The world gives us many reasons to mourn. In my country, the USA, the daily news is filled with tales of needless death and destruction. My statement to The Gathering-RSVP (produced by Red Sandstone Varied Productions) will reflect the waves of sadness that fill the air I breathe.
I propose to create a choreography called We All Mourn, based on the work of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. The work, a combination of spoken word and movement takes its inspiration from a solo work I created and performed numerous times in the San Francisco, California area starting in 2007.The thematic base of the work created for The Gathering-RSVP will have specific references to the Irish experience.
We All Mourn begins with a single figure setting the motif. That figure will be joined by four additional performers, with the five representing the five stages of Kubler-Ross’s grief process. A sixth figure, representing Death, will enter the movement pattern. This character, a dancer, will not speak.
As the piece continues, additional performers will enter the space with spoken words and the motif movements. The ideal situation would include 100 or more people who know the movement pattern joining the performance.
The costuming concept involves specific and uniform clothing for the initial six performers and thematic costume elements for the 100 volunteers.
The local sponsors (Red Sandstone Varied Productions) in Ireland will provide lodging. The funding for other expenses has been met privately. The funding from this Kickstarter campaign will be used to transport the choreographer to Cork, Ireland to teach and set the choreography.
Risks and challenges
I will be on site with the participants for one week. The creation of the work will require a concentrated effort and time commitment from the dancers. If the contact people in Cork have not gathered and prepared the core group of dancers, the work will be highly challenging. However, I have created group choreographies in the past and I am prepared to take this challenge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
