Salty Avocado children's book by Chris Piascik & Aaron Cohen
Update: Everyone who ordered a book is getting a hardcover! We're still $37 away from our stretch goal of $6100, but we had to order the books, so hopefully we'll get there. Scroll down for Cyber Monday and Black Friday deals!
Update: Stretch goal added! If we get our funding over $6K, we'll be printing hardcover books. Anyone who has already pre-ordered a book, and anyone who gets a book, will get a hardcover!
The Salty Avocado is a children's book about a truly rotten fruit who finds redemption in the healing power of raspberry hugs. The book features Chris Piascik's vibrant illustrations and style-defining lettering matched with Aaron Cohen's playful and endearing story. This book is for kids who like big colors and catchy words, but it's also for parents who end up reading the same story every single night. (This is every parent.)
The Salty Avocado wasn't always so salty, in fact, he used to be one of the more popular members of his home in the fridge. Then one day, an accident changed him. It wasn't his fault, but after that day Avocado's mood turned dark and there wasn't anything any of his food friends could do. Little by little the other foods desserted (get it?) him. Soon he was all alone and liked it that way. Can anything change Avocado back to his gregarious self? With whimsical rhymes and rousing illustrations, The Salty Avocado teaches the value of friendship in the face of adversity.
My name is Aaron Cohen. And my name is Chris Piascik. We are friends and for almost a decade we've collaborated on a variety of different projects in our spare time. From the inane, to the inane, to the inane... OK OK, most of our collaborations have been inane, but not Pets Are Superheroes. That was rad. In 2013, Chris told Aaron he had to create a children's book for a final project in his Masters of Illustration program and Salty Avocado was born. (See how we subtly included Chris' bona fides as a master illustrator?).
In the last five years, a lot things happened which kept us working together as often as we liked. Chris Kickstarted three successful collections of his daily drawings, along with continuing to expand his freelance illustration concern. Aaron produced food events around the country, opened an ice cream store, and most importantly now has two little kids. In talking about what kind of project we might want to work on, we decided to dust off The Salty Avocado and finally release it to the public. After five and a half years of reading kids books, Aaron has a better idea of what kids like to listen to (and what parents like to read). Lastly, Salty Avocado is good and Aaron's kids are tired of being the only ones seeing it.
We're doing a Kickstarter because we need some help producing the book. We're hoping to raise $2150, which will be enough to cover the cost of finishing and printing the book, while also funding shipping materials and campaign rewards. After years of dormancy, we've been spent the last several months earnestly working on finishing the book so it may rise from the ashes like an avocado phoenix. The plan is to get these books in the mail in the first third of December, possibly a little late for Hanukkah, a little early for Christmas, and, uh, just in time for the middle of December!
For rewards, we've got a collection of book packages, including the ability to donate a book or two to your local school or library. We've also included a few rewards from a few of our previous collaborations, AND projects we're doing individually now which have nothing to do with each other.
BLACK FRIDAY SALE!
A long time ago, Aaron did an event called Guacaholics Anonymous, which was basically a party with multiple guacamoles from 10 different restaurants. Of course Chris designed the poster/tshirt. Well, we just found some of the original shirts in limited sizes and we want you to have them. From now until supplies run out, if you want a shirt, you can get one free with the purchase of a book. Sizes and quantities extremely limited!
Cyber Monday Sale!
Hot and fresh for Cyber Monday, we've got TWO sweet deals!
First up, it's a Piascik Party Pack for $26! Second up, do you have a dream? Is your dream about ice cream? Do you want to make that dream a reality? Today only, if you want to get two quarts of your dream ice cream shipped anywhere in the contiguous US, it's $125 instead of $250. You tell us what flavor you want to make (be reasonable!), and an ice cream professional (Aaron) will make it for you and then dump dry ice on it and send it to your home or office.
Risks and challenges
The book is mostly done and we know how we'll be printing it. We're pretty confident we can finish the books in a timely manner, though there is a slight possibility something unexpected will happen to create a delay. Chris has successfully executed three Kickstarter projects, and his learnings from those have informed decisions we've made for this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
