About this project
We conceived the idea of Organic Parking from a collective need for a better city parking solution. Having spent years driving (and parking) in cities around the world, we are no strangers to the difficulty of parking on busy streets. After researching barriers that exist with our current free-for-all system, we found three points to address: it's often hard to find a public space, it's difficult to afford a private space, and it's stressful to make plans without a guarantee of finding parking.
So we asked ourselves — what if a person that is parked where you plan to be could save a spot for you until you arrive? Well, with a greater portion of our population having smartphones, we knew that our solution relied on the development of a communication and exchange platform between drivers. Our solution is a smartphone app which facilitates this interaction so anyone can park a car seamlessly and affordably, no matter where, and never stress over city parking again.
The funds will be used to finalize the development of the app (we are a month away from launching) but most importantly your support will be critical in creating a community of users that will make the app work.
The app will first be available for iOS in June 2014 and then for Android (using bitcoins) in August 2014.

Risks and challenges
The challenge we face is having enough users so that, when using the app, there will be a higher chance that a spot will be available in the area you are looking. Support for this project will generate that critical mass.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
What about the fact that you're basically letting people charge each other for a community resource neither owns anyway?
To be clear, the spaces themselves aren’t for sale, nor is the right to park in it. Drivers must leave the space if another driver signals that they would like to park there, thereby canceling the transaction. What is actually for sale is the information — the knowledge that a space will be opening up soon. If someone else gets to the space before you do, you are out of luck but you don’t have to pay. Organic Parking is not really selling the space but merely communicates the information about when the current occupant plans to depart.
Organic Parking shares its revenue with the municipality that maintains parking infrastructure.
With this offering, Organic Parking hopes to reduce pollution by reducing pointless driving in circles, save time and money and improve efficiency by eliminating the struggle of driving past clogged roads to find free spaces. About 30% of a city's traffic is created by cars circling the block. These cars already reached their destination. But they circle until they find a spot. By joining our community you contribute to minimizing that circling time and the benefits for the community.
For this to work, both people need to be absolutely punctual, and any delays mean that one of them will be waiting.
The live connection feature in the app allows you to chat with the person you are swapping parking spaces with. You can even see the other person's exact location on a map so as to plan to be promptly on time.
Yes. Our Android version will allow users to use bitcoins (iphone version will follow when Apple allows it). There will be no commisssion fee for bitcoins. Our objective is to have Organic Parking work entirely on bitcoins and be commission free!
It means that you will be charged no commission fee for selling a spot. This is a preview of the "bitcoin feeling" which means no transaction fee at all when using bitcoins. Ever.
if your app is successful, will it not further limit parking options for individuals who haven't got smart phones?
When we deploy the app we will make a percentage of the city's spots inaccessible to our app. This percentage will correspond to the number of drivers without smartphones.
