Slate allows you to visualise the structure of a spreadsheet in a simple and intuitive way.
"A NEW WAY OF SEEING SPREADSHEETS"
We are building Slate because we have personally experienced the frustration of debugging and interpreting complex and poorly documented spreadsheets.
Excel is an incredibly powerful tool. It is great at creating complex models out of simple calculations. However, it is all too easy for models to become overly complicated and almost impossible to interpret.
Worse still, when you inherit someone else’s spreadsheet, problems can be amplified.
What is Slate?Slate allows you to visualise your spreadsheets in a quick and simple way.
With Slate, mistakes are much more obvious and resolving errors is as simple as following the trail of calculations back to the source. Slate is great for:
Slate is an add-in for Microsoft Excel. It stores all data locally on the machine. The initial launch will work with Microsoft Excel 2007, 2010 and 2013 for Windows.
"WHEN YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND A SPREADSHEET YOU CAN DO SO MUCH MORE"
Below shows the standard Excel view of a spreadsheet and the Slate tree view. The arrows represent the formulas linking the cells together and the red circles highlight cells containing numbers being used as inputs. Slate lets you clearly see where all the numbers are coming from.
We are incredibly excited about our campaign, and have some amazing rewards lined up:
We are currently developing the initial version of Slate. We will launch the private beta to a select group in May 2014.
With feedback from this, we will launch the first publicly available version of Slate in June 2014, which will normally only be available through a yearly subscription, priced at £200/$300 per user. By supporting us through Kickstarter, you will be making significant savings.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Like any software project, there will be inevitable technical challenges along the way and these could present barriers which could delay the release of both the private beta and public releases of Slate. Good thing we are not afraid of adversity.
We will be working as fast as possible to make Slate a reality, and hope that you can join us in this quest to change the way millions of people around the globe work.
Yes. The Kickstarter license is for life. If there are any minor bugs in this release we will offer free updates too.
Yes. Slate will work with any sheet. A simple sheet was used in the examples to make it easier to understand the concept. Obviously, the more complex the sheet, the more complex the tree view, but we have found it is always easier to understand than the conventional spreadsheet view.
No. The vast majority of Excel users are on Windows operating system so we have decided to focus our efforts on this segment.
Sure! Send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we would be delighted to confirm your pledge with a receipt or give any other details. Slate should be easy to justify based upon the expected time-savings! :)
