We’re glad you asked! Seriously, if you didn't ask, we wouldn't have been able to tell you, and that would have just made us sad. Skelattack is a hand-animated 2D action adventure game chock full of quirky characters, intense challenges, and interactive environments. Fans of Hollow Knight, Cuphead, and Rogue Legacy will find themselves comparing our humble dungeon home to aspects of these well-known titles.
Flipping the typical dungeon-crawler on its head is the name of the game here. Rather than playing as the human hero, whose timeless quest is to “loot the dungeon and kill all the baddies”, in Skelattack you will play as Skully, an enchanted skeleton whose sole task is to keep his dungeon safe from the invading humans!
Skully isn’t your run-of-the mill, run-down-and-kill dungeon NPC; this is an undead skeleton on a mission! Along with his trusty (and ridiculously adorable) bat companion Imber, Skully will clear all of the areas in his dungeon of those pesky humans. Along the way, he’ll be introduced to other fun and memorable dungeon denizens, fight magical creatures who are indiscriminate about who they destroy, solve increasingly difficult puzzles, and take out the intimidating human bosses at the end of each area! He will do all of this compelled by a single question, “Why are they here?”
Through hidden lore and character interaction, Skully and Imber will uncover the truth behind why their dungeon is being disturbed...and they may even learn how they came to be the guardians of their subterranean home.
If you enjoy rich settings rife with risks and reward, heartfelt and goofy characters, puzzles to overcome and bosses to outwit, you will absolutely love Skelattack! Oh, did we mention wall-sliding? Yeah, we’re looking at you, Super Meat Boy fans: we hope you brought a sturdy pair of gloves and acrobatic skills. We jump/spelunk quite a bit ‘round these parts.
Perhaps the most intriguing and versatile character in Skelattack is its dungeon. It is at once your home, and an ever-present obstacle to overcome. It can be your most friendly and helpful friend, or your absolute worst enemy. It can hold treasure, or it could be barely containing danger. The paths it offers could lead you to greatness, or throw you headfirst into peril. Here, in the dungeon, lies the entirety of Skully and Imber’s harrowing journey.
Skully’s Living Quarters - You’ll begin your adventure in Skully’s crib! Crypt? However you prefer to look at it, this is where Skully spends his time when there are no alarm bells a-ringing. We’d say it’s a room fit for an undead king, or at the very least one of his close friends!
The Sewers - Man-made and not originally intended to be populated, fortifying and settling within the sewer became a necessity after humans began finding entries into the dungeon proper while working and expanding their waste systems. Since then, it has become another slice of home to the dungeon crew.
The Greenery - Thanks to a few creatures with magical green thumbs and an instinctual understanding of agriculture, dungeon-kin were able to create their own subterranean version of the lush, green forests that could only otherwise be found topside in the human world. The Greenery serves as an area of peace and plentifulness for dungeon citizens, as protected against invasion as it may be.
The Prison - Though built to house humans whose paths strayed too far from home, the Prison is very sparsely guarded. After all, who needs guards in a place that was constructed so as to be almost completely impassable, even by its own caretakers? Obstacles abound in this dungeon-within-a-dungeon, and folks would be wise to give this area a wide berth.
The Grand Halls - Even to the magically undead and supernatural, pride in one’s achievements are best displayed where the masses can find them. The Grand Halls are very close to the world’s surface, serving as a traversable history of the dungeon over its centuries of existence for all to see. As such, this area of the dungeon is particularly perilous, as it also leads to the rest of the treasure-rich dungeon.
The Hub - The Hub is a centralized point within the dungeon that leads to all other accessible areas. It offers a place where all of the dungeon’s heroes can convene, rest, resupply, and strike back out to defend their home. It’s also home to the Blacksmith, whose weapon upgrades makes the task of clearing out invaders much more terribly efficient.
The Goblin’s Goblet - How better to rest one’s weary bones than to spend some time in the company of good friends, with a tankard of ale close at hand? The Goblin’s Goblet is a tavern just off the dungeon Hub where dungeon citizens can relax, catch some wonderful live music, and catch up on the gossip of the day. One can even catch a valuable piece of advice for their adventures ahead.
Leave all of that flesh at the door, it will only weigh you down! Skully is the hero of this tale, and he has been tasked, with your help, to clear his dungeon home of sinister monsters and human invaders!
Skully’s bestest friend and brave companion, Imber is there to help Skully on his journey. Chock-full of helpful tips, able to wield magic on behalf of Skully, and a good friend when he needs one the most, Imber is by your side from beginning to end...and she’s so cute to boot!
Tall, tough, and totally terrific at transforming...swords into better swords! The alliteration fell apart, but after the Blacksmith upgrades your weapons, they certainly will not!
