A big part of living this life is looking after your body and remaining in peak condition – not just today, but in the months and years ahead. As endurance athletes, we need foods that supply energy and aid recovery, but we have to be careful to avoid cheap, artificial energy products: ‘foods’ that provide a short-term boost but fail to nourish us properly in the long term.

Our Kickstarter campaign will fund the first large-scale production run of the initial product in our range: Rawvelo Organic Energy Bars. We have gone back to basics to create an organic, vegan-friendly energy bar for the modern athlete. Made from simple, natural whole foods, our bars use only the highest-quality, ethically sourced organic ingredients, many of which have been used as energy foods for thousands of years. With these, we have created recipes that make every bar a joy to eat, not just a nutritional necessity. Every detail is designed with athletes in mind: the size and shape of the bars has been chosen to fit easily into a small pocket while delivering the right amount of energy, and the packaging – made from recycled material, and 100 % recyclable – is specially constructed for easy opening on the move.
From the beginning, we wanted to produce wholesome and healthy energy foods for ourselves first as athletes. We had found that other energy bars came with a worrying list of artificial chemical ingredients and were not well designed for taste, texture, digestion, or consumption on the road. So we developed a range of bars with our Nutritional Advisor, Dr Claudia Gravaghi, that use a traditional, natural nutritional approach to increase energy and enable you to recover faster. Foods that work with your body instead of against it – and allow you perform at your highest level again and again.
We’ve thought about each and every detail of our bars to make the best product possible. They’re designed to remain light on your stomach while satisfying your appetite, and the texture and consistency of each recipe is carefully balanced to be easily edible and digestible when out on the road. Our bars have now been tried and tested with athletes of all levels – including endurance running coaches and ex-Olympic cyclists – in settings from Sunday club runs to training camps in the mountains of Spain. The results have been amazing.
The key performance difference is that our bars contain a balance of simple and complex carbohydrates – containing enough easily accessible sugars to give you the immediate energy you need during intense exercise, but also providing a slow, steady release of energy alongside this. This combination avoids the insulin spikes and sugar lows that can adversely affect your performance and eventually harm your long-term health. Protein ingredients also support recovery processes and prevent muscle tissue damage during long sessions. For this reason, all our bars contain balanced amounts of carbohydrate and protein, and our chocolate recipes also have ample fats from nuts that facilitate long-term energy release. Finally, all our bars have a dash of salt for electrolyte balance. (Incidentally, they taste great too.)

Rawvelo Organic Energy Bars come in 5 different flavours, containing an optimum mix of 6 to 8 premium organic ingredients. We use whole foods and selected natural flavourings to provide a great-tasting bar that nourishes the body long-term. I still remember the day I learnt to ride a bike. My dad ran along next to me holding the saddle: then I suddenly realised he’d let go and I was riding on my own. It was an incredible feeling of freedom and excitement. My horizons were broadened from that moment on. Cycling became more than just a sport to me – it was part of who I was. I got into BMX racing when I was about 10 years old, and my dad took me all over the country to races – a big part of my life, until I went to university. From there, I began a career as a cameraman and director in documentary film and television that has been a real adventure, allowing me to travel the world and experience different cultures.
In 2006 my dad died very suddenly, and it was a huge shock, as I always considered him to be healthy for his age. It was a real wake-up call for me. So I got back on a bike and reignited the love affair I had with cycling as a youth. I joined a cycling club, signed up to do the Etape du Tour and quickly got into road racing and track riding. I also became involved in youth coaching as a way of passing on some of my knowledge and passion for the sport.
As well as cycling, my other passion has always been food – eating it and cooking it. When I got back into cycling I didn’t just want to be physically fit: I wanted to eat as healthily as possible. Even then, I was surprised that healthy eating and sports nutrition products didn’t really sit hand in hand. The older guys in my cycling club advised me to do things in a more traditional way: dried fruit and nuts, bananas and homemade flapjacks – real food. That’s where the idea for Rawvelo began. Rawvelo’s aim is to spread this approach to other athletes – and give them something great to eat along the way!
I was really fortunate to be born in a sports-crazy country like South Africa. My school years were mostly spent playing rugby and cricket, and over the years I have also discovered a passion for football, swimming, athletics, surfing and golf. In my thirties, I also took up cycling, initially as an aerobic alternative to running. What I really love about cycling is its simplicity – that such a simple piece of engineering can be so rewarding, allowing you to quickly traverse such large distances completely under your own steam, and giving you lots of time to reflect on everything.
My obsession with sport has led me to a 20-year career in the health and fitness industry, which has taught me some valuable lessons. In the fitness world, things always return to the tried-and-tested basics. Nutrition in particular is a minefield of (sometimes contradictory) information. I’ve experimented with various supplements in training and competitions, and experienced the effects that engineered energy drinks and high-calorie gels have on your system. There is no substitute for high-quality, wholesome food.
That’s where Rawvelo started. We’ve meticulously considered every aspect of the product, from the choice of ingredients and measured moisture content for ease of consumption, to the convenient packaging design and portion size. Jason and I want to bring this philosophy to the wider community of endurance athletes, and that’s what Rawvelo is all about.
Dr. Claudia Gravaghi (PhD) is an Italian nutritionist who has studied and practiced nutrition at all levels. She runs a private practice consulting with individual clients, as well as serving as Chief Nutritionist for the Italian Medical Centre in Mayfair, London.
After graduating in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Milan, Claudia worked as a researcher at San Raffaele Hospital, later gaining her PhD in Experimental Clinical Nutrition at the University of Milan’s Faculty of Medicine and authoring several peer-reviewed publications. In 2006, the National Institute of Health granted her the R25 Career Development Fellowship in New York at the Weill Cornell Medical College, and in 2010, she decided to apply her knowledge of clinical nutrition to practice by taking a Diploma in Nutrition and Health at BCNH in London. She is also a certified Pharmacist in Italy and the UK (GPhC, MRPharms).
Today her practice is divided between Milan and London, where she offers a unique approach to nutrition – ensuring that all recommendations are evidence-based and helping clients create the right diet for them.

Risks and challenges
As with any first time project, there is always the risk of unforeseeable issues. We have conducted a test manufacture of the products on an industrial scale in our facility without any issues. If the unexpected does occur, we will tackle these issues as they arise and communicate them to our backers in a clear and concise way.
There is always a risk that specialist ingredients such as sprouted oats or the cold-pressed organic essences we use become difficult to obtain. However, we have a good working relationship with our suppliers and will be kept informed of possible future shortages. We have back up suppliers for most of our ingredients and we will preemptively stock up on the specialist products to avoid this issue.
There’s a chance our production facility could close tomorrow and leave us in a tight spot. However, we are lucky to be surrounded by co-packing companies around London that would gladly help us out. After all, we researched most of them when we had to decide on one. Our current facility is definitely the ideal location but we could easily overcome this should the problem arise.
Rest assured If our Kickstarter goes viral and we have to fulfill a huge order that we didn’t foresee, our facility has the capacity to cope.
