About this project
"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. "--Harriet Tubman
I could be wrong, though it seems like; I walk the streets of Chicago among people who no-longer believe in being active. I know for sure that for black women, hair is a crown that expresses stature. At the start of production for The Harriet Experiment, one of our cinematographers said, "Seems like, the higher a woman climbs the success ladder, the weaker her curl pattern gets". I won't sit still while such a rich, vibrant culture is vacuumed lifeless by multi-media images of botox-ed clones, and lace front celebrities. Television programs, magazine covers, blog posts, all remix standardized beauty until we forget how beautifully we were designed in the first place. The majority of women in this country have felt the desire to be accepted, and exhalted and have risked their health to do so. I created The Harriet Experiment/inspired by Harriet Tubman, to help more women/girls to find freedom in their congenital features. I am on a quest to assist 700 people in breaking free from the restraints of main-stream beauty standards. Relentlessly seeking 700 people to go on record, and pledge to build a healthy relationship with their "whole-self", starting with hair or as we say in my culture "crown and glory". It's our time to heal. African people in America have struggled with self-worth, self-image, and self-construction since 1619, when the first English colony in North America took into possession 20 Africans. Stunned by the residue, I've created this initiative to restore balance to African Culture; I am faithful that it will.
By backing this project you are investing in a film that will peel the covers back on issues that are constantly being blanketed. How we groom ourselves, how we give and receive love, how we chose to nurture our bodies must all be re-evaluated. You are not investing in "Good Hair Part 2". This body of work is a calculated pursuit towards freedom from unhealthy food choices, relationships, stinking thinking, and poor self-imagery. I see this Kickstarter campaign as phase one of our project. There were many people who helped along "The Underground Railroad", all race backgrounds, all ages. This documentary is an effort to re-impose balance and structure. Please make your pledge, we appreciate it greatly.
