About

The Golden Triangle, the heart of Pittsburgh's business district situated at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers, is distinguished by office buildings of a variety of architectural styles. Built up over the last century in several distinct periods of development, Pittsburgh's buildings are impressive designs with striking features. Extending your view to include the Oakland area of town adds the beauty of the Cathedral of Learning on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh to add yet another unique, storied and beautiful structure to the character of the Pittsburgh skyline.

20 years ago I had this idea that the buildings of the city of Pittsburgh would make a great chess set. It was inspired by the PPG building which is sometimes referred to as the PPG Castle and makes a great rook on a chess board.

Over the 20 years I refined the idea while looking for someone to help me make it a reality, since I have no artistic ability. I was unsuccessful finding a designer/artist who could turn my vision into an actual product until last January.

The chess set I've developed is usable as a playing set but also makes a wonderful display piece in your home. The pieces are large. The tallest piece, the king, is 4.25 inches tall. The shortest piece, the pawn, is 3 inches tall.

What buildings make up the set?

  • King - US Steel building
  • Queen - Mellon Center
  • Bishop - Oxford Center
  • Bishop - Cathedral of Learning
  • Knight - Fifth Avenue Place
  • Rook - PPG Place
  • Pawn - Gulf building

The pieces are made out of polystone. Polystone is a resin infused with bits of stone that create a hefty, substantial, weighted figurine with a porcelain-like feel. Polystone allows for great detail on the buildings so they closely resemble the actual buildings.

At present, I'm only creating the pieces. However, I've found a great black & gold leather chess board from Italy. I'm using one myself for the sample set and will likely be offering the same board on my website to customers of Steel City Chess.

We've created a sample of the set. You can see that in the picture here on Kickstarter. Now we need funding to finalize the design and begin to manufacture the sets.

Risks and challenges

I believe there are minimal risks to the project at this point. The primary risk is a redesign of the packaging. The packaging for the set that we created initially was not strong enough to withstand the weight of the polystone pieces. It showed signs of distress after making the journey from the manufacturer. We have a redesign that we think will work much better but we still have to test it. Several more redesigns could delay the overall production.

Additional risk includes the logistics of shipping the finished product from the manufacturer in China. I tried to find a US manufacturer but did not identify any companies that could produce the sets. The shipping from China will be by boat and that adds to the time it takes to receive the final products.
