About this project
While this chapter of the project has ended, the story isn't over :). Visit us at BlackBookofCards.com to order yours!
Please help us bring this unique deck of playing cards into the everyday life by pledging here on Kickstarter for the rewards you fancy. Check out the Black Book of Cards deck that we created with you in mind.
Revealed within the Black Book of Cards is a typographic design using type to create form and pattern covering each card with words like the pages within a book.
The traditional court card faces that we all know so well come to life as typographic portraits. The meticulous process of building each word to form the faces delivers an almost life-like and tangible appearance without the use of shading.
We wanted the non-court cards within the Black Book to be just as important and design focused as the court cards therefore we treated each card as its own piece of artwork that can stand on its own.
We continued the concept of form, pattern, and type by utilizing the negative space on each card to create the actual silhouette of the pips building each line of text upon the next.
Each card within the Black Book holds its own by possessing a unique and time-intensive typographic design portraying a different look, feeling, and presence. Very fitting for the fundamental concept behind the deck with each card representing each one of us based on the following notion.
The concept behind the Black Book begins with the notion that we all have been assigned a card that is based on the day we were born…similar to our Zodiac sign that suggests personal characteristics about those who hold that card. We have always wanted to create a deck of cards that celebrates this idea bringing the concept to you through typographic design.
Each card within The Black Book of Cards portrays different personality words creating unique typographic designs. We have provided our own spin keeping it stylish, lighthearted, and design focused.
Use the below Chart Cards to determine what playing card is assigned to your birth month and day and don't forget to check it out for your friends and family.
As with any Typographic design, the font selection is an important one.
We selected a font, HIGHWAY GOTHIC, that is commonly used on road signs across the world telling you where you are and where you are going.
A clever font choice for its symbolism since we have all been dealt a card based on the day we were born but it's how you play the card that can lead you to where you are headed.
In our quest to bring another unique idea together with design, we have been working diligently on this project to create something you will find engaging and that we hope makes its way to your coffee table as something others would enjoy interacting with as well. Some of you who backed our last project may remember the mini-art print you received of the typographic fella walking the streets of Chicago made up of the words shine on, shine often. It was a hint to our focus on the typographic deck that is now here!
We hope you enjoyed checking out the new deck. You are an important part of the team and we cannot get the deck produced without you. Every dollar counts, so please find a reward you fancy and pledge. We have some exciting and amusing stretch rewards planned that we hope we can reach with your help. Thanks for checking out our project! And share-on, we love the exposure!
Risks and challenges
There are risks and challenges with every project that can occur outside of our control no matter how much planning we do. Issues can arise that involve shipping, production, and other unknowns such as natural disasters.
We cannot promise that our project will be flawless but we can say that we are prepare to tackle any obstacle that comes our way by keeping our backers informed while we work on an effective solution. If our last project is an indication of how we work, you can see that we effectively work through issues that arose with little to no affect to our backers and their end rewards.
In advance of launching this project, we have spent months working with our suppliers regarding production to work through any foreseen issues. In addition, we have weighed each reward to determine accurate shipping rates and worked through budgeting to ensure we raise enough funds to produce each unique reward. Having completed a successful Kickstarter project previously, we have a good process down for handling pledges, shipping, and fulfillment.
We hope you like the Black Book of Cards deck design. We have shared with you the unique custom tuck box, back of the playing cards, and several of the card designs. We are putting the finishing touches on the deck so stay tuned for further previews. Final production schedules are determined by USPCC and our partner printers for rewards so delivery dates could fluctuate but we have worked to ensure we built in enough time. In addition, we have worked hard to ensure the photos we provide are a good indication of what will be produced. However, all images of the decks, tuck boxes, and rewards in the above photos are mockups. The finished products may vary slightly. We will continue to update our backers on project development, production, and shipping status.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
