About this project
Recycling is one of the most fundamental, and easiest steps on the road to sustainable schools. However, many schools need help with resources, tools, ideas, and outreach to staff and students. GrowNYC’s Recycling Champions Program wants to help develop great school recycling programs at five schools in NYC, one each borough, from September through December, 2011. We want to devote hands-on time to working with all members of a school’s community in order to accomplish this goal. Having these model recycling programs around the City, will allow for the development of best practice guides that can be used at every school in NYC.
HOW IT WORKS
First, the coordinator will work with faculty and administration during professional development time, or other meetings to galvanize support and plan an outreach strategy for students. If a school needs additional recycling bins, or signage, the Recycling Champions will help secure the best options for the school. Next, the coordinator will engage students through fun classroom lessons, auditorium performances, and other activities. Also, any logistical issues with custodians will be worked out with the help of NYC’s Department of Sanitation. The school will have the option of hosting recycling drives or events that will also benefit the community such as textile collection, or Stop ‘N’ Swaps which are free reuse and recycle events.
The money raised through Kick Starter will be put towards a portion of the Recycling Champions Coordinator’s salary, resources for five schools including bins, signage, composting materials, and supplies for classroom lessons and activities. Funds will also be used to help develop a school’s Green Team through GrowNYC Wholesale Greenmarket Plant Fundraisers, and help sponsor events or auditorium and classroom presentations that charge fees, such as classroom worm comporting workshops.

New York artists Adam McEwen, Nate Lowman, Hanna Liden and Leo Fitzpatrick, collaborated with Reformation on a fantastic project to benefit GrowNYC. Each artist created an original design, and we printed a limited edition of them on our softest, cloud-like, unisex vintage tees. All proceeds from the sales will directly help GrowNYC in providing New Yorker’s access to healthy/fresh/local foods, to grow and maintain NYC green space, to help NYC recycle more and create less waste, and to teach youth about environmental issues.
