2014 Dev Update #12: Porting, DLC, Gravestones, CC #5

This news article may have been updated on the forum.
Hello ladies and gents! It's been a long time since the last update! This one will be pretty big for all of our backers, it will be the final Gravestone and Casting Call for the game. If you miss this one, there is no guarantee that your NPC or gravestone will be in the initial release! Keep in mind that it wouldn't be difficult to patch them in after the game is released however.

Mac and Linux and ?

Porting the game to other platforms, including Mac and Linux will be done after the game is finished for Windows. It'll be done by an official party in partnership with Degica, the U.S. branch of the makers of RPG Maker. This means that there is a possibility of it not being ready for the other platforms upon release. We could stagger the release a bit to do them all at the same time, it'll be something to think about in the coming months.

DLC Stuff

As for DLC, I'm specifically talking about the extra chapters, Petula visiting the modern world and Petula starring in a horror game. These two will NOT be ready for the initial release. I'll be working on them after the main game has shipped. Although they will be marked as DLC, anybody who has already backed the Kickstarter for the game, and anybody who has already pre-ordered the game will be getting them for FREE. Anybody who buys the game after release can purchase them separately.

Sidequest Backers

For those of you with sidequests, please revisit the forum and go over your sidequest one more time to finalize it. I won't be able to reply to every single one, but once I start working on it I will be contacting you to make any necessary changes or limitations to your sidequest. Keep in mind that these side quests will take me quite a while to do so if you can limit the scope then it'll help me greatly. There is a significant chance that some sidequests will not be finished before the game is released, but they will be patched into the game in that event.

Red Barrels Do Explode Backers

It's been too long since I had a call for gravestone backers! This time we'll be going all out and giving you a choice on multiple areas. Make sure to submit your gravestone quote on the [Victims of the Red Barrel] thread!

Port Nasbeth graveyard

This graveyard can be found within the port city of Nasbeth. Being one of the biggest cities in the dwarven nation of Gillia, many notable dwarves are burried here. Although you can access it when you first visit, it's best to revisit a second time little later on. About 10 spots will be open.

Stregone Accademia graveyard (Magic Academy)

The Stregone Accademia graveyard is split in two, one in the main courtyard of the academy, and another underground, further from prying eyes. Both students and faculty of the academy rest in these graveyards. It's said that if you close your eyes, you'll hear the dead whisper in your ear. About 10 spots will be open between the two graveyards.

Elven Forest City graveyard

The Elven Forest graveyard is populated mainly with deceased elves. Although hidden from the public, those who stumble upon it say it's the most beautiful resting place they've ever seen. About 10 spots will be open.

Random Placement Graves

These graves will be strewn about the world of Cielo'viv. There is no particular graveyard to be found for you. You'll be a random gravestone, or perhaps an unsigned marker among rocks near a river, at the foot of a tree or behind the shadow of a mountain. There are unlimited spots for this.

Casting Call #5

The final casting call is here! If you don't have a spot yet, now is your final chance to get one. The doors have been flung wide open and everything is on a first-come basis! Remember that all characters in the Casting Call have the potential of appearing again later on in the game. If you have a sidequest in the game, you should not participate in the casting call.
[Sign up for Casting Call #5 here]

Casting Call #5 includes the following locations:

Port Nasbeth Casting
Stregone Accademia Casting
Uir Toer Casting
Petula's Shop Customer
Enox Empire Casting

You may remember the following projects from before, a few of our friends who are also using RPG Maker to make their games! They've come back with force and deserve another chance. Check them out!

CT: Demon's Revenge

A 16bit RPG and a classic Capcom arcade game combined, inspired from classics like Suikoden 2 and Final Fantasy 8.

Exile Saga - Once We Were Free

Danger, deceit, ancient puzzles and countless hordes to defeat. "Exile Saga"; the new, oldstyle 90's JRPG with exciting new features!

Hello ladies and gents! This will be a quick update to announce the winners of the Become an NPC Contest, and the results of Casting Call #4.

Casting Call #4 Results

I decided to add a few more slots to the soldiers for this casting call, so there are now two Valian Soldiers and two Enox Prisoners.

  • 1 Mechanic: RyBurrRy
  • 2 Pilot in Training: fcfthunder
  • 3 Merchant: GreyHeartedHero
  • 4 Merchant: zantar
  • 5 Valian Soldier: redbeardsean, CyrusCross
  • 6 Enox Prisoner: vash3055, Xwing Infinity

Those of you who have been chosen were because you replied early and your accounts were verified ahead of time. For those of you who applied but were not yet verified, I've gone ahead and done it myself so you no longer have to for future casting calls. If you have a custom sprite and bust, make sure to apply in the workshops on the forum!

