Hi, I’m Alexander Winn, and I’m trying to raise marketing money for my new website, FlitterWeb.
FlitterWeb allows users to review, promote, and discover their favorite websites, online stores, personal blogs, webcomics, webseries, and more. Think of it like Yelp for the Internet. Websites can encourage their users to leave them good reviews and generate more business, and users can find the best website for whatever they’re looking to do.
Where is the best place to buy dresses online? What's the best stock trading website, the best dating network? Where can I share my fan-fiction, or develop my career? Come to FlitterWeb, read some user reviews, and find not just the first website on a search page, but the BEST website for you.
Registration, submitting websites, and writing reviews is all completely free. Reviews can be up- and down-voted by the community, and member standing is tracked through their Esteem, which unlocks new privileges as it increases. We even have a Developer section full of extra features that help website owners promote their sites, both on FlitterWeb and on the Internet at large.
FlitterWeb is a powerful tool, both for website owners and for casual users, and nothing like it has ever existed before.
The idea first came about when my fiancée had a mishap with the website “Rent the Runway,” which allows people to rent designer dresses for special occassions. It was a long story, but suffice it to say that by the end of the phone call, Lacey had been HUGELY impressed by their customer service, and she turned to me and said, “you know, I really wish I could leave them a great review... somewhere...”
But that sort of place didn’t exist for websites! Oh sure, there were a few websites for reporting scams, and there were some listings of “the best dating sites” or “the best social networks,” but there wasn’t a definitive review site for online businesses, the way there is for physical stores and restaurants.
There is now.
What Makes Us Different
And so we come to the thing that distinguishes FlitterWeb from other Kickstarter campaigns: it’s already live! It’s done, it’s up, you can log in and use it today. (In fact, please do!) You’re not going to be blindly donating to a project that you hope doesn’t suck, you’re going to be helping to support a movement that you can join in with immediately.
100% of the funds raised during this campaign will go toward marketing FlitterWeb and increasing its presence on as many platforms as possible. We’re going to be doing banner ads, social media marketing, print campaigns, hosting events, anything and everything we can do to get the word out about FlitterWeb, and we’re also going to be forging ahead on a FlitterWeb app for smartphones and tablets, custom-coded by yours truly.
The initial funds we’re raising here will be the starter money for those efforts, and we’re going to be working night and day to grow the FlitterWeb community and make every dollar count. This isn’t about making a thing, it’s about making a thing take off.
Who am I?
But who am I, and why should you help me?
Well, my name is Alexander Winn, and while you could easily have never heard of me before, if you have, it’s probably because of my Halo 2 machinima series, The Codex and The Heretic. I made those webseries in late high school and early college, and between the two of them my website got over 90 million hits. We were featured on MTV, NPR, the Dallas Observer, the Houston Press, XBOXWorld360 Magazine in Britain, and we were described by Chris Anderson, Editor-in-Chief of WIRED magazine, as “the best machinima I’ve ever seen.”
Since then I’ve graduated from USC film school, and I’ve been working as a freelance web designer and app developer alongside my film projects. I have over 10 years of experience with successful online businesses, I have 16 apps on the iOS and Mac App Stores with more on the way, and because of that I was able to custom-code every page and every line of FlitterWeb myself.
I have the skills and the experience necessary to make this website take off, I just need a little help from you to make it happen.
How You Can Help
And so we come to the most important part of this video: how you can help.
The first way you can help is the tried-and-true Kickstarter way: donate. We’ve got tons of great rewards available, from physical merch to online bonuses, and if you’re a Developer or you have your own website, we have special rewards designed just for you. Check them out, pick the right one for you, and help us reach our goal!
The second way you can help is by sharing. Share this Kickstarter campaign, share FlitterWeb, share your favorite websites on FlitterWeb. If you’ve got a website of your own, submit it to FlitterWeb and share that. We’ve got a Facebook page, a Twitter page, we’ve even got a Google+ page. (Yeah. We’re that serious.) Post your favorite reviews on Reddit, share our Developer tools on Linkedin, get FlitterWeb on StumbleUpon and Digg and everything else you can think of. If you need something from us, just email firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll send you logos, answer questions, anything you need. We’ll be using the money from this campaign to fund advertisements on as many platforms as we can, (although apparently not Facebook: they keep rejecting our ads because they don’t support ads from “dating networks.” Not sure what’s up with that...), but nothing can compare to actual users spreading the word. So please, get on the horn and tell people about FlitterWeb!
And finally, anyone and everyone can help us simply by using FlitterWeb. Signing up is free, and once you’ve signed up, just get involved! Review your favorite websites, rate other people’s reviews, try out a new site or submit one of your own. Not looking for anything specific? Just pick a category and browse, reviewing as you go! Most of the websites in our database have at least one review, but we could really use some website connoisseurs to test out and review new websites as they come in. We want to build a consensus about each website we have listed, and for that we need as many opinions as possible.
And hey, who doesn’t have a rant they’d love to share about Facebook or Netflix or JustinBieber.com, or some hidden gem of a website that they love to tell all their friends about? For my fiancee, it’s Rent the Runway.
What is it for you? Tell us on FlitterWeb.
I truly believe that FlitterWeb has the potential to do for online businesses and personal websites what Yelp did for storefronts and restaurants. The Internet is a huge place, and search engines are great if you know what you’re looking for, but they offer no context or critique.
If you only have a vague sense of what you're hoping to find, you need to read a review. If you want to avoid pitfalls, scams, and straight-up wastes of your time, you need to read a review. If you want to find not just the first website but the BEST website for you, you need to read a review.
FlitterWeb has enormous potential, and I’ve already driven us 99 yards down the field. The need is there, the concept is proven, and best of all, it’s already live. All that’s left to do is spread the word.
Please, help me do that.
