oomApp Academic: Transcendentalism Interactive is an interactive app project with the goal of enhancing old ideas with new technology.
We're taking open domain resources and interweaving them with our multi-channel learning modes concept to create a truly new and immersive sensory experience. Our projections are that these new modes will expand comprehension of complex ideas, increase content retention and strengthen user attention span. We also think it's going to be a lot of fun to use. The angles we're getting on these great classic american writings are totally fresh, why be left out?
We're passionate about these works and ideas- and want to expand their readership. We think this approach is just what the doctor ordered for a new generation to interact with this wonderful, though dense and complex stuff.
The MI learning mode breakdown
While the theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) in context of assessing IQ is somewhat controversial, our approach comes from a learning prospectus: that processing content through a plurality of learning channels enhances comprehension, attention and retention.
other concepts at work under the hood of the app, besides the MI learning mode approach are, "spaced repetition learning systems" (SRS), active learning, and an adaptive learning profile.
The App concept uses a variety of learning modes to teach the target content. A review of the App launch features are as follows:
- a collection of American Transcendentalism works
- audio text sync, including audio readings for most of the content
- Vocab building tools, including memorable quote identifier and revision modes
- various analytically modes, including comparatve concordance displays
- Group learning modes, "pass n play" for a single unit study session or remote cyber mode with future releases
- adaptive user profile to help you track and improve your learning experience
*The app will be launched on Android (expected launch is in June). After initial launch we will port to a browser based interface. ETA on browser app is August.

Fuel for the idea came while teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in China over the last three years. A major pillar of TEFL pedagogy is adapting the target lesson content to learners using a variety of channels. I also taught Humanities for two summers through the Federal Upward Bound program, and was repeatedly shocked at students incoming reading comprehension and study motivation levels. On top of that, students just seems content to skip reading the primary sources and jump right to finding "the answer". This project is about exploring and questioning, not about grades or assessment.
Risks and challenges
We have the skill and talent to produce this product- we've already been cranking away steadily on the code and our team is picking up speed daily. what we need is the funding to continue timely operations.
The most predictable obstacle is a delay release. We think, however, that we have allotted ample room for testing, and cushion room for unforeseen issues that inevitably arise.