All we can say about Rock Bro is that he’s a total bro made out of rock! Need we say more? Fine, he’s a stone golem, enchanted to help protect the dungeon. See how boring that was? Just kidding, magic isn’t boring, and neither is this guy!
Hunky Goblin runs the prison. He’s just...so good at it. I’m...I’m suddenly having t-trouble forming thoughts…*blushes*
Green Thumb Gary is the beast responsible for creating and tending to the Greenery! Always focused on his work, and never one to get excitable, he’ll bring you some peace on your quest.
Hurt-Bringer packs a heck of a punch, and he urgently wants to unpack it on your face and body. Don’t let him. We have it on good authority that it stings.
These slick-haired gents bring a whole new urgency to “burning down the house” with their precision fire-throwing abilities! You’ll want to clear of Char-Chuckers before they try to serve you up as barbecue!
We know it may get us in trouble on Reddit (we’re looking at you, /r/fellowkids), but it simply can’t be ignored...these Flame Spirits are actually lit af. Slice them and destroy their summoning stone before they spit-roast you into oblivion!
Look, we’re sure a few of them aren’t that bad. But what are we supposed to do? Let them have the run of the dungeon? These dudes are jerks. Clear ‘em out!
We wanted Skelattack to have the look of a 90s-era cartoon. Anyone remember the animated Beetlejuice series? Perhaps Darkwing Duck? Duck Tales? Count Duckula? What was with all the ducks in cartoons…? Anyway, these classic shows heavily inspired the style behind Skelattack, along with the aesthetics of Tim Burton’s work.
For us, there’s something incredibly special about seeing a creator’s hand in their work. It can be charming and inviting, which is exactly the feeling we want to pass on to newer gamers and old-school nerds alike! Basically, Skelattack is its own unique tale, while also being a love letter to those aspects of childhood that shaped the way we think and create. So I suppose we should wish you happy travels through our minds!
Remember that part about Tim Burton inspiring us we mentioned above? Well we’re not the only ones who followed that thought process! Our composer, Jamal Green, wanted to create a soundscape to go with the spooky, fun, and weird visual aesthetics we created. Boy, oh boy, did he nail it!
Jamal channeled his inner Danny Elfman for Skelattack’s soundtrack, and we truly think the game would feel less complete without it! As we type this, we find ourselves humming the Sewer theme. We’re sure you’ll find yourselves doing the same!
Ukuza is a young indie game developer and publisher focused on bringing premium indie games to the mass market. We are a team of creatives, developers, and marketers started by Shane de Lumeau and Doug Borghese, who have done work for Microsoft, Amazon, Unity, Tom's Hardware and many other large brands. David Stanley, our Studio Technical Director, gave brain-birth to Skelattack and made this crazy adventure possible in the first place. Our team applies our skills to the best indie games in order to bring them high launch visibility.
In other words, we dream of great games, we help push and promote great games, and our only wish is to bring great games to you, our audience, until such a time that gaming is obsolete and replaced with something even cooler! Though what that could be, we have no idea. Video games are the best.
Our dungeons are well-stocked with life, challenge, and story as we speak. Our playtesters already get to enjoy that feel-good vibe when they run through our hallowed dungeon halls, and we know that we have a very good experience to offer folks the world over.
But we want more, and you deserve not just a good game, but a great one.
We already have plans for NEW dungeon areas, NEW enemies, NEW NPCs, NEW obstacles and puzzles, NEW magic, NEW weapons...a whole lot of new! This has come from very humble roots, with the simple goal of creating a fun little game for a few people to enjoy. With more minds and hands involved in its creation, in a little over two years it has become much more worthy of being on computers and consoles everywhere. But we want to give this game even more, as we can't let go of the feeling that the dungeon has a bigger tale to tell. So thanks to backers like you, we are planning to make this even bigger and bonier than it is now! With your help, Skelattack will expand into a timeless and memorable gaming experience for you and your fellow adventurers to enjoy again and again!
Creating a video game takes up literally all of your time. Time that most people devote to working a regular day-job, where they get enough scratch in their wallet to pay for their day-to-day needs and expenses. Therein lies the problem with developing a game like Skelattack: the work BECOMES your daily life, whether you mean for it or not, and you’re left with a depressing bank balance and no time to do anything else.
And that leads us to why we are here. Kickstarter offers the unique ability to connect directly with an audience that would love to get its hands on a game like Skelattack, and you have the unique ability to communicate with us through a medium like Kickstarter to get the exact game you want from us! Skelattack is our entire life, our only focus, and our greatest passion. But like it or not, we need money to make all of this a reality. Risks and challenges
Making a video game is always difficult and there are always unforeseen variables. With such a solid team in business, design, marketing, and development, we will do our best to overcome any challenges that come our way.