Become an NPC Contest Winners

The Become an NPC Contest was a huge success! A crapton of people participated in all three avenues; Facebook, Twitter and the Forum, giving us their ideal NPC character. It was huge fun reading through everyone's characters, and the selection process was difficult due to the multitude of unique NPCs on display. If you didn't win this time around, don't fret because I reserve the right to contact you during development to add your NPC into the game! Yes, if you didn't win, but I want your NPC in the game, it will be in the game (with your permission). In the event that any winners posted here fail to get back to me in time or for any reason cannot accept the position, then another entrant will be chosen to replace them. Without further ado, here are your winners and their entries!

Facebook:

Jayme Ornsby ----- Veldin - a guy that travels to all the shops looking for the last item petula buys, but it's always out of stock. (Petula always gets last item) Results in him slowly realizing Petula keeps taking his items and him being angry with her.

Steve Wilcer ----- Atralane - A young man heavily engaged in the research of so-called "dungeons" and "temples" scattered throughout the world. Currently, he is trying to explain the unusual tendency of ancient peoples to use sliding boxes or blocks to open doors and get from one room to another... (As for his role, he could offer guidance on these particular puzzles or the area he is investigating.)

Twitter:

@f3thermoore ----- Bradley Trandt - A collector of rare pots and pans that can be found in strange locations (up in trees, under rocks)

@setsune_w ----- Chitters - A forest animal (raccoon?) bitter about his simplistic dialogue, gets into rants about his lot in life

Kickstarter & Pre-Order:

CUSTOM NPC: Omegastorm ----- Myst - A retired middle-aged traveler who promised to bring back the most "beautiful thing" in the world for his fiancee before their marriage. After some time, a month late on the day of the appointed marriage, he returned having succeeded in getting his hand on a valuable jewel but his fiancee already deceased from sickness on the day of after their agreed marriage. He can be seen in front of his fiancee's grave, occasionally, talking to her about his adventures. Sometimes, noting that he regrets leaving her and that his time with her was the most "beautiful thing" in the world.

CUSTOM NPC: Strongblade ----- Strongblade! - Claims to be a veteran man-at-arms willing to work to help the PCs in their quest. If allowed to tag along he will go on about all his exploits. Like how he single-handedly slew the Midnight Dragon. How he fought back an entire demon horde from invading. How he stopped an evil sorcerer from raising an undead army. Among countless other stories, but when it comes to actually helping, will be enthusiastic but useless. He also has an unhealthy obsession with bacon.

quinalou ----- Josef Shanel - Josef is an elderly man who lives in a small house that has been raided by heroes! Oh dear. He's a linguist and could definitely translate this ancient scroll from that dungeon for you - if only he had his dictionary... But the dictionary has disappeared in the troubling hero raid, and the pages have been scattered over all of Cielo'viv. Oh dear. If Petula finds them all - well, there may be something in it for her! Josef would do fun smalltalk every time you visit him and/or bring him a page, kinda like old men sometimes only talk about their past, telling another anecdote every second sentence. As he is meant as a tribute to Josef Shanel, a great German translator of video games and animes who did (amongst many others) a lovely German localisation of Final Fantasy IX, but also games like Kingdom Hearts, Pokémon or the Detective Conan manga series, he'd be dropping references to games or animes the man translated he's modeled after. Where exactly his house would be, in a village, all alone in the woods somewhere, in a town... or other details of him and his quest would be absolutely up to you to make him fit in as well as possible.

theredwolf ----- Heym Scare - "Town Crier" at least in his own mind, however all he shouts is essentially nonsense to the townsfolk. The townsfolk are kind to him because it's clear that he's not all there. The things he shouts out could be basically anything, but my personal idea was things that break the fourth wall, stuff like "I see you there, you who controls this world!" or comments on current events at the time of his creation. He looks like a fairly normal dude, lightish skin tone, goatee, brown robes, and a hood that it doesn't matter how he wears, that does not concern me as it's funny no matter what.

