to include a review of product samples as well as game prototype have allowed us to enter this partnership with confidence.

Reviewer Relationships: We want this game to benefit real people in the real world, not some corporate entity. This is why we have placed a high priority on local non-profits. These are organizations we know to be doing important work in the community, organizations where we know donations will be put to good-use helping real people. Because this non-traditional relationship is unique, we need to build a level of trust in the locals NFP so they feel comfortable reviewing and recommending the GETKU game to their community.

Marketing: As a small scale, craft-style enterprise, marketing is crucial. Activating word-of-mouth, both in-person and through social media, will determine the success with the first edition and the potential for growth of the GETKU game. We intend to host game night events, attend local community days, and sponsor local fund-raising activities for our NFP Reviewers.
