About

Kobble is a card-drafting and dice-rolling game about establishing a criminal empire in a twisted fantasy city. Two gangs engage in a series of bloody battles for control over territory within a neighborhood. In the end, the gang that wins more fights gains undisputed control of that neighborhood, and the other gang is forced out of the neighborhood forever. Kobble can be played cooperatively or competitively with 1-6 players and takes about an hour to play.

Each gang in Kobble has a character card associated with it. There is a Goblin gang, a Wizard gang, a Yeti gang, a Vampire gang, an Infected gang, and many others, 50 in total. Because each game of Kobble tells the story of a war between two gangs, there are over 2000 possible matchups that can be played. For example, Goblins vs Wizards, Bards vs Gargoyles, Crystal Mages vs Minotaurs, and the list goes on.

Each player in Kobble takes on the role of a lieutenant within their respective gang. Each lieutenant has a specialty, represented by a second character card that is uniquely their own. So, in the Yeti gang, there might be a Yeti Slime, a Yeti Archer, or many others. But, the next time you play, you could play as an Angel Gang, with characters like an Angel Tormentor or an Angel Golem. Each lieutenant will have a unique combination of 2 character cards, and thus have a unique set of 6 abilities, making each character play noticeably differently than any other character in the game. We've been playing the game heavily for almost two years now, and we're still discovering new synergies between character cards, and thus new strategies for how to build a character.

At the start of a game, players can either divide up into two gangs and play competitively, or all players can play together as one gang, and the game itself can simulate an enemy gang. There is no deck building before you play a game of Kobble, and there is just one box to buy. Each gang is dealt a small selection of character cards at the beginning of the game, and they must draft their shared gang card and their individual specialty cards from among the cards that they are dealt.

Each gang then gets location cards, which represent that gang’s territory. Over the course of the game, gangs can attempt to invade enemy territories and take control of them. Once one gang wins enough fights, they gain control of the entire neighborhood, and thus win the game.

Each round consists of two phases. The first phase is the opportunity phase, in which players gain resources based on which territories they control, and then use those resources to purchase upgrades for their characters.

The second phase is the fight phase, in which one gang attempts to invade a territory of their enemy gang. Fighting in Kobble plays like an amped-up old-school JRPG. The basic rules are simple, but because your character and your opponent’s characters change drastically from one game to the next, the “perfect strategy” in a fight will change from one game to the next, making the fight mechanics very difficult to master. Attacks hit hard, HP values are low, and through working together with the other members of your gang, abilities can synergize together in explosive ways. By taking the right actions, even a strong opponent can often be defeated in a single round.

Risks and challenges

Kobble is the first card game developed by us here at Gorgon Head Games, and so there are inherent risks that come with our inexperience. We've heard horror stories of new game companies promising too much, not meeting their release schedules, or not budgeting their money properly. We are determined to follow through on everything we promise, and are going to do this by only promising that which we know we can accomplish.

Our pledge goal of $24,000 covers EVERYTHING. We know how much it is going to cost to make a full print run of the game. We know how much it is going to cost to ship the games from the manufacturers to our headquarters, and how much it is going to cost to ship those game to you. If we meet our fundraising goal, then from a monetary perspective, there will be nothing left standing between us and our goal of getting our game out to fine folks like you. We’re working with Panda Game Manufacturing. They’re the company that manufactured Pandemic and many other great games, and they have a well-deserved reputation for creating high quality games with a consistent, reliable turnaround time.

As far as the development of the game is concerned, the rules are finished, the design of every card is finished (except our 50th character slot, which is reserved for our "DESIGN A CHARACTER" backer reward), and over 70% of the game's artwork is completed. We've been playing and refining the game for two years now, and so we're very comfortable with releasing it in its current form.

There are no stretch goals currently listed for the game, and that is intentional. We are promising one great game, and that's it, because we're already almost done with it, and that's all that we are certain we can deliver on in a timely manner. We would love to do bonus exclusive cards and expansions for this game, (we know what our expansions will be when we get the chance to do them), but all of that will take additional time and cost additional money, and we don't promise anything to you that we don't fully understand the logistics of. Right now, we're a brand new company, taking our first step. We're taking it slowly, but we know we're ready.

CREATE A CHARACTER - There are 50 character cards in Kobble. 49 of them have been designed. If you pick this reward, you can work with the design team to create the game's final character card for our last empty slot. This card, like all character cards, will be able to be used as a gang card, or as a character's specialty card. (Your design is, of course, subject to our approval and revision.) Your name will appear on our website among the list of the citizens of Kobble, and your name will definitely appear in the rulebook, if you wish, bigger than all the other names, along with some sort of extra fancy title.