Kobanya ----- Athena Mirablis - A scholar that's interested in the lore of the different races. I could see her spending her time either at a Magical Academy, a library, or a museum. She would definitely have an extensive book collection, that she would be more than happy to share with the heroes, as long as they ask. :) She's got better than average patience, since she's used to teaching others, but I could definitely see her getting flustered if people started touching her things without permission and moving stuff out of place. All in all though, she's a pretty good sport about things.

Honorable Mentions

Picking through the forum entries was a challenge because of all the great entries. I wanted to mention the following people for their awesomeness. The winners all won by a hair, so don't feel bad if you weren't chosen! Remember, there's always a possibility of being contacted later on to have your NPC added into the game, even if you're not on this list either!

2014 Dev Quickie Update #10: NPC Contest update, World Building

Hello ladies and gents! We've got a quick update for you all regarding the Become an NPC Contest and a little bit of game development. After going through his backer reward, our very generous backer Loic decided to give up another two spots for the NPC Contest. The kicker here is that these two extra spots are Custom NPCs!

Become an NPC Contest Update

As previously said, Loic Arjanen (Arjanen is his family name, sorry for the mixup!) has graciously provided another two NPCs for the contest. These two will be fully custom. That means it won't be using our bust and sprite generator. Instead, our artists Hirei and Tegan will be illustrating custom busts and sprites for your NPC. These two spots will be going to the Kickstarter and Pre-Orderers portion of the contest, meaning you will have five chances of getting an NPC!

After careful consideration, I've also decided to add two more spots, one for Facebook and one for Twitter! So to sum it all up:

Facebook: 2 Generator NPCs
Twitter: 2 Generator NPCs
Kickstarter & Pre-Order: 3 Generator NPCs and 2 Custom NPCs

Making The World Feel Alive

In the READ Retro Magazine interview for YANTH, I (preemptively, enthusiastically, cluelessly, cockily, pick one) stated that I wanted to make the world feel alive. Being a 2D illustration-based game, I can safely say that it probably won't look as alive as the Elder Scrolls series. That being said, I still plan on making the world feel as authentic and alive as I can. I've taken a step in that direction by implementing some systems most RPGs avoid.

In the following video I've showcased a few methods to make the world feel less static. Pardon our dust! Everything shown in the video is a Work in Progress full of placeholder sprites, graphics and stuff, as made obvious by the "roof roof". Don't mind the camera stutter, I left too many browser windows, and photoshop open while recording:

For the first portion, I just made a few NPCs have some repeating autonomous movements that make them feel more alive. There's generous wait times for them to really ponder what they're looking at. Other NPCs are entering and leaving town, entering buildings and looking at things randomly.

For the second portion, I kind of went all out. This is the Nasbeth Legal Hall, one of the merchant license wings. In here I've made a dynamic system where NPCs wait in a waiting area for their turn to go talk to one of the dwarves working. There are also NPCs that are passing through, going back and forth from the east and north entrances. Almost nothing in this map is in a repeating rotation or static. All movements are controlled dynamically. One process handles the randomization of NPCs entering and exiting the room. The other one designates wait times for the dwarven stations, tells the NPCs when to leave (and which exit to leave through) and tells the NPCs in the waiting area that one of the dwarves are ready to take them. The NPCs themselves randomly choose whether they want to get in line or just pass through to the next room. You can stay here and just watch the NPCs go up and talk to the dwarves all day, and no single moment will be the same.

Now, imagine people in Skyrim doing this stuff and you tell me who did more work ;D kidding...

Hello ladies and gents! Honestly this development update should have been included in the last one, I just kind of forgot to put it in. I decided to make a contest out of the second part, because Loic Arjanen, our awesome Town Mayor Tier backer decided to give away five (5) of his NPCs! Anyway, let's start with something that EVERYONE can partake in!

Humble Bundle Keys

For those of you who may not know, Humble Bundle will be working with us to provide you with your digital content. This means you'll be downloading the game once it's finished along with anything else through their website. They've already set every single Kickstarter backer with a page!

Become an NPC Contest

For those of you who weren't quick enough to nab one of the tiers with an NPC, Loic Arjanen has been very generous and given away five of his generic NPC slots! We're giving away two to the general public, one through Facebook and the other through Twitter. We're reserving THREE for our Backers and people who have pre-ordered the game! You arguably have a much better chance of nabbing one as a Kickstarter backer or pre-order purchaser.

Learn more and enter by visiting the Become an NPC Contest page.

If you have friends who couldn't back or pre-order the game, tell them to enter through Facebook and Twitter!

