About

Let's keep up the free and hassle-free access from iOS to Radio Geek

About the Project

What's Radio Geek? Radio Geek is a monthly podcast series in Persian, published by Jadi, Iran's well-known telecom expert, who believes that being a technology geek is not only about counting the number of CPUs of a machine, or estimating the price of the next flagship phone. Jadi says that Radio geek is for people who want to stand at the convergence of society and technology to get deep into the news with a critical point of view, while I believe that Radio Geek is a movement that awakens, informs, and educates people, especially the young population of Iran to utilize technology positively with more awareness to enhance their lives as well as helping them learn more about the world around us, and most importantly, how to be humane.

What's Radio Geek iPhone App? As you can read from the name, it's an app that I have developed to provide direct, hassle-free access to all new episodes and the archive of Radio Geek, so that iPhone users can download the episodes they want and listen to them offline whenever and wherever they wish!

Why does Radio Geek need a dedicated app?

Unfortunately, the condition of Internet access is not great in Iran. It is very tedious and/or impossible to listen to these podcasts if you are in Iran and have an iPhone/iPad. The podcasts have been hosted on iTunes, but some of the episodes from the archive are missing there, and again, accessing iTunes from Iran is another disappointing procedure. Additionally, the cellular data coverage in such a vast country is still not super great, and is expensive, so if someone wants to listen to it on the way to work, they would have to download the files over wifi first, and transfer them to their iPhone, so that they can eventually listen to them on the way, not easy, eh?

Wait, but how many people do actually listen to Radio Geek? Its followers are several thousand at the moment (almost 10,000). A vast majority of these people live in Iran, and so many of them have an iOS device.

Why do I care so much about this? I believe in freedom of access to information. I am an Iranian currently based in Ireland. Before moving here, I worked in Tehran as an iPhone developer. I used to listen to Radio Geek on my way home every evening while being stuck in Tehran's horrendous traffic jam (or in the underground!) and it was very frustrating for me to have all these complications to access the podcast to learn good stuff. So I started the project to build an app myself that would make my own, and every other iPhone owner Radio Geek listener's life easier!

The Story

When I started thinking about building this app I was occupied with a full-time and another part-time job, as well as organizing a wedding and planning immigration (True! What else could bring me to this part of the world other than an Irish significant other?! :-) ), so I could never budget time into the project. Later after we got married, we were on an extended honeymoon, with plenty of time to do cool stuff in addition to our time together. So, what could be better than starting the Radio Geek iPhone App project while the other half was also working on another cool project? I started it back then, but that pleasant time came to an end, and we needed to move and relocate and start a new life, I could no longer keep working on the app as I was again working full-time. After settling down gradually, and sparing some time for my own projects, I managed to finish the app and release it on the App Store on February 2015 while I had purchased the Apple developer's account since July 2014 for a year.

I have hosted the app on the App Store since then, along with the occasional maintenance that goes to the server-side infrastructure that I needed to implement. Last year I decided to make the whole project open-source, and published the source code on my github for anyone who might be interested in it.

I had also thought of having ads in the app, so that I could earn some money to cover the expenses, however I am not a fan of that approach, especially when it comes to a good-willed, free podcast like Radio Geek which is being produced in the limited time of someone else, free of charge and free of ads and spam.

Popularity

While waiting for the app to be approved on the App Store, I was very nervous about the feedback, but this negative feeling disappeared with all the positive feedback that I received as soon as the app was released. A lot of users started downloading and using the app, and I got lots and lots of heart-warming emails, and positive feedback on the Store. Based on the stats of only 23% of users who have iOS 8 or later, the app has been viewed over 3000 times in the App Store, installed around 2000 times, and has an average of 33 active sessions every day, while the podcasts are published roughly once a month only. These figures will go dramatically higher if we take the remaining 77% users on iOS 8+ and all the others on older iOS versions into consideration.

In addition to all this, I have talked about this project to a lot of people in tech and iOS dev Meetups in Dublin, and have always received very positive reactions/feedback. The highlight is what Jonathan Nelson, CEO of Hackers & Founders at Silicon Valley said: "It's always great to make the life easier for those who are behind the walls".

The Funding

I have decided on a modest goal because this is my first Kickstarter project and I'd like to give it the best chance of succeeding while bearing in mind that the majority of those whom I know would like to help, are located in Iran which limits their access to the international banks for contributions.

I have already brought the project to life out of my own pocket and kept it up for the past couple of years. This campaign is aimed mainly at paying for the Apple's developer account that will expire on June 22, and the server for hosting the required server-side data to keep the app running and available for download. If there is anything left, it will be directed toward making improvements on the app. I have discussed this all with Jadi, and he is happy if I can get some good feedback from this project, and does not want anything from the minimum goal; however if the project turns out to be too popular, part of the funds will go to him to help him with the costs of the podcast production.

Cost Breakdown
Cost Breakdown
  • Of the initial €600, 10% will go to Kickstarter and processing fees, leaving us €540.
  • €100 out of this will be used to renew the annual Apple developer program membership.
  • €160 will go for the server costs, leaving us €280.
  • I need to pay taxes at 27% out of this remaining fee, which makes it roughly 12% out of the whole figure.
  • Anything that remains (roughly €100) will be used to fulfill backer rewards and defray maintenance fees, and will not cover all of it.

I am covering or have already covered the majority of this project's funding out of my own pocket.

Stretch Goals

€1000

  • Guaranteed hosting and maintenance of the app for the next three years,
  • Plus getting a special gift for Jadi (or the cash equivalent if preferred) to thank him for all his humanitarian efforts over years.
  • All backers will receive a special Thank You post card posted by Jadi, from Tehran, Iran.
  • All backers will be listed in the app's Info page from the next version onwards.

Risks and challenges

Risks are minimal. The project has already been released and has been successful. You are funding it to keep it up and available.

There aren't many challenges as long as myself and Jadi are in good health; him being able to record regularly, and me being able to maintain the server and the app.

0. Unpredicted Disasters: Unfortunately I may not be qualified enough to tackle this one!

1. Server Down Time: chances are low, and I can come up with a temporary server.

2. Changes to the RSS Format: This has happened a few times previously where the XML file generated from Jadi's site has changed to something incomprehensible for the app's parser, and I/we have managed to fix it by applying required changes.

3. Delays in preparing the rewards due to the risk mentioned in #0.

4. Misdelivery of the rewards: Backers should remember to keep their information/address up-to-date to avoid such hassles.
