About

Introduction

At Garywayne skis we believe in exploring the future of backcountry powder skiing through three-dimensional base technology. We hand craft our unique powder skis in Whistler B.C. to create an entirely new snow sliding experience. Our combination of rocker, reverse sidecut, and revolutionary convex base come together to form a ski that enables new powder skiing possibilities. We are the originators of curved base technology and still provide the best product and skiing experience.

What are Garywayne Skis?

Garywayne skis feature Omnidirectional Ski Technology: full rocker, full reverse sidecut, and a revolutionary convex base. The combination of these factors allows for smoother transitions between turns and a greater ability to drift while still being able to set an edge. Our technology results in a ski that is more torsionally stiff yet lighter than comparable sized skis. It also allows the skis to turn on a dime because there is a much smaller portion of the ski in contact with the snow compared to conventional shapes. The experience is like nothing else available on the market today. We currently offer three models. Please check out our website for more information:

Our flagship model is 180 cm long with a 180 mm waist. They provide superior flotation, while the narrow tip and tail keep the swing weight down. This severe reverse side cut gives the ski a streamlined shape, providing a smoother ride. The convex base (side to side rocker) lets you roll over from edge to edge on such a fat ski. It also keeps the leading edge off the snow and free from catching anything during a turn or drift.

Our slightly more conventional model measures 185 cm in length and has a 165 mm waist. It has the same convex base and rocker as the 180 mm waist model, which provides the same benefits. This is the best ski for someone that wants to experience our technology in a more conventional form.

Won’t someone think of the children! Our newest model is for the young at heart… and body. Originally designed for a friend's son, the Lil’ Waynes are 138 cm long with a 130 mm waist. To our knowledge, this is the only back-country ski designed for kids.

The Garywayne Story – Our History

Garywayne started one night in a pub in 2007, an idea from a life long skier shared with a friend in confidence. The following months involved much discussion on just how to pull off this idea and bring three dimensional base ski technology to the real world. In 2008 we got started. Prototype after prototype, season after season the Garywaynes got better and better. With the generous support of Powder Mountain Catskiing and Heliskiing Inc., a Whistler based backcountry skiing guide company, we were able to test the Garywaynes in the best possible environment for them.

Eventually people started asking where they could get a pair and the decision was made to offer them to the public. Production moved from Vancouver Island, to Squamish, and eventually to the conceptual birthplace of the skis, Whistler, B.C., Canada. We are currently entering into our fifth season of public sales (2014-2015 season).

Street Cred

Garywaynes are becoming well known within the backcountry ski community in and around Whistler, B.C., Canada. They are ridden daily by guests and guides of Powder Mountain Catskiing and Heliskiing Inc. and locals alike. Outside of B.C., our skis have been ridden in Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Montana, Alberta, South America, Italy, and even Japan. They have truly been around the world. Our skis have been featured in The Ski Journal, Teton Gravity Research, Epic Ski, Mountain Life Magazine (Pg. 26), The Pique News Magazine, The Calgary Herald, and even on Global News. Our Latest Development – Capped Construction

After prototyping, testing, more testing, and lots of fine tuning, we have finally perfected our manufacturing process for capped skis. With capped skis, the topsheet of the ski comes down around the perimeter of the ski to meet with the ski’s edge. This eliminates the exposed wood sidewall, increasing durability and long term performance of the skis.

Why we need your help

With our latest development (capped construction) and the momentum and support for our products we’ve seen over the last four years, we need to move towards more advanced manufacturing techniques and processes. With some specialized CNC machinery we can design new ski shapes on the computer, prepare the materials on the CNC machine, and have them on the snow the next day. This also helps us reduce the manual labor required to build the skis, increases our overall quality, and reduces our scrap/reworking rate all contributing to a better product for our customers at a lower cost. With this equipment we will be able to produce more skis faster, and produce a larger production run per season.

We’ve spec’d out the machinery we need, we’ve got a space cleared out in our shop for it, all we need are enough pre-orders to move forward with this. We feel very strongly in the ski technology we’ve developed and know that it will revolutionize people’s snow sliding experience. We need to get these skis out to as many people as possible to spread the joy.

Risks and challenges

Now entering into our seventh year of development of these skis, we’ve got a good handle on what goes right and what can go wrong. We have a good track record of fulfilling orders to customers over the past four years.

Being a small, start up company we initially faced hurdles with acquiring the supplies we needed, however, over the years we’ve developed relationships with our suppliers and face less issues. Regardless, unforeseen ordering issues can cause problems.

Naturally, there will be unknown challenges with ordering and commissioning the manufacturing equipment we are purchasing. The equipment supplier however, has a long history of providing these machines and has a good track record. Implementation and operation of the new equipment is a risk, although we’ve had experience with this type of equipment in the past and have the manufacturer as a resource for troubleshooting.

As with manufacturing any new product, abiding to the production timeline can be a challenge. We are aiming to have skis on our supporter’s feet for the 2014-2015 season, however, unforeseen issues may delay our timeline. Meeting our goal will give us some budget for help in the shop, which will help us get orders out.