Lastly, well that's pretty much all I've got for you right now. Port Nasbeth is looking pretty awesome, so how about a quick screenshot? This is still a WIP, with lots of graphics still unfinished and no polish added.

2014 dev Update #7: Devlog 3, Casting Call #4

Hello ladies and gents! This update will serve as a reality check for all of you, our backers, and all of us, the devs working on the game. Thus far we've been pretty open about everything, but I've kept certain aspects of development close to my chest. This is in most part due to my lack of experience handling a project of this magnitude. But first! Maybe a little bit of eye candy.

Magical Academy Library

A great hall of the magical academy where students study their craft and learn the history behind their powers.

I want to start off by saying that no, YANTH is not in development hell and that yes, it will be released sooner or later. I do want to dispel peoples notion that the game will release on September, 2014. You'll notice that I refrained from saying "release on time" because this expected release date was made way in advance, before the Kickstarter campaign was a roaring success (thanks completely to you wonderful people). The date noted on the Kickstarter rewards was an estimation of the time it would take to finish the game in its most basic form.

The date now is highly unrealistic, and I hesitate to announce one at all due to the enormous amount of work still ahead of us in finishing this game. Unlike other indie games in which mechanics play 90% of the role and level crafting comes easier with time, we're dealing with an RPG with carefully constructed cutscene's, story elements and low-level choreography (phrasing?) with what is essentially a skeleton crew to keep things in motion at the lowest cost possible. Regardless, I do want to say that I've been aiming to get the game to a mostly-finished state by the end of the year. Releasing it then would probably mean cutting corners and losing the polish I'd like to keep consistent throughout the game.

What I want to say is that great games shouldn't be hurried. Blizzard and Valve are two well known gaming studios that don't give out release dates on their games until it's a sure thing, and I believe that their methods of operation are what indie developers should strive for, not the ones inundated with deadlines made by publishers to release a game in a scheduled delivery window. That being said, I know many indie devs struggle with perfectionism, in which we get stuck in an endless cycle of creation, playtesting, and polishing to the point that a game never gets released. I'll be avoiding this like a plague, trying to balance polish with time management.

That got pretty ranty, but I think it had to be said. There is no release date for the game, but I will be doing my very best to release it by the end of the year. The most likely scenario is that development may bleed over to 2015.

New Team Members

I shouldn't forget to mention that I have been scouting new members for the development team. One in particular is currently being evaluated in his ability to get work done. This person will be in charge of side quests, in particular the backer sidequests. Make no mistake however, I'll be making sure his work is up to par (if not better than mine).

I'm also currently looking for another pixel artist to join the team. I wanted to avoid saying it, but my work at the moment is being hindered because of how far behind we are with the environmental tilesets. I wanted to ask you guys, our backers if you had any suggestions or contact with anybody that may be interested in joining as a pixel artist contractor.

Casting Call #3 Results

Casting Call #3 was a roaring success! I decided to add two extra slots to the call, giving us a total of 8 new backer NPCs:

  • Xenliad
  • Nicon
  • slashmastah
  • Varren
  • azrall
  • Metus the Acolyte
  • saboor707
  • takajou

Those of you who have been chosen were because you replied early and your accounts were verified ahead of time. For those of you who applied but were not yet verified, I've gone ahead and done it myself so you no longer have to for future casting calls. If you have a custom sprite and bust, make sure to apply in the workshops on the forum!

Casting Call #4
Winged Zephyr: Airship Crew

The Winged Zephyr is the latest airship prototype. Built for speed and precision, it belongs to the country of Gillia. Its primary role is that of a merchant ship, carrying rare, exotic merchandise from one country to the next. Due to the unpredictable wind patterns of Cielo'viv, airships built for war were highly ineffective against one another, often flying past its target or shooting into empty air. The most effective tactic was to ram another airship and board it, crippling both in the process. They proved to be useless due to their cost, with the remaining airships retrofitted to become merchant ships after the war.

Sign up if you're in the Annoying Follower tier or higher here!

Remember that you're only eligible if your Kickstarter tier included an NPC.

Legena: Union Tides

"legena, n. - a legend that spans an era: the legend of the Narrator Legena is a turn-based 2D RPG series inspired by 16-bit classics with a unique take on time travel, superheroes and morality."

The game is being developed by Grandpa Pixel with a fully custom engine. If you've been itching for a retro-styled RPG, this is your chance! Don't be fooled by the cover art. The music by itself mesmerized me and I really want this project to meet its funding goal!
