About

Hey, everybody! We're back! In 2014, we launched a Kickstarter to fund artwork for Epic R.A.G.E. Sadly, we did not make goal. Here it is if you're curious: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/812349862/epic-rage-the-flagship-title-from-vindicant-game-s?ref=nav_search

Did we let that get us down? Not for long. While any setback can be disheartening, we took the opportunity to put the system through several more rounds of intense play-testing and two more showcases at our local gaming convention.

Just as before, we are seeking funds for artwork and initial production. And speaking of setbacks, we've been having major technical difficulties trying to upload a video, so click on the link to our old Kickstarter and watch that one or click here to watch it on YouTube: EPIC RAGE RPG Crowdfunding Video. But enough about the why's for now. Let's get to the good stuff: what. What exactly is it that you are being asked to back?

As the video mentions, Epic R.A.G.E. is an original table-top rpg that utilizes common six-sided dice that can be found in most standard board games. When I set out to create this system, I had one main goal in mind: to design a fun, functional game that could be contained within a single book. This was accomplished by abandoning certain paradigms in mainstream rpgs.

First, we eliminated levels. That part was easy. A simple build point system accomplished that.

Second, we eliminated classes. While classless rpgs are nothing new, many people tend to like classes and all the special things they allow a character to do. To solve this apparent dichotomy between medieval high fantasy and classless gaming, we approached things from two sides. Instead of permitting certain characters to do certain things, our rules permit any character to attempt nearly anything. Players in Epic R.A.G.E. are limited mainly by their imaginations and the way their points are distributed. Next, we created R.A.G.E.'s Fatigue system. It levels the playing field between any character archetype a player wants to envision. It governs everything from swinging a sword to picking a lock to casting magic to swaying a crowd.

Another design element that permitted us to pack everything into a single volume is our approach to magic. As a staple of fantasy gaming, magic presents a challenge for game designers and game masters alike. How do you get enough spells into one book to keep everyone happy and still keep the cost low enough to make their budgets happy, too? Easy! Don't. Epic R.A.G.E. has no spells. So, then, how does magic work, you ask? To which we respond: How DOES your magic work? The answer to this question is what we call narrative magic, and is left up to players (and, to a lesser extent, game masters) to define. Our rules are primarily concerned with addressing the question What does your magic do? However it does whatever it does, it is governed by the same build point and Fatigue systems as all other character actions.

A secondary goal was to design a system that limited the inherent drawback of most point-built character generation systems out there: time. As anyone who has ever experienced a game system that uses allotted points to generate characters knows, making a character can take hours. While this process can be quite entertaining for a certain type of mindset, most players, especially new ones, tend to get frustrated and wonder When do we actually get to play this thing?! After countless drawing-board sessions, we have streamlined our character creation system to the point where a player familiar with the rules can flesh out a fully playable unique character in five to ten minutes.

Here's a character sheet to illustrate things a bit.

Good news for game masters: We liked that five to ten minute design time so much, we incorporated it into virtually every aspect of the game. Need an NPC fleshed out? Five to ten minutes and it's ready. Need a monster we didn't include in our bestiary? Five to ten minutes. Need to design a forest glen, an abandoned temple, a whole city, an entire kingdom, or even a vast empire? Five to ten, baby!

Risks and challenges

As was the case with our first Kickstarter attempt, we are going to need to commission illustrations. While our estimated shipping dates should allow us ample time to put everything together, there is still a slight chance that the artwork could take longer to amass or that unforeseen delays develop in the printing process. While we have taken extensive measures to limit the potential impact of such issues to our overall completion, they do still exist.

In the unlikely event our release date is missed due to this potential snag, we will be shipping perk packets with extra bonus goodies based on our overall level of funding. Since the only thing that would be impacted by a delay in artwork is the game book itself, these post release date bonuses will be for book-level contributors ($35 and up.)
