About

Boxel is a fun packed family party game that brings color to your game nights!

Try to score points by placing your Boxel in the matrix before it gets switched or destroyed by the other players. Draw from the bag and use cards to get control over your luck.

A fast-paced abstract game that is easy to learn and fun to play. The simple design and classic feel of Boxel makes it a perfect game for just about everyone. It only takes a few seconds to setup and around 30 minutes to play. It has an original and refreshing game mechanic mixing color connection and Take That.

All component pictures shown on this page are done using a beautiful but incomplete prototype. Even if it is always for the best, actual game elements can slightly vary from the pictures displayed here. Pictures will be updated as soon as the related game elements are available to be shown.

What’s in the box?

1 Rule book:

Full color rule book.

1 Bag:

A printed bag. Used in game to draw Boxels and to store the game while not playing.

55 Boxels:

  • 13 green
  • 12 blue
  • 11 red
  • 10 orange
  • 5 yellow
  • 4 purple

Boxels are ¾ inch(19mm) painted wood cubes.

24 Cards:

Standard size poker ink cards with silvery metallic border linings.

The game is available in both French and English.

Once the campaign reaches its goal, you will receive a confirmation survey that will let you confirm your pledge information and select the langage you would like to receive.

It is printed in 5 different box colors WHICH WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT RANDOM to all backers that pledged for a copy. The box’s color doesn’t change the game content in any way, it’s only for the look:

However, there might be way for you to get the exact box color you want:

An exclusive PURPLE BOX will be available for the first 200 backers along with a special discount price. Again, the color of the box doesn’t change the content of the game.

The purple box will never be printed again.

For those who like to share, or get it all for themselves, there is the COLLECTOR’S GIFT PACK. Get all your holiday’s gift list checked at once!

It is basically a pack of 5 complete Boxel games, one box of each color.

Note: pictures shown here are from an early prototype and are in no way an indication of the game quality. They are displayed only for learning purposes.

Setup:

You will have to keep the score during the game, a simple paper or some dice will do just fine.

Shuffle all the cards and place them face down in a draw pile.

Deal 3 cards to all players without showing them. Players can only look at their own cards.

Randomly select a first player.

Each player will draw a Boxel from the bag in a clockwork fashion until there is 10 Boxels aligned on the table. This line will form the base for the game Matrix.

  • Purple Boxels are ignored at this point.
  • Same color cannot touch.

If you draw a purple Boxel, or any color you cannot place on any side of the Matrix, just draw another Boxel and put the first one back in the bag.

When the first 10 Boxels are perfectly aligned, you are ready to start the game!

Gameplay:

Everyone takes their turn clockwise, starting with first player.

If he does not already have 3 cards in hand, the active player draws until he has 3.

Once it’s done, there will be two possibilities:

1-The active player does not have a Boxel in front of him and must pick one from the bag.

OR

2-The active player already has a Boxel and must place it in the matrix to score point.

1-The active player does not have a Boxel in front of him and must pick one from the bag:

The active player must draw a Boxel from the bag and place it in front of him to be used next turn.

If that draw fetched a purple Boxel, the active player puts it aside and immediately draw a new Boxel from the bag to replace it. Then he must choose a side of the Matrix he wants to destroy. All Boxels of the selected column (first or last) will be put in the Trash bin. This will happen each time a purple Boxel is drawn from the bag. The Matrix always gets shorter.

2-The active player already has a Boxel and must place it in the matrix to score point:

The active player must place his Boxel inside the Matrix. When placing a Boxel you must follow these two simple rules:

  • The new Boxel must be placed over another Boxel. The Matrix cannot be enlarged.
  • The new Boxel cannot be placed directly at the right, at the left or over another Boxel of the same color.

If for any reason the active player loses his Boxel, he must draw a new one and place it in front of him and wait until next turn to place it.

When a new Boxel is placed in the Matrix, the active player may score some point:

The point value of a new Boxel is the total number of Boxels that form a network of same color diagonally touching by the corners, including itself.

Yellow Boxels are worth double points, but are twice as rare in the bag.

If the new Boxel is not diagonally connected to any other Boxel of the same color, there is no network so its value is equal to zero. No points scored.

If for any reason the active player cannot place his Boxel in the Matrix, he must put it in the Trash bin without drawing a new one.

The cards:

Most cards can be played at any time, even during other player’s turn. You cannot wait to see where the active player will put his Boxel before playing a card on it. When the active player has placed a Boxel into the Matrix, it cannot be destroyed, stolen, or replaced.

A player that wants to play a card simply announces the card he wants to play. Other players must wait for the effect of the card to take place before announcing another card.

Card played are piled face-up right beside the draw pile in a discard pile. Shuffle the discard pile into a new draw pile if the active player would draw a card while there is no card left in the draw pile.

End of the game:

When all four purple Boxels have been picked out of the bag, the game is over. The player with the highest score wins.

Risks and challenges

Even if the components are simple and the game is manufactured by one of the biggest game maker in the industry, there will always be some risks involved in a project. We are very confident in our capacity to deliver in time, but it is our first Kickstarter project. We made sure we cleared all the obstacles and issues and are ready to go forward, however, some things can’t be fully controlled such as cargo hazards, shipping technicalities or even simple beginner’s mistakes. In any case, the only problem that could arise is delivery time being late, but never canceled.

If by any chance you find typos or other mistakes on this page, don’t worry, our game will have been triple checked by professionals before print.

In our best hopes, the game is delivered to every backer before December 2017.

THANK YOU!
