About this project

In Scandinavia and the World countries are people. They live, laugh and love together as they explore their world. Some experiences bring wonder and excitement, but this day brings a problem: All of their stuff has been mixed together into a giant heap.

Now Scotland is fighting America over who needs that declaration of independence more, Russia is eyeing North Pole's oil and nobody will admit to having stolen Denmark's pornography. It's down to you to recruit your favourite countries, make the most of their unique talents and find the things that they most desire.

Scandinavia and the World is a wildly successful and deeply humorous webcomic that's been running since Humon conceived it in 2009. A Heap of Trouble plays on its themes of conflict, friendship and the recognition of our own absurdity.

The SatW team have been busy drawing over 200 pieces of never before seen art specifically for this game.

Countries are big wonderful complex places with all kinds of different things. Each card can only highlight one or two aspects of a country, so if we exceed our goal we'll include alternate versions.

In designing and testing alternate versions we've been looking for one of two things:

Quality. Cards that very nearly made it into the core game but were edged out because we came up with two excellent ideas for the same country.

Oddity. Controversial cards that are absolutely adored by some playtesters and utterly despised by others. We wouldn't want to these to be in the base game for everyone, but they'll really improve the game for some players.

Hurrah! All of the stretch goals announced at launch are unlocked. Let's add even more to the game:

Wow! The even more goals were also defeated. There are also a couple of blank cards for you to add your own character that got added as part of the "Special Lion" stretch that aren't mentioned in the graphic. Goals are going to become further apart as we move forwards, but I'm sure we can fit a couple more in:

Scandinavia and the World: A Heap of Trouble is a light 20 minute card game for 3-5 players. We've made a video to help you learn how to play (this video features a low quality prototype made out of index cards, fear not, the final game shall be printed on properly cut and cored cards):

Alternatively you can download a prototype rules sheet here if you want to see the details, or see the general flow of the game by peeking at this convenient graphic:

Starburst Magazine -  "3DTotal have produced yet another quirky and hilarious game that we can't stop playing."

As a print publication the full text of Starburst's review is not available online. To try to give a fair summary: They enjoyed how the countries came across, the core gameplay and found a lot of fun in the events. Their main criticism was that sometimes it would feel like there was a lack of buildup to the game's conclusion and it would end abruptly. The editor summed up his thoughts "Over all, love it. Hoping it does well :)"

Box of Delights - "A game that wears the theme very well, and one which delivers interesting game mechanics."

Digital reviewers are presently playing the game and as reviews go live we shall post them here.

Once the campaign ends we'll start finalising the stretch goal files at once, keeping you in the loop every step of the way. The shipping included in the pledge levels is serviceable, but basic. We guarantee that you will get your game no matter what happens - but be aware that there may be significant variation between the times at which backers receive their games, even within a region.

If prompt shipping is particularly important to you then you can upgrade to our gold shipping plan by adding £5 to your pledge. Gold shipping pledges will be processed first when we begin shipping, they will have full tracking information. If you fill in your survey on time and we fail to send your reward tracked in the first wave then we will refund the cost of the game and still send you a copy.

Risks and challenges

There are a huge number of things that can go wrong during the finalising, manufacturing and shipping of a game. This project has a few extra vulnerabilities beyond that, since it relies on the 3DTotal and SatW teams functioning together like a well oiled machine. Elaborating on every risk is like googling "What does my cough mean?": The results are deeply troubling and are of no practical value.

Instead, we'd point to our record. The previous Kickstarter projects for both companies have all been delivered. We've written literally hundreds of updates to keep backers in the loop. We've solved dozens of problems. When the worst has happened and things have gone unavoidably wrong we've issued replacements or refunds, whichever the individual preferred. We have a team that's dedicated and flexible. We can't promise that nothing will go wrong, but we can promise that we'll deal with it when it does.
