Way back in 2003 LoadingReadyRun turned a young, naive internet on its head with a never-before-seen concept—put up a new short sketch each week, every week, without fail. We’ve been working on this now for almost 10 years, and we’ve produced over 500 videos.
Over the last decade, LoadingReadyRun has grown enormously, going from Graham and Paul’s part time hobby-project, to an organization with full time employees and a whole raft of paid contributors!
But how did this happen? Well… gradually. In order to make the videos look better, we had to buy better cameras and computers. Then we needed to rent an office so we had somewhere to meet and keep our growing collection of props and costumes. Then the videos started getting more complicated and bigger in scope - it started taking so long to film a weekly video, we had to begin paying ourselves and our contributors…
The ad revenue and merch sales didn’t cover what we needed to spend on locations, costumes, props, rent, salary and contributor fees, so we started financing LoadingReadyRun by taking on contract jobs on the side. Projects we’re enormously proud of like Friday Nights for Wizards of the Coast, Strip Search for Penny Arcade, and the animated shorts we created for Nimblebit. Projects like this helped us turn a fun idea into a business—with overhead, obligations, and livelihoods depending on it. And we grew as a result.
We want to keep growing, and as much as we love the weekly sketches, we can’t juggle them and newer, bigger projects. So we’ve decided to stop on our terms and give the weekly sketches one final season.
But we want to send out our weekly sketches on a high note! So instead of just stopping the sketches so we can do other projects, we want the sketches to be our next project, and we would like you to help us!
We want to make the 11th and final full year of our weekly sketches the best ever! So why stop at just sketches? "The YRR of LRR" (as Graham is calling it, much to our chagrin) will include:
52 Weekly LRR Sketches - The weekly videos you have come to know and love these past ten years will return for one last season.
LoadingReadyLive Streaming - We will transform our second office into a streaming studio, complete with a PC, Xbox 360, PS3 (and Xbox One & PS4, when available). Using this sweet second office, the various crew members and friends will stream a variety of games for your entertainment. Everything from Magic Online, to retro games, to Kathleen’s incredible JRPG backlog! Come and spend some time with us!
The Podcasts… but like, actually on time - Yes, really. Less time on side-projects means we can commit to the 'casts! Enjoy six podcasts a month! A new episode of our casual Magic podcast TapTapConcede every week, and a new LRRcast every two weeks.
Loading Time Continues! - Our ongoing series of behind-the-scenes videos takes a look into our week-to-week goings-on!
Our goal is to raise $135,000. We've done a lot of math to make sure we are asking for the right amount. The last thing we want to do is make the crowd-funding mistake of asking for too little, and ruining ourselves. $135,000 will pay for:
- Production costs for a year of sketches, podcasts, and streams
- Wages for Graham, Paul, Kathleen, and James
- Contributor payments for people like Beej, Cam, Jer, Matt, Alex, Bradley and many, many others
- An expanded equipment, props, costumes, and locations budget
- Fixed overhead costs like rent, utilities
- Pins, posters, t-shirts, DVDs, and other backer rewards
- Taxes and administrative fees
Now that we've reached our funding goal, we've rearranged this information so the stretch goals are higher up the page.
Check out what else we have planned for the YRR of LRR!
Since this KickStarter is for online weekly sketches, podcasts, and streams we wanted to make it it a little more special...
While our weekly sketches will still go up on Monday, KickStarter backers will be able to see the weekly sketch early, on the Friday before it goes up. We will be hosting everything on our own YouTube channel (and still cross-posting to The Escapist), meaning the sketches will also be available in HD—on Friday for KickStarter backers and on Monday for everyone. As an added bonus, the YouTube ads will be disabled during those 3 KickStarter-exclusive days.
We have also prepared a variety of delightful rewards you will receive in addition to the still terribly named YRR of LRR!
We have now added three new limited tiers, for more fun and silliness!
Here are all the previous tiers:
A lot of backers who pledged for tiers that didn't include our exclusive physical rewards have asked us for add-ons so they can experience everything we're offering, so okay!
You can only add a la carte items if you are already at a reward tier of $125 or higher. We've set a $75 threshold for shipping and fulfillment of physical rewards, and below $125 the tiers already are combos of physical rewards (except the DVD, which is DVD-only by design).
AND NOW: You can just add the entire $150 and $250 tiers to any limited tier as whole add-ons. This is owing to many requests for people who funded the Tennis Pro, LoadingReadyRumbler, or Alchemist of Arland tiers, and others.
Many have asked: The DVD is not KickStarter exclusive and will be available to everyone, once it's finally done.
STEP 1 - If you are already a backer, hit the "Manage Your Pledge" button. If you are a new backer, hit the "Back This Project" button.
STEP 2 - Make sure you have selected the base tier you wish to pledge at.
STEP 3 - Check out the add-on items list below and how much you need to increase your pledge by. For example, if you got one of the Creepy Dolls but also want a shirt, please add $50 (plus shipping if you live outside the US).
STEP 4 - Hit "Continue to Next Step." Then confirm your new pledge!
IMPORTANT! Make a note to yourself of what you've added on! When the project has completed we will send out backer surveys asking for information. That survey will have a section where you tell us what you've added on, so we can check against your increased pledge and send it along!
EVEN MORE IMPORTANT! Depending on what you ordered, your rewards may ship separately. Do not be surprised if not everything arrives at once. Thanks!
Are you going to stop your other shows?
Nope! Unskippable, Feed Dump, CheckPoint, and Friday Nights won't be affected either way by this, it just means we won't actively seek out other work.
If this funds, what happens after 2014?
Great question! We're not sure yet. We've got a lot of ideas for things to do, but that's a "future us" concern.
Okay, well what if this doesn't fund?
Even better question! If this campaign "fails", we don't consider it "a failure". It simply means that the market can't support a year of our sketches, and (even though we really, really want this to happen) we're okay with that. It means the sketches will wrap up in January 2014, we'll regroup, and come back with another project we hope you'll like.
I really want that shirt/pin/poster. Can I buy it later in your store?
Unfortunately no. These items are Kickstarter-only rewards. Thanks for your interest!
How will the rewards ship?
Our rewards will be mailed out of the US. Please note that portions of your reward may be shipped separately and at different times, depending on the item’s dimensions and when it will be produced. Please note that the Season 11 DVD will ship in 2015.
Can I back at different levels? What if I want the poster AND I want to shoot a tennis ball at you?
UPDATED ANSWER: We initially thought you could, but it turns that each account can only back at one tier. We are investigating options for adding things like the t-shirt to other tiers, as some kind of add-on. Sorry about that!
I live in [A PLACE]. Can I still back you? Do you ship here?
Yes! But here's what's up: We live in Canada, but nearly all of our physical rewards ship out of the US. If you live in Canada, or internationally, please add an extra $10 to your pledge for shipping (if your tier involves a physical reward). It's all listed on each tier.
Risks and challenges
The big question of course is, "Can we do this?"
Yes. My goodness, yes. We've been doing it for a friggin' DECADE. If we can't do this, no one can.
If this project is funded, the final season of weekly LRR sketches, additional podcasts and streams will begin in January 2014, and last all year.
We have priced out all the rewards being produced through your kind support, and are working with an extremely reputable US-based company in order to handle production and fulfillment in a timely manner.
As many of you may be aware, when dealing with physical rewards, production delays can occur. In the case of any delays or setbacks, we will work with our backers through this Kickstarter and our website, www.loadingreadyrun.com to keep the lines of communication open.
We will provide regular updates to backers in order to keep everyone who contributed to this Kickstarter aware of how the project is progressing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
