About

imp (noun): a small, mischievous devil or sprite.

minion (noun): a follower or underling of a powerful person, especially a servile or unimportant one.

Imps & Minions is an anthology of high quality stories that explore the lives of the little guys in villainy.

These tales will show what minions are up to when they aren't charging headfirst towards the legendary paladin or taking that ill-fated shot at the unstoppable super agent. Whether they're summoned from a pit of despair in a blaze of hellfire or assembled in a high tech factory, Imps & Minions is a tribute to those who give all they have for those they serve.

We've heard enough of the heroic warrior, and the powerful sorcerer, and the menacing evil lord. We want stories about the underdogs and henchmen. The young demon, whose wings aren't quite big enough to fly. The guard in the emperor’s fortress, who aspires to something greater than patrolling the wall. The cannon-fodder goblin who only wants to return to the warren, but is hacked down by the honorable knight. Galactic Trooper #98183095, who has hopes and dreams and aspirations of his own, and a side-business selling homemade scarves.

Imps & Minions is all about telling their stories.

note for authors: see the bottom of this page for submission information.

Our Goal

Our immediate goal is to produce an anthology of high-quality fantasy and science fiction stories showcasing unsung minor villains.

Our long-term and continuing goal is to produce a series of high-quality, themed science fiction and fantasy anthologies, and to create paid opportunities for speculative fiction writers, with regular calls for submissions.

Imps & Minions will be published in paperback and eBook format by tdotSpec Inc., an independent publishing company based in Toronto, Ontario. It will be produced by tdotSpec Inc., in coordination with the Toronto Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers group.

Risks and challenges

We have a large team of enthusiastic volunteers. I am counting on them to maintain this enthusiasm as they power through the slush-pile and push stories through our three-stage selection process. This is the main challenge of this project. Fortunately, I have a ton of confidence in our team.

The main production stages are: open call for stories, reviewing submissions and deciding what gets in, structural edits, copy edits, formatting and design, and final proofing. Because these stages involve communicating with all of the creators and organizing meetings with the editors, it can lead to delays. Outsourcing design can also lead to delays. That's why, for this project, we are doing all of our design in-house - to give us better control of the end-product and the timeline. Our anticipated release date of August 2019 gives us a two-month buffer in case there are delays in production.

We are expecting a mountain of submissions from SFF writers. The quality of the end-product will depend on the number and quality of submissions we are able to attract. Hopefully, writers from far and wide will send us many submissions, allowing us to put together a great collection by picking out the gems. Ultimately, the overall success of the project depends on the writers and the quality of stories we receive. This is the main risk. We need to ensure that the project is promoted widely enough to attract the right talent and the right stories.
