Everyone has a story. Are you ready to Spillit? Spillit is true, unscripted stories told in front of a live audience in Memphis, Tennessee. Spillit events are held quarterly and each event has a theme. Stories last ten minutes and must have a beginning, a middle, an end, and some sort of moral to tie it together. Some are hilarious, others contemplative, heartbreaking, suspenseful, and some reflective. The best part is...Anyone can tell a story!
We are storytelling animals. We can’t get enough films, books, songs, dreams, the news, advertisement, and conspiracy theories. We have this instinct that loves stories and the true ones are particularly powerful because they are the personal lessons of our common system of values. Whether we know it or not, they teach us how to live and when we share them with each other we feed that instinct and share in a truly unique experience.
To experience Spillit, there are three choices: Be a storyteller, come to an event as an audience member or listen to the podcast series online.
So far there have been two Spillit events: Rites of Passage and By the Campfire: Stories of Summer. Both events carried a $10 admission fee. Meeting this kickstarter goal for the 2013 season would eliminate the admission and allow every Spillit event to be FREE!
Spillit stories are available for listening online. We know a little, but not a lot about web design and it shows. We want the amazing Spillit to be showcased on a website that matches the quality of the stories, and that is more than we know how to do. Meeting the kickstarter goal will allow you to listen to Spillit stories on a nice website, using any browser.
At each event Spillit storytellers receive a gift which is a semi-secret collaborative work, a decorative pin made by artist Rachael Grant of Red Thread Art. Rachael's amazing work captures the stories told and is a beautiful badge of honor for these courageous raconteurs. Meeting our goal will allow us to continue this beautiful collaboration with Rachael during the 2013 season.
Risks and challenges
Putting together a Spillit event creates many risks and challenges. Spillit admires and so greatly appreciates the courage of its storytellers. The stories and the risks taken in sharing them are beautiful. The collaborative artwork by the talented Rachael Grant is so unique to each story and is made with so much care and consideration. The connection felt between the audience and the storytellers is one that cannot be found anywhere else but in that room. The challenge: How do you put a price tag on all of this? How do we show gratitude to the storytellers for sharing their tales with us? How do we thank Rachael for the amazing gifts she provides to honor the guests?
As the organizer of Spillit, I take a huge risk with every event. I don't know exactly how each story goes, word for word. Sometimes storytellers are people I've never met in person because we've only corresponded about their story via email. I've trusted my gut and so far, it's all flying colors. There is spontaneity and magic in doing things this way. It does freak me out, but I love it.
Spillit events carry a financial risk as well. In order to cover the costs of the event, there has been a $10 admission at the door. I have crossed my fingers that people show up, and for both events we barely broke even. When our goal is met, all events for 2013 will be FREE!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
