A lot of people say they have a relationship with God, but that relationship can be emotionally abusive. It's time to break up. Read more

About this project
Who the hell are you?
I'm Hemant Mehta (pronounced HEH-mint MEH-tuh), the editor of FriendlyAtheist.com, I've written a few books which are available on Amazon, I appear in YouTube videos on The Atheist Voice channel, and I co-host the Friendly Atheist Podcast.
What's the story behind this book?I recently wrote and filmed an Atheist Voice video about how God was really no different from an abusive partner. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive (at least from the viewers who watched the whole thing).
- Is He ever absent when you need Him the most?
- Do you worry about getting on His bad side?
- Are His demands unrealistic?
- Are you afraid of what might happen if you leave Him?
It sounds offensive...We understand some people will have strong feelings about this project, but it's certainly not our goal to offend anyone.
Then what *is* your goal? Our goal is to get people to reconsider their relationship with God. We all know people who feel like they need Him, but we are both atheists who enjoy happy, fulfilling lives without religious faith. We know it's possible! So this is our way of offering a different perspective on God than the one people usually hear in church.
If you're religious, we hope it nudges you to think differently. If you're not religious, we hope you find it entertaining and informative.
What do the pages look like?
Like nothing you saw at Vacation Bible School. Take a look at some of the draft pages!
There's plenty more where those came from... if you fund this project! The plan is to create a paperback book with 8.5" x 8.5" pages that are pleasant to look at and allow the artwork to shine. We have 20 spreads (40 pages) planned, but we can make it longer depending on how successful this campaign is!
Okay, I have my credit card right here. But why should I give you any money?Turns out publishing a full-color, well-designed book without the help of a traditional publisher takes some time and effort (and cash). That's why we're launching this Kickstarter campaign instead of going through more traditional venues available to us. It's something new for us and we're very excited to see if it works!
All of the reward levels are on the side, though you're welcome to support what we're doing without asking for anything in return. (God will reward you in the afterlife for that.)
Tell me more about this mug I'll get at the $100 Reward Level...
It makes everything inside taste delicious.
I still have questions!
If it's about this Kickstarter, I'd be happy to answer them. You can leave them below or just email me directly at Mpromptu@gmail.com. That's the same email address my mom has for me. And I'd much rather get emails from people interested in this campaign than another crazy-font-filled chain letter from 1997. (Love you, Mom.)
Update: Because people have suggested that we're somehow making light of domestic violence, we wanted to assure you that's not the case. In fact, we take the issue very seriously. This idea of God as an abusive partner is not a new one and a lot has been written about the parallels. Many of those essays, however, are written for a more academic audience. Our goal is to simplify those thoughts and present them in a way that will hopefully be more effective.
To those who say we're trivializing the seriousness of abuse, we would respond by taking into account the millions of people who are taught to believe that their every move is being watched, that they are constantly judged, that they'll never be good enough, and that they deserve the bad things that happen to them. That mental torment will follow a lot of them well into adulthood, affecting their real world relationships. The parallel with domestic abuse is a very real one (other than that God is a figment of the imagination) and that's what we want to show in this book.
If you're suffering from domestic violence, please contact the The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
If you are suffering from religious abuse, we strongly encourage you to contact Recovering From Religion. They have excellent resources for people leaving their faith and a growing list of secular therapists.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge is just making sure the final product looks as we imagine it. But don't worry! We are working with people who have gone through this process before, and we'll do everything we can to make sure the final product is one we'd buy, too. Thanks for going through this journey with us!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Tracey (the illustrator) just so happens to be the person featured on the draft pages which is why it looks like only women are portrayed here, but we'll do everything we can to include a male in the book!
