State of the Crucible 2018 - what we can't give you and what we can

Posted by Hespa

Hi folks,

You have been endlessly patient with us through two years of highs and lows, progress and setbacks.

So it's with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that Gareth, Crucible's creator, lead developer and driving creative force, has chosen to discontinue the project. This was not a decision made lightly, but the end result of a long and difficult period for him mentally, emotionally, and physically. I'm writing this on this behalf because he is right now recovering from surgery.

This is not quite the end of the road for Crucible, however. Over the last two years, Cosm Games has amassed a great deal of writing and art towards the finished product, and we want to share as much of that with you as we can - the Primes know you've earned it.

So, the rest of the team - myself, Ben, enthusiastic newcomer Luke, and our editor Scott - have begun work on a pdf release that will combine the most complete and up-to-date information on the Crucible setting, character creation, and game mechanics, as well as sample modules and the art and fiction created for or inspired by the world of the Crucible.

This won't be as polished a creation as the print book would have been, but it will contain a high percentage of the material that would have gone into that book.

Given that three out of the four of us will be travelling internationally fairly soon, we are hesitant to give a definitive timeframe for completion, but we are keen and committed to having it in your possession before the year is out, for all backers regardless of pledge level.

In addition, Gareth is still working through a long-term plan to recover some funds that can be put towards coin minting, and Campaign Coins are being very generous in their willingness to make things work out so that those of you whose pledges included physical coins will yet receive them.

I know this is not the news you were hoping for - it's not the news we were hoping for either. But on behalf of everyone on the team I want to thank you again for your patience and your support. We're not done with Crucible yet. Watch this space.

That's horrible news. I know you all put a huge amount of time and effort into this project and it must be devastating to see the wheels come off. If you ever want to try again let me know and I'll be happy to back you again.

      Hi Hugh,
I am very sorry to hear that news.
Please don't think that Gareth or any of the Cosm team take this decision lightly or disregard the value of your backing, this was a very hard choice at the end of a long road. We're doing everything we can to make sure backers are not left empty handed and will keep you updated on our progress.

This is the biggest hit I've ever taken on Kickstarter, I played with Gareth at PAXAU and liked what I saw. Kickstarter is always a bit of a gamble... but wow. $165.00 is a lot of money to me. I'll never back another Kickstarter again after this.

Thanks for the update! Considering all of the obstacles that you've faced, this is one Kickstarter that I think failed for the "right" reasons, rather than through mismanagement. I'd like to also see if the coins could be minted- perhaps this would also help in your recovering of money, as they could also be sold to those of us that didn't have the funds at the time to support at that level.

Whatever you can do to recover whatever you can is appreciated.

Thank you for writing on behalf of Gareth.

I would love to see some of the coins minted, apart from our personal belief in Gareth, it was what we really wanted to see from this campaign.
