Since I was young I have wanted to be a mad scientist building inventions in my lab. This is my attempt to move in that direction. I have been reading and acquiring skills since I was young. I studied welding at a vocational school. I have read books on lasers, glass blowing, foundry work, machining, and many other topics trying to acquire skills to be able to make things. The problem is that I have no where to do my work.
The hackerspces around me are out of state for the most part and the only two I have any connection to focus on programming and STEM education for kids. I want to make a lab of my own and glass blowing seemed a good addition to the tools I already had. I have hand tools, portable power tools, a soldering iron, and loads of books. Glassblowing equipment would let me expand into making my own glassware for chemistry and vacuum tubes for my lasers and microwave cannons. It will allow me to make lenses and art to fund my work.
I am fortunate enough to have a lovely place, called the Tamarack, that caters to local artists as well as several nearby flea markets that could allow me to sell my work. I also intend to make a habit of recording myself and starting a YouTube channel. I would track and explain my work to allow others to replicate it and pick up the skills too. There would be a weekly video of me working on whatever I am working on at a minimum. I would also try to include a video where I go over a skill and a video with an interview with the founder of another kickstarter where they can hopefully get a signal boost for their project in addition to my supporting them with pledges due to kicking it forward. With just those three I would be putting out content almost every other day, allowing me to have a decently active channel. Videos of things that cannot go on YouTube will be hosted elsewhere and all of them will be linked at a central site.
The hope would be to get to the point that I could devote myself entirely to making things. Between selling my work and monetizing my channel in various ways, my work could become self funding. With time, I could even expand to allow others to join me, becoming a makerspace with many more tools and fields to offer to those who make the trip, enriching the entire area. I have a couple of vocational schools nearby that would churn out people with skills and interest in welding and machining. Not to mention colleges whose students might have a desire to make use of the tools or people. Others would be welcome to join me and use my tools as soon as I get them, but with time and money I could get more and have more to offer. That would also be the use of extra funds.
But those are concerns for the future. The direct result of this kickstarter will be personal improvement and adding a resource for people in the area, whether things ever get beyond that is not directly material to this project. I will be able to do things I have not been able to do and dreamed of doing since I as little, thanks to your assistance. Even if it is just me toiling away in my shop and working two jobs to pay for it, it will be worth it because this is what I have always wanted to do.
The money will be used to purchase an oxygen concentrator, bench torch, hand torch, compressor, vacuum pump, holding tank, annealing kiln, various tubes and fittings, various tools, the materials to fulfil the rewards, and to pay the various fees. Any additional money will allow me to get more things for the workshop. Unless the money extends well beyond the goal I intend to keep it focused in items that do not have to be permanently attached to the location. If funding gets to the point where stretch goals become practical, I will discuss them further. With enough money I could build a permanent location and do a whole series on building a foundry and whole machine shop from scratch.
On the topic of rewards.
Marbles! Glorious marbles as far as the eye can see!
That is right Americans, you can get special marbles from this kickstarter that will never be sold outside of it. Even if I start making money by selling marbles in the future they will not be the kickstarter marbles. I will use small rods of glass to make murine to place in the cores of the marbles and it will be used only for the items in this kickstarter.
These disks of glass have about as much intrinsic value as the money your government puts out but with a higher rarity and at least a million times as much love. You can show them off to your friends or convince people to use them as tokens of exchange. If you manage the second on a large scale, tell me. It would be kinda cool to know I'm minting trusted coinage. Like the marbles they will be unique to this kickstarter. The dies will be destroyed after the run is completed.
Inkwells and pens out the wazoo!
Okay, maybe not out the wazoo. These pens will be unique as they will all be done one at a time with me experimenting along the way. Pens will come with stands and will be matched with an inkwell if you select one of those too. Just add up the amounts for your items and shipping and pledge at least that much. If you just want the inkwell you will get the same sort of experimental work on your unique item as well. No matter what, it will be an item worthy of someone as wonderful as you.
Be a wizard.
All those other silly magic users waste their time with wooden wands. You will get a beautiful glass wand so that they can bask in its beauty as you strike them down with your magic. You deserve a wand worthy of someone like yourself. Your magic can surely get the money to pay for it.
Maybe steam is more your style?
Magic not your thing? Can't afford to have me tame bolts of energy for you? We got steam. Its based on an old design, but it will still wow your friends. With the help of a small flame it boils water and spins. Even at rest it is a beauty that will catch the attention of any who see it.
Lightning in a bottle!
You heard that right give me enough money and I will conquer nature and trap glowing bands and disks of energy inside a glass sculpture for you. With the help of a wall socket that is. I'm not quite mad enough to include perpetual energy devices yet, so no lightning without the power company. They come in several sizes to suit your needs and budget. Crack those piggy banks, or knock over a real bank, you know you want something like this to show off to all your friends. You're worth it. Let all who come to your home or off know that you command great power.
Save me postage 'cause you love me.
For those of you pledging from outside my grasp. Thank you. When my doom laser is complete your cities shall be spared. You can get a compilation of my activities, make me grovel in gratitude, or just bask as I remind you why you're so great. Honestly, I really do appreciate it. All joking aside, I really want to give you something, but the postage would eat me alive for most of the items.
Yep, if you give me enough money, I will come to you. Grovelling and flattery are still an option. Maybe you just want your stuff hand delivered by the creator. Perhaps you want to watch me make something. Whatever your reason I will appreciate your help and do my best to work things out to meet with you. Schedules can be hard to work out, but given my potential availability and your desire to meet me, we should be able to work something out.
Risks and challenges
The rewards may encounter a delay as production drags out. I will likely focus on what is likely to make the most people happy quickest. If I can churn out a dozen marbles in the time it takes me to make a pen, the marbles are going to come first. You can expect the more expensive things to take longer as they are single person items and require a consult. I will do my best to give weekly reports on what got done along with lists of what still needs doing. Obviously, the compilations are going to be the last but should be capable of all being sent out at once.
I could run into issues with shipping and cost management when it comes to the rewards as well. Shipping is no joke on larger items and is hard to predict without strict ideas of what exactly I am sending out. I will do my best to fulfil them and the money will definitely cover the equipment. The rewards will be the priority over personal projects and I will dip into my savings and income to make up the unexpected costs. That should help to mitigate the risk.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
